『北鄕』과 새로운 문학장의 발견 (『北鄕』 and the start of a new literary field)

초록

1930년대 초, 간도 용정에는 젊은 청년문인들이 자주적으로 발족한 ‘북향회’라는 문학 동인단체가 있었다. 창립 초기, 간도 용정 중등학교의 교사들로 이루어진 이 그룹은 문예강연회를 조직하고 동인지 『北鄕』을 발행하는 것을 통하여 간도로 이주한 대중들을 문화적으로 계몽시키고 역사의식을 각성시키기는 것을 기본적인 취지로 삼았으며, 식민지 통치의 어둠을 직시하고 간도에서 제2의 삶의 터전을 건설할 것을 호소하였다.
‘북향회’에서 발행한 동인지 『北鄕』은 1935년에서 1936년 사이에 고작 4호밖에 발행하지 못했지만 조선 혹은 일본에서 일정한 근대 교육을 받은 조선의 지식인들이 만주에서 최초로 발간한, 독립적인 우리말 純문예지라는 면에서 문학적 의의가 크다. 조선이 아닌 이역 땅 간도에서 이루어진 이들의 문학에는 식민지 치하의 어둡고 불평등한 현실 속에서 고통 받는 조선인들의 모습이 그려져 있고, 이국적인 정취와 더불어 동포가 살고 있는 만주에 대한 정겹고도 안타까운 감상이 드러나 있으며, 이는 고향을 떠나 이역 땅 만주로 이주하여 또 하나의 삶의 터전을 개척하고 있는 조선인들에 대한 독려로 이어진다. 이것은 두 번째 고향으로서의 만주에 대한 가능성과 희망을 배태하고 디아스포라로서 문화를 설계하는 과정이며 더 나아가 새로운 문학장의 출현을 의미한다.
‘북향회’는 발족되어서부터 해산되기까지 많은 조선 국내의 문인들이 직, 간접적으로 거쳐 갔으며 또한 무수한 조선인 작가들을 배출한 문학의 요람이었고 만주 조선인 문단 형성의 초석이었다. 재만 조선인 문학의 거장 안수길을 비롯하여 강경애, 박영준, 박계주 등 문인들은 만주 문단에서 조선인 문단을 대표하는 중요한 구성원으로 활약했고 만주로 이주한 조선인들의 구체적인 생활상을 문학 소재론적 차원에서 발굴해내었다. 또한 동인지 『北鄕』을 시작으로 하여 그 후 십여 년 동안 만주에서 꽃 핀 만주 조선문학은 우리말이 말살되어가던 일제식민지시기 문학사의 귀중한 한 부분이 된다.

영어초록

In the 1930s, young writers in Kando Yongjeong independently launched the “North Facing Flower” literary association. In the early days after its foundation, this group made up of teachers from the Kando Yongjeong Middle School organized a literary lecture and published a literary coterie magazine titled 北鄕 through which they made it their purpose to culturally enlightened the migrate populace of Kando and awaken their historical sense while appealing to the establishment of a second living foundation in Kando after facing the darkness of colonial rule.
The literary coterie magazine published by “North Facing Flower,” 北鄕, had only 4 issues published between 1935 and 1936 but it has great literary meaning in the fact that it was the first 純literary magazine independently published in Korean by Chosun national intellectuals who have received modern education in Chosun or Japan in Manchuria. Their literature which was established not in Chosun but in a foreign country of Kando depicted the Chosun people suffering under the dark and unequal reality of the colonial government, bringing out the exotic atmosphere along with the affectionate yet regrettable feelings towards the compartiots living in Manchuria, leading to the encouragement for the populace who have left their hometown to migrate to the rough and wild Manchuria and establish another living foundation. This conceived new potential and hope towards Manchuria, their second hometown and through the diaspora it was the process to establish their culture and further on create a new literary field.
Since its foundation and until its dissolution, various Chosun national writers have directly and indirectly passed through “North Facing Flower” and it also served as a literary cradle that produced countless Chosun writers, forming the cornerstone for the Manchu-Chosun literary world. Virtuosos of the Manchu-Chosun literature such as Ahn Soo-kil, Kang Kyeong-a, Park Young-joon, Park Gye-ju and other writers were important representatives of the Manchu literary world as well as the Chosun literary world who have actively participated and they have used the detailed life of the Chosun people who have migrated to Manchuria as a source and have been able to bring out an even greater literature. Also, by starting the literary coterie magazine 北鄕 and for various tens of years afterwards the Manchu-Chosun Humanities flourished and the national literature took its part in filling the gap of the dark age where the Japanese colonial rule tried to annihilate the Korean language, remaining as an important cultural heritage.
