서구 안의 북대서양 잔여: 포스트식민주의와 서구 모더니즘 사이의 세계문학 덴마크-페로 문학을 중심으로 (A North Atlantic Rest in the West World literature between Postcolonialism and Western Modernism with special Reference to Dano-Faroese Literature)

초록

객관적으로 말해서 페로(Faroe Isalnds) 문화는 주권국가가 되고자하는 노력이 성공적이지 못했던 것과 관련하여 여전히 포스트식민주의적 위치에 있거나 일종의 회귀적 위치에 놓여 있다. 언어적, 정치적, 영토적 그리고 문학-예술적 자율성을 위한 투쟁이 백년 넘게 페로문화의 거대서사가 되어 왔다. 따라서 페로문학은 한편으로는 자율성을 향한 다중적인 행로와, 다른 한편으로 주권성의 결여 사이의 불일치로 인해 분열되어 있다. 이러한 의미에서 페로문학은 일반적으로 제국적 경험에 대한 ‘되받아쓰기’로서 설명될 수 있다고 할 수 있다. 나는 지난 수년간 페로 문학을 연구하면서 덴마크와 제국적 경험에 대한 ‘대답’을 넘어서는 관점을 사유해 왔으며, 이 관점을 세계문학(world literature)개념에 의해 틀 지워질 수 있는 장소(place)에 대한 풍부한 경험으로 확장시키고자 했다. 페로문학에서 장소의 역할을 설명하기 위해서는, 세계문학과 포스트식민주의 사이의 균열과 겹쳐짐이 페로문학 하위 범주인 덴마크-페로문학의 혼종성과 특별한 관련을 가지며, 이러한 혼종성은 고전적인 포스트식민주의의 프레임으로는 완전히 설명될 수 없다는 사실을 이해해야 한다.
덴마크-페로문학의 지리근대적 글쓰기가 지닌 생산적 주변성은 마침내 형식적 근대성에 대한 하나의 되받아쓰기가 된다. 특히 하이네센과 야콥센은 이종적인 미학들 간의 제휴, 지리근대성의 포괄성을 작품에 담음으로써 인류학적 연구에서나 가능할 표현의 혼종적 양태를 자신들만의 고유한 지리학으로 그려낸다. 유희하고, 지식을 추구하며 성숙과 형성과정을 묘사하면서 또한 문화적 서사를 강조하고 보편과 특수를 관계 짓는다. 지리학적 근대성의 다양한 담론들은 낡은 근대성의 주변에 공존하면서 작동한다. 그런가 하면 지리학적 근대성의 상황적이고 공간적인 시학은 서구의 문화적 전통과 세계의 나머지 사이의 소통에 더욱 열려 있으며 바깥 세계를 향해 나아가고자 한다.

영어초록

Objectively Faroese culture is still in a postcolonial position or perhaps in a kind of relapsing position connected with the unsuccessfull struggle to become a sovereign nation-state. The struggle for linguistic, political, territorial, and literary-artistic autonomy has been the master narrative of Faroese culture for over a hundred years. Faroese culture is thus divided between the discrepancy of, on the one hand, the multi-track process of autonomy and, on the other hand, lack of sovereignty. Faroese literature in general is thus rightfully described as a ‘writing back’ to the imperial experience.
My own research into Faroese literature over the past years has considered perspectives that extend beyond ‘the answer’ to Denmark and the imperial experience, reaching into a broad experience of place that can be framed by world literature concepts. In order to explain the role of place in Faroese literature, fractures and overlaps between world literature and postcolonialism are of particular relevance, especially to the Danish-Faroese subcategory of Faroese literature, the hybridity of which cannot be fully explained within a classic postcolonial framework.
The geography lesson has continued in the whole of Faroese literature, which can be seen as a continual attempt to localise The Faroe Islands in the new world of modernity and modernism. No doubt, the strong sense of place in Faroese literature represents a deprived culture without any established literary and cultural publicity. The literary and cultural struggle for autonomy – the discord concerning political status relative to Denmark – contributes to the strong placial consciousness in Faroese literature. Postcolonialism is well-suited for describing this. However my focus on placemaking and locality building in (Danish-) Faroese literature reaches beyond narrow nationbuilding and the notion of the writing back from the empire. Eager to embrace Western influence Danish-Faroese literature in particular transcends the imperial experience and writes back as a rest in the West, i.e. as a non-metropolitan culture with European origins, which negotiates the massive influence from the Continent’s urbanised civilisation. Re-routings within postcolonialism has placed a still greater focus on the relationship between literature’s empire and empire’s literature making it difficult to sharply distinguish between postcolonialism and world literature. The conception of place in Faroese literature in general is thus far from being legitimised on the basis of conceptions of de-colonised liberation. Place’s meaningfulness in Faroese literature expands out into a geographical context, which cannot be fully explained by classic postcolonial dichotomies. By the same token, my approach to the works of Heinesen and Jacobsen to some extent is in line with critical postcolonial discourse concerning the blind reproduction of Western culture in terms of a progressive developmental logic.
The productive marginality of Danish-Faroese geomodernistic worldwriting finally has been depicted as a writing back to formal modernism. Heinesen's and Jacobsen's heterogenic aesthetic affiliations in particular and the inclusiveness of geomodernism in general frames a heterogeneous mode of expression capable of anthropology-like self-studies into one’s own geography, entertaining, promoting knowledge, describing ripening and processes of formation, highlighting cultural narratives, connecting the particular and the universal etc. The co-existence of a variety of discourses in geographical modernism operates in the margin of the old modernism while its contextual and spacious poetics is more open to the dialogue between the Western cultural tradition and the rest of the world and in general tuned in for venturing into the outside world.
