<반도의 봄>과 <시집가는 날>의 의사-로칼리티(Pseudo-locality) 表象 (The Representation of Pseudo-locality on The Spring of Korean Peninsula and The Wedding Day)

초록

이 논문은 解放을 전후로 이병일이 演出한 두 작품, <반도의 봄>(1941)과 <시집가는 날>(1956) 사이의 反復과 差異를 규명하기 위해 씌었다. 이것은 영화 연출가로서 이병일 고유의 問題意識이 무엇인지를 확인하는 것은 물론 동시에 解放 이후 韓國映畵史가 겹쳐 쓰고 다시 쓰는 文脈을 짚어내기 위한 課題이다. 두 영화의 공유항은 朝鮮色(또는 조선적 로칼리티)이라고 하는 로칼리티의 서사적 재현과 다른 세계의 가능성을 암시하는 엔딩이다. 전자가 조선영화, 또는 한국영화의 자질에 관한 문제제기라면, 후자는 그것이 가능한 시공간적 조건에 관한 映畵的 表象이다. <반도의 봄>에서 이 양자의 결합은 불가능성이라는 비극적 결말로 치닫는 반면 <시집가는 날>에서 이것은 이미 가능한 것으로 전제된 채 희망적 분위기로 소비된다.
解放 이전과 이후, 연출가로서 이병일이 집요하게 문제 삼았던 한국영화의 資質로서 로칼리티는 不在하거나 따라서 항상 代替 가능한 기호로서의 의사-로칼리티pseudo-locality라는 연속성을 지니며, 이는 한국영화사에서 解放이 단절이라기보다 연속된 창이자 굴절된 거울임을 확인해 준다.

영어초록

As is well known 이병일’s film <시집가는 날(The Wedding Day)> is an adaptation of 오영진’s original scenario written in Japanese 「孟進士邸の慶事(The Festivity of Maeng Family)」 published in the 『國民文學(National Literature)』 during colonial Korea’s 1943. And The Festivity of Maeng Family is written as a colonial accommodation to imperial Japan’s new geopolitical order between Japan and their colonies. Focusing this fact, recently a few studies have argued that The Wedding Day does have contradictory characters in its anti colonialism being derived from colonialism. Even though this might be right, Those arguements seems to be problematic because there could not be found 이병일’s willing and inherent motivation as a director.
So this essay will establish what is distinctively characteristic of 이병일, who as a director, overwrote and rewrote <반도의 봄(The Spring of Korean Peninsula)>(1941), which was directed before the liberation that transitioned to The Wedding Day after the liberation. This is adjacent to the propositions of the ‘political unconscious’. If political unconscious is revealed during a process to resolve social contradiction symbolically and imaginatively because the inherent social contradiction continues and cannot be determined;notwithstanding the contradiction have been solved autwardly after liberation, 이병일’s productions still appear to depend on the symbolic and the imagination, which is in fact another cinematic contradiction.
This essay will answer to the following question via such demonstration. As much as the language that instructed our film changed from “조선영화(Chosun Film)” to “한국영화(Korean Film)”, did films after the liberation appropriate the strict meaning of liberation to a complete break, ‘severance’? We can only give a skeptical response. This essay investigates the possibility of the absence of the signified/ or its contradictory symbol that Korean film language devised in order to apply and interpret the same phenomenon differently.
