북만주지역의 獨立運動歌謠 －1910년대 민족주의 독립운동가요를 중심으로－ (The Korean Independence Movement Songs from the 1910s in North Manchuria)

초록

독립운동가요는 독립운동과정에서 민족정신과 항일의식을 고취하기 위해 독립운동과정에서 만들어진 노래를 말하며 우리민족의 소중한 역사기록이기도 하다. 독립운동가요는 민족의식을 고취하기 위한 수단으로서 조국에 대한 사랑, 그리움, 이별에 대한 노래와 전쟁에 대한 사기를 북돋아 주는 민족투쟁의 정신적 도구이기도 했다. 그리하여 독립운동가요는 우리 민족수난의 시기에 수많은 항일운동가를 배출했던 한인민족학교 교육의 중요한 부분을 차지했다.
북간도지역은 최대 규모의 해외동포사회를 배경으로 강력한 항일운동 중심지로서 독립운동가요의 발생지이기도 했다. 북간도지역에서의 독립운동가요는 애국 열사들이 독립운동의 절박한 환경에서 자생적으로 발생된 민요풍의 노래로 시작되었지만 일제강점기 전후로 근대 서양음악의 영향을 받은 일본 창가양식의 노래가 학교교육을 통해 소개되었다. 또한 서양의 선교사들이 운영하는 사립학교나 기독교 계통의 민족학교를 중심으로 찬송가의 선율에 독립운동가 가사를 붙이는 방식의 새로운 노래가 소개되었다.
본 논문은 북간도 지역의 명동학교를 중심으로 창동학교, 광성학교 등의 기독교 계통의 학교를 중심으로 발간된 창가집들과 통일찬송가(1983년)와 『광복의 메아리』에 수록된 노래들을 중심으로 독립운동가요의 음악적 갈래를 살펴봄으로써 북만주지역 독립운동가요의 특성을 밝혀 보았다.
북간도지역에 보급된 창가집에 수록된 노래들을 분석한 결과 이 시기 창가의 음악적 특징은 첫째, 찬송가의 영향을 가장 많이 받았음을 밝혀냈다. 기독교 계통의 사립학교의 창가교육의 영향이기도 하지만, 일본 창가 역시 찬송가의 영향을 많이 받았기 때문이다. 1860년대 이후 부점을 가진 행진가풍의 찬송가가 많이 작곡되었으며, 1983년에 발행한 통일찬송가에는 이러한 부점을 사용한 리듬을 가진 곡이 약 40여 곡 이상이 수록되었고 이 찬송가 대부분은 1900년 초에 한인교회에서 많이 불리던 찬송가이다.
둘째, 일본 창가는 한인의 독립운동가요에서 찬송가의 영향과 버금가는 영향을 주었다. 독립운동가요 중에 많은 곡들이 일본 창가 <철도창가>, <용감한 수병>, <군함행진곡>, <전우> 등에서 차용되어 ‘애국창가’로 가사를 바꾸어 불렀음을 확인하였다.
셋째, 민요풍의 독립운동가의 경우 채보과정에서 창가풍으로 바뀌는 사례가 빈번하여 노래의 원형이 바뀌는 경우가 종종 나타났다. 또한 반대의 경우로 창가풍의 노래를 민요풍으로 바꾸어 부르기도 했음을 예를 들어 설명하였다.
넷째, 창가의 작곡가와 작사자에 대한 신중한 검토가 필요하다. 1913년에 편찬한 이후의 창가 책에서 <전진가>, <조국생각>, <용진가> 등의 선율에 가사와 리듬을 바꿔서 작곡자가 달라진다면 한국 근현대음악사에 커다란 오류를 범하기 때문이다. 작곡가를 알지 못한다면 미상으로 남겨두는 것이 옳다고 본다.
본 연구에서 다루지 못한 공산주의 계열의 혁명가요들은 후속연구에서 진행을 할 것이다.

영어초록

This paper surveys songs of revolution and the Korean Independence Movement as preserved by survivors from the period, from the Myeongdong School song repertoires, and from the “Choesin Changga-jip”(or “The Song Book of Recent Changga”, published in 1914 by the Gwangseong Middle School). By comparing these song repertoires with the Korean United Hymn Book (1983) and “Gwangbokgun ui Meari”(or The Echo of Korean Restoration Army, 1997), I have determined the characteristics of Korean Independence Movement songs from the 1910s in North Manchuria.
By definition, these songs of the independence movement inspire a radical, anti-Japanese feeling derived from the process of struggling for freedom under Japanese colonialism. The songs constitute a valuable historical record of Korean life in North Manchuria while promoting national consciousness as the love for the motherland, yearning, and an expression of sadness for departing lovers or separated families. They served as a mental tool in the rise of Koreans against Japanese dominance, and even as a school education for the various anti-Japanese causes that originated in North Manchuria, where the largest society of overseas Koreans resided.
Independence movement songs adopted melodies and rhythms from traditional folk songs to new texts that grew spontaneously from the patriotic environment of resistance to Japan. In the 1910s, North Presbyterian Canadian missionaries established a Christian school in North Manchuria and introduced Western hymn melodies to which Koreans adapted new song texts with patriotic sentiments.
Analysis of the 152 songs preserved in the song book “Choesin Changga-jip”, reveals the basic characteristics of these songs as follows :
first, Western music and Christian Hymns directly influenced the songs of Korean independence directly through the missionary school’s system of music education, but also indirectly through modernized Japanese Changga songs.
Among 558 songs in the book of Korean Christian Hymns (1983), more than 40 songs used the dotted
rhythm (that is, Scottish rhythm) that western composers used in the late 19th century. By the early 1900s, the Korean Hymn book included popular examples of these dotted rhythm songs.
Second, the modern Japanese Changga form influenced the Korean independence movement songs as much as the hymns. Among the Korean independence songs, Korean used Japanese songs such as “Train Changga”(The Train Song), “Brave Sea Army”, “Marine Marching Song”, “Friend of Battles”, etc. In these examples, the original text of Japanese Changga changes to a radical text supporting the Korean independence movement with Korean national sentiments.
Third, the independence movement songs which used traditional Korean styles transcribed the original triple rhythm into a dotted rhythm just as they transform Japanese Changga music sung into a Korean style. I have analyzed examples of these songs.
Fourth, we need to exercise caution in identifying original composers and authors. Previous scholars mistakenly identified composers and authors, so if you don’t really know the original composer, leave the song unattributed.
This article analyzes evidence for the origin of Korean national songs under the Japanese colonialism in 1910. I hope to continue to this study by analyzing songs of communist revolution that show the influence of these earliest songs of the Korean independence movement.
