한국 사극의 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링 가능성 연구: 드라마 <옷소매 붉은 끝동>을 중심으로 (A Study on the Possibility of Transmedia Storytelling in Korean Historical History: Focusing on the Drama )

초록

이 연구의 목적은 한국 사극(K-사극)을 활용한 트랜스미디어 콘텐츠 발전가능성의 구체성과 실효성을 예측하는 것이다. “킹덤” 방송 이후 전 세계에서“K-사극”이 해외 팬들이 관심을 가지면서 세계 콘텐츠 시장에서 하나의 장르로 자리 잡고 있다. 이런 상황에서 한국 콘텐츠의 경쟁력 향상을 위한 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 가능성을 분석할 필요가 있다. 최근 높은 시청률로 종영한 MBC에서 방영한 K-사극 <옷소매 붉은 끝동>은 아직 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링으로 보기는 어렵다. 그러나 <옷소매 붉은 끝동>은 여러 플랫폼으로확장이라는 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 기본은 넘어선 상태다.
이 연구의 내용은 <옷소매 붉은 끝동>이 다매체, 단일하고 통합된 스토리, 미디어 간 반복 회피라는 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 특징이 있음을 확인한것이다. <옷소매 붉은 끝동>은 원작 소설, 드라마, 웹소설, 웹툰은 물론 음악, 유튜브, 스핀오프까지 확장하면서 다매체로 확장했다. “조선왕조 정조시대” 라는 세계관에서 주인공인 정조와 덕임을 중심으로 주변 인물인 궁녀와 신하들과의 관계를 바탕으로 사랑과 삶에 조명했다. 이는 모든 매체에서 단일하고통합 이야기라 볼 수 있다. 이 드라마에서는 미디어 간 반복 회피를 위해캐릭터들의 “확장”을, 웹소설에서는 외전이라는 이야기의 “연장”을, 그리고유튜브에서는 사용자들의 수정이라는 “전환” 모습을 보였다.
이 연구의 결과는 <옷소매 붉은 끝동>에서 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 가능성이 충분하다는 점이다. 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링은 견고하게 만들어진 세계관에 충분한 배경 이야기와 갈등을 가진 캐릭터가 다양한 매체를 통해 이야기한다. 어떤 의미에서 역사 사실을 원천서사로 삼은 영화나 드라마 또는소설은 그 자체로 “트랜스미디어 스토리텔링”으로 볼 수 있다. 이는 역사 기록이라는 매개에서 영화, 드라마, 소설, 게임이라는 매체로 그 내용이 전환했기때문이다. 영미권에서는 <옷소매 붉은 끝동>과 같이 역사를 원천서사로 삼은콘텐츠를 영화, 드라마, 소설, 게임으로 제작한 경우가 많다. 정조 시대를다룬 콘텐츠가 다양한 매체에서 여럿 다룬 점을 봤을 때, 더 많은 트랜스미디어스토리텔링의 사례를 기대해 본다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to predict the specificity and effectiveness of the possibility of developing transmedia content using Korean historical dramas (K-historical dramas). Since the broadcast of "Kingdom," "K-historical drama" has become a genre in the global content market as overseas fans are interested.
In this situation, it is necessary to analyze the possibility of transmedia storytelling to improve the competitiveness of Korean content. MBC's "The Red Sleeve" which recently ended with high ratings, is still difficult to see as a transmedia storytelling. However, <The Red Sleeve> has exceeded the basics of transmedia storytelling, which is to expand to various platforms.
The content of this study confirmed that transmedia storytelling in <The Red Sleeve> has the characteristics of multiple media, single unified story or experience, and avoidance of redundancy between media. <The Red Sleeve> expanded to multiple media by expanding to original novels, dramas, web novels, webtoons, as well as music, YouTube, and spin-offs. In the universe of the "Joseon Dynasty's King Jeongjo Era," the relationship between the court ladies and their subjects, focusing on the main characters Jeongjo and Deokim, was illuminated in love and life. This is a single unified story or experience in all media. In order to avoide of redundancy between media, the drama showed the "expansion" of characters, the "extension" of the story of extramarital affairs in web novels, and the "transition" of users' modifications on YouTube.
The result of this study is that "The Red Sleeve" is a transmedia storytelling that is highly likely. Transmedia storytelling is about characters with sufficient backstories and conflicts in a well-developed world talking through various media. In a sense, a movie, drama, or novel that uses historical facts as a source narrative can be seen as "transmedia storytelling" in itself. This is because the content has shifted from the medium of historical records to the medium of movies, dramas, novels, and games. In the Anglo-American region, content based on history, such as <The Red Sleeve>, is often produced as movies, dramas, novels, and games. Given that the contents of the King Jeongjo era have been covered in various media, we look forward to more examples of transmedia storytelling.
