조선후기 부평부(富平府) 고지도 상 지명의 유형과 의미 (The Types and Meanings of Place Names on the Old Maps in the Late Joseon Dynasty: the Case of Bupyeong)

초록

본 연구에서는 조선 후기 부평부 지역과 관련된 군ㆍ현 단위 고지도 상의지명을 대상으로 그 유형 및 의미를 탐색해 보았다. 조선후기 부평부 관련 고지도는 현재의 인천시 계양구ㆍ부평구ㆍ서구, 경기도 부천시, 그리고 서울의강서구와 구로구 일부 동리를 포함하는 광범위한 지역을 담고 있다. 부평부고지도에서 확인된 지명을 대상으로 지역의 생태환경을 구성하는 산과 물 관련 지명, 지방 행정구역 및 전통 중심지(읍치) 관련 지명, 지도 제작 당시 공유되고 있던 공간인식체계로서 풍수 관련 지명 등으로 유형을 분류하고 그의미를 읽어보고자 시도하였다.
먼저 산과 물 관련 지명을 보면 부평부의 진산ㆍ주산인 계양산을 비롯하여부평부 지역을 거시적 수준의 부평분지 영역과 미시적인 읍치 국면으로 나누게 되는 주요 산 지명을 확인할 수 있다. 그에 반해 부평부 관내에서 발원하거나 관통하는 하천 관련 지명은 전혀 등장하지 않는다. 이는 서해 감조구역초입 부분에 위치한 부평부의 지리적 여건 상 바닷물의 영향력이 컸기 때문이 아닌가 한다. 그로 인해 부평부 고지도 상에서는 하천수 확보를 위해 축조되는 연못이나 방축(제언) 관련 지명이 여타 유형의 지명 사례보다 상대적으로 비중 있게 재현되고 있지 않은가 한다.
다음으로 행정지명인데 부평부 고지도에서는 대부분 면 단위 수준의 행정지명과 서해 경기만에 있는 주요 섬 지명이 표시되어 있다. 그리고 근대 이전부평부의 행정중심지이자 교통의 결절지였던 읍치 관련 지명으로는 여타 군· 현에 비해 읍치 공간을 구성하는 행정이나 제사시설 명칭이 지극히 소략하고 오히려 읍치를 중심으로 지역 내 주 간선도로이자 광역도로체계를 형성했던 주요 도로, 고개, 교량, 나루 등의 명칭이 거의 빠짐없이 등장하고 있다.
이것은 지리적 위치 상 부평부가 국도 한양과의 관계 속에서 주요한 전략적요충지이면서 동시에 바닷길과 연계되는 육상 교통체계의 핵심적인 결절지로역할 해 왔음을 짐작케 하는 부분이다.
마지막으로 전통지리 풍수 관련 지명이다. 군 · 현 단위 고지도에 재현되는풍수적 요소 중 가장 일차적인 것이 풍수 진산이나 주산이다. 본 연구에서 살펴본 14종의 부평부 고지도에 유일하게 빠짐없이 등장하는 산 이름이 계양산인데 그렇기에 현재적 입장에서 볼 때에도 부평부의 진산이자 주산이었던 계양산의 역사적 장소성은 남다를 수밖에 없다. 또한 부평부 고지도에서는 풍수 비보와 관련된 조산(造山)이나 방축(防築, 堤堰), 연못 지명이 확인된다.
이는 부평부 읍치의 개방된 수구처를 보완하기 위해 풍수적 목적으로 조성되었다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the types and meanings of place names represented on the old maps of Bupyeong County in the late Joseon Dynasty.
Bupyeong County in the late Joseon Dynasty included a wide area including the current Gyeyang-gu, Bupyeong-gu, Seo-gu in Incheon metropolitan city, Bucheon in Gyeonggi province, several local areas of Gangseo-gu and Guro-gu in Seoul metropolitan city. I tried to categorize three types of palce names related to mountain and water as the regional physical environments, place names related to the regional administration and the traditional regional center(eupchi), and place names related to fengshui as the Korean traditional geography, and then to interpretate their meanings.
First, it can be seen that mountain-related names including Gyeyangsan as Jinsan or Jusan of Bupyeong county constructed Bupyeong county into two areas- macroscopic Bupyeong basin and microscopic eupchi territory as the regional center. On the other hand, there are no river-related place name that originate or penetrate in Bupyeong basin. I think that this is probably due to the influence of seawater reflecting the geographical conditions of Bupyeong area located at the beginning part of the west sea area. Therefore, we can find, in almost all of the old maps of Bupyeong county, the names of the ponds and the reservoirs (suggestion) that would have been constructed to save stream water are more than the other types of place names.
Next, the name of the administrative district is designated. In the old maps of Bupyeong county, most administrative names are related to the 'myeon' level, and the names of major islands in Gyeonggi Bay are shown. And the place names of the administrative or sacrificial facilities related to eupchi which was the administrative center of the Bupyeong county were very simple and rare.
Rather major roads, bridges, bridges, and ferries that form the regioanl road system are almost all appearing. This may be due to the geographical position that Bupyeong had played a key strategic role in the relationship with Capital Hanyang and at the same time it has served as a key nodal point of land transportation system connected with the sea route.
Finally, it is a place name related to fengshui as the Korean traditional geography. Jinsan or Jusan are the most important of fengshui-related elements represented on the old maps. So, we can identify Gyeyangsan on every old maps of Bupyeong county as Jinsan or Jusan with the historical placeness. In addition, we can find some complementary facilities such as man made mountain or hill, pond and reservoir related to fenshui bibo. It can be said that those would have been constructed for the purpose of fengshui to complement the open water gate of Bupyung eupchi territory as the regional center.
