<스타워즈> 오리지널 트릴로지의 빌런 활용 전략 연구: 시리즈 서사는 어떻게 연장되는가? (How is series narration extended?: Study by utilizing villains in the Classic Trilogy)

초록

이 연구는 <스타워즈> 오리지널 트릴로지의 캐릭터 운용 전략을 분석하여 성공적인 시리즈화에 영향을 끼친 결정적 동인을 파악한다. 오리지널 트릴로지는 게임 체인 저로서 빌런에 대한 서사 정보를 효과적으로 통제하면서 ‘실현된 서사 세계’ 내에 긴장성을 부여한다. 특히 ‘출생의 비밀’과 관련된 트리거 포인트를 시의적절하게 활용해 적극적인 해석 주체를 통해 재구성되는 ‘가능한 스토리 세계’를 점진적으로 중층화한다. 더 구체적으로 보면, 오리지널 트릴로지는 빌런의 성격화, 탈성격화, 재성격화 과정을 중심으로 주동인물군의 대타적 관계망을 끊임없이 재편한다. 먼저 <에피소드 4>는 다스 베이더를 위압적인 절대악으로 위치시키는 전략을 구사한다. 이는 레드헤링 효과를 견인하기 위한 사전 포석에 해당한다. <에피소드 5>는 다스 베이더의 과거사에 대한 미묘한 정보들을 베풀면서 가면을 쓴 빌런의 은폐된 사연으로 관심을 유도한다. <에피소드 6>는 빌런의 다면적 성격을 확인시킨 후, 다스 베이더를 향한 수용자의 이중구속적 입장을 복합적으로 자극하는 기획을 선보인다. 특히 수용자는 다스 베이더의 절반만 밝혀진 과거사, 절반만 밝혀진 관계망에 관한 해석 가능성에 의존해 기대와 예측의 담론장을 형성하게 된다. 이로써 오리지널 트릴로지는 ‘실현된 서사 세계’와 ‘가능한 스토리 세계’ 사이의 영역, 곧 ‘상상적 대화 공간’의 비약적인 확장을 이끄는 티핑 포인트를 만들어낸다.
본 논문을 시작으로 시리즈화에 성공한 스토리콘텐츠로부터 잠재적 수용자를 유인하는 최초의 입구를 찾아내 그 전략을 밝혀가도록 하겠다.

영어초록

This study is an attempt to elucidate that production of a successful series of <Star Wars> was possible through the strategy for the operation of characters from the Classic Trilogy. The Classic Trilogy infuses tenseness within the ‘textual narrative world’ by effectively controlling the narrative information on the villain as the game changer. In particular, it progressively builds up layers of the ‘possible story universe’ being recomposed through the assertive interpretation principal by utilizing trigger points associated with the ‘secrets of birth’ in a timely manner. More specifically, the Classic Trilogy ceaselessly reshuffles the exclusive relationship network of the leading characters with the focus on characterization, de-characterization and re-characterization of the villains. First, <Episode 4> employs the strategy of positioning Darth Vader as an absolute coercive evil. This corresponds to the groundwork to induce the red herring effect. <Episode 5> induces the interests of the audience with a hidden story of a masked villain by releasing subtle information on the past history of Darth Vader. <Episode 6>, after having confirmed the multifaceted personalities of the villain, displays the design that complexly stimulates the doubly binding stances of the audience towards Darth Vader. In particular, the audience establishes the venue for anticipatory and predictive discourse by relying on the interpretive possibilities regarding the past history and relation network of Darth Vader that are only half revealed. Accordingly, the Classic Trilogy managed to generate a tipping point that is able to lead the rapid expansion of the domain between the ‘textual narrative world’ and the ‘possible story universe’, that is, the ‘imaginative communication space’.
Beginning with this paper, I will strive to find the initial entrance that entices the potential audience with the story contents that have succeeded in the production of the series in order to disclose the strategies underlying such success.
