초록

This article examines the work of Russian symbolist painter V.E. Borisov-Musatov, who pioneered the movement at the turn of the 20th century. Greatly influenced by French symbolist P. Puvis de Chavannes, he aimed to comprehend the mysterious soul of objects and phenomena and express it in an elusive, ghostly form, shying away from the mundane and crass. To Borisov-Musatov art served as a hint and a sign, connecting the world of things and the world of ideas.
Borisov-Musatov's artistic persona is that of a lonely, introverted dreamer and poet. In response to his severe spinal injury and mental suffering, the artist immersed himself in bygone eras, a haven of beauty from which he wished to glean a deeper meaning of life. This stood in contrast to the soulless and calculated vanity of modernity. In an effort to convey the elusive and inexpressible, he created his own "beautiful world", where mysterious and fantastic blue-clad "beautiful ladies" stroll the grounds.
Borisov-Musatov turned the ancient noble manor of Zubrilovka into his charming Eden. Ghostly female figures walk the green-blue Zubrilovka park, an embodiment of the desire for beauty and eternal harmony. In this intimate, mysterious garden, the symbolist artist dreams of deity, where unearthly silence and peace prevail.
