초록

『한티재 하늘』은 19세기 말에서 20세기 전반에 이르는 한국 근대사의 주요장면을 재현하면서 역사적 맥락을 만들어낸다. 이 소설에서 재현되는 것은 주류 역사에 전면화된 인물들의 역사가 아니라 그 뒤편에 묻힌 이름 없는 민중들의 역사이며, 나아가 그러한 역사적 사건에 참여하지 못하고 자신의 삶터에 남은 자들의 역사다. 이들의 역사는 하나의 단일한 개념이나 실체로 정리되지 않는다. 예컨대, 의병은 위정척사와 반봉건, 그리고 그것과도 균열을 일으키는 보다 다층적인 욕망들이 뒤섞인 이질적이고 혼종적인 집단이다. 아울러 3.1운동에 참여한 민중들도 그러하다. 민족적 분노와 독립의 열망을 지닌 주체들의 집단적인 민족운동이라기보다는 다양한 참여기제와 동력들이 공존하는 사건이었음을 『한티재 하늘』은 여러 인물들을 통해 재현하고 있다.
무엇보다도 이 소설은 ‘빤란구이’들과 ‘만세꾼’들에게 초점을 맞추지 않고, 남아서 자신이 살아가는 지역을 지키는 자들의 역사를 다룬다. 식민지 수탈제도로서 지주제와 소작제의 문제점을 재현하고 있는데, 이 과정에서 쟁의하는 주체로서 ‘민중’의 면모와 함께, 봉건제도와 식민지배체제에 포섭되어 순응하는 민중의 양상을 보다 구체화함으로써 “스스로 모순을 내포하고 있는 다성적 주체”로서 민중의 다양성을 제시하고 있다.
『한티재 하늘』의 등장인물들은 삼밭골 등 경북 북부지역이라는 일정한 지리적 영역 안에서 지역공동체를 이루며 살아간다. 특히 역사적 변혁기를 거치면서 혹독한 수난을 당하는 소설 속 인물들은 지역공동체가 지닌 힘을 통해 자신의 역경을 견뎌낸다. 지역을 살아가는 민중들의 삶이 전개되고 사건이 일어난 장소에 대한 ‘대항기억’으로 역사는 구성되는데, 『한티재 하늘』은 대안적 역사쓰기의 한 양상을 소설이란 형식으로 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

『Hantijae Haneul』 makes a historical context with reviving the key moments of Korean modern history ranging from the early 19th century to the late 20th century. What is reproduced in this novel is not the history of characters that were accumulated in the mainstream history, but is the history of nameless people who were under its back side, and furthermore, is the history of the people who remained in their living spaces with failing to participate in such historical event. The history of these people is not arranged with one single concept or substance. For exampled, the righteous army corresponds to a heterogeneous and hybrid group of being mixed more multi-layered desires, which lead to Wijeong Cheoksa(衛正斥邪, defending orthodoxy and rejecting heterodoxy), to semi-feudalism, and even to a crack against it. So the March First Movement does as well. 『Hantijae Haneul』 is reviving through many characters what it was an event of being coexisted diverse participatory mechanisms and momentums, rather than being the collective nationalistic movement in the entities that have a national anger and a desire for independence.
Above all things, this novel addresses the history of those who keep the region where they are left to make a living, without focusing on ‘Ppanrangui[rebel force]’(s) and ‘Manseggun(creating hurrah).’ As the colonial exploitation system, a problem of a landlord system and a tenant farming system is being reconstructed. Diversity of the public as "the multi-natured entity of involving contradiction itself" is being suggested by further specifying the aspect of the people, who are adapted with being embraced by the feudal system and the colonial regime, along with the appearance of 'people' as the main agent who disputes in this process.
The characters in 『Hantijae Haneul』 proceed with living forming community inside the certain geographical sphere called the northern Gyeongbuk region such as Sambatgol, etc. Especially, the novel characters, who suffer a severe ordeal with passing through the age of innovation in history, endure their own adversity through the strength that the community has. History is composed of ‘counter-memory’ to a place where the event took place while the life of people dwelling in the community is developed. 『Hantijae Haneul』 is showing one aspect of writing alternative history with a form dubbed a novel.
