소설 『북간도』의 연극화 연구-1980년 국립극장 공연을 중심으로- (A Study on Dramatizing of the novel 『Bukgando』-Focused on the performance of the National Theater of Korea in 1980-)

초록

안수길의 장편 소설 『북간도』는 간도라는 역사적 공간과 일제강점기라는 역사적 시간을 정확히 포착하여 구현한 소설로, 한국소설사에 있어서 매우 중요한 작품이다. 이를 각색한 연극 「북간도」 역시 1968년과 1980년 두 차례 국립극장에서 공연되었다. 연극의 경우는 여러 측면에서 가치가 있음에도 불구하고 자료에 접근하기 어려워 아직 연구되지 않은 실정이다. 이에 다양한 연구의 시작으로서 원작 소설을 연극화하는 과정에서 연극적 특성이 어느 정도 나타났다고 본다.
소설 『북간도』의 서사는 이한복 집안 4대를 중심으로 만주 전역에서 있었던 민족의 수난기를 다룬다. 그에 따라 다양한 시공간을 배경으로 하는데, 시공간에 있어서 많은 제약이 있는 연극 무대에서는 이를 모두 구현하기 어렵다. 따라서 4대에 이르는 모든 인물을 조명하는 대신 이창윤과 그의 아들 이정수에 집중하여 민족의 수난사를 다룬다. 또한 삽화적 구성과 해설자를 통해 시공간을 확장하고, 무대를 간소화함으로써 무대 위의 다양한 배경의 변화를 가능하게 한다. 연극 「북간도」에서는 작품 속의 시공간을 확장함과 동시에, 사건 구성에 있어서도 차이를 보인다. 소설에 나타난 사건들을 모두 무대 위에 구현할 수 없기에, 주인공과 관련된 주요 이야기 외에는 대사를 통해 설명하는 방식을 취한다. 또한 소설에 그려졌던 다양한 역사적 상황들이 삭제되고 그로 인해 인물들의 연애 서사가 부각되면서 인물의 행동에 정당성을 부여하는 기능을 담당하기도 한다.
소설 『북간도』에서 연극 「북간도」로의 변화는 사실적인 무대 재현이 아닌 실험적 연극 형식을 활용했기에 가능했다. 이러한 실험을 통해 하나의 방대한 원작 소설의 내용을 한 편의 연극으로 만든 것은 의미 있는 작업이다. 그러나 반대로 이러한 연극의 의도와 어울리지 않는 연극 형식의 활용은 작품의 완성도를 떨어뜨렸을지도 모른다. 연극 「북간도」에 대한 이러한 상반된 평가의 문제는 작품 외적 상황들과 관련하여 이후 연구를 통해 논의되어야 한다.

An Su-gil’s novel 『Bukgando』 is a novel that accurately describes historical space, Manchuria and historical time, the Japanese colonial period. So it is a very important novel in the history of Korean novel. The adaptation of the play 「Bukgando」 was also performed twice in the National Theater of Korea in 1968 and 1980. In the case of a play, although it is valuable in many respects, it is difficult to access the material and has not yet been studied. As a starting point for various studies, I want to find out the formal characteristics of the play 「Bukgando」 in the process of dramatizing the original novel.
The story of the novel, 『Bukgando』, revolves around four generations of Lee Han-bok’s family, and describes the period of national hardship that took place throughout Manchuria. It is thus set in various time and space, and it is difficult to implement all of this on stage of play, which has many restrictions on time and space. Therefore, instead of illuminating all the characters up to four generations, the play focuses on Lee Chang-yun and his son Lee Jeong-su to deal with the history of ethnicity. For this, time and space are expanded through Episodic composition and a commentator, and by simplifying the stage, it is possible to change various backgrounds on the stage. In the play, 「Bukgando」, there is a difference in the composition of story, as well as the expansion of time and space on the stage. Since all the events in the novel can not be realized on stage, it takes a way to explain through the dialogue. In addition, various historical situations depicted in the novel were deleted and the love history of the characters was highlighted, thus giving justification to the behavior of the characters.
The change from the novel 『Bukgando』 to the play 「Bukgando」 was possible due to the use of experimental theatrical forms rather than realistic stage reproductions. Through these experiments, it is meaningful to make the contents of a vast original novel into a play. On the contrary, however, the use of theatrical forms that do not match the intent of these plays may have reduced the perfection of the work. The problem of this contradictory assessment of the play 「Bukgando」 should be discussed through further study in relation to the circumstances outside the work.
