≪판타지아≫ 중 ≪봄의 제전≫ 음악과 영상의 상관관계 연구 (A Study on the Correlation between Music and Image from The Rite of Spring Sequences in Fantasia)

초록

≪판타지아≫는 세계적으로 유명한 애니메이션 제작회사인 월트 디즈니의 작품으로, 기존의 클래식 음악에 영상 제작의 방법과 편집을 적용시킨 작품이다. 본 논문은 ≪판타지아≫ 중 영상과 음악의 결합 양상의 특징이 비교적 뚜렷하게 구분되어 있는 스트라빈스키의 ≪봄의 제전≫을 통해 음악 요소와 영상과의 상관관계를 연구했다.
첫째, 음악의 형식과 제시된 빠르기에 따라 구분되는 영상의 구조를 파악해 본 결과, 작품의 형식에 제시된 빠르기에 따라 영상의 구조가 구분되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 제5시퀀스를 중심으로 대칭적 구조를 형성하고 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 음악 작품을 분석해 음악의 요소들을 파악해 보았으며, 영상 이미지 표현과 동기화된 영상과 음악 요소를 분석하여, 이를 통한 영상의 이미지와 연계할 수 있는 상관관계를 찾아보았다. 그 결과 각 시퀀스별 동기화 부분이 다양하게 나타났으며, 악기 편성, 악기 등장, 다양한 리듬, 악기 주법으로는 트릴, 트레몰로, 하모닉스 등과 음역, 다이내믹, 선율 방향 등 여러 음악적 요소에 따라 연계하여 영상의 이미지가 표현되었다. 셋째, 영상의 이미지에 사용된 색채를 분석한 결과, ≪봄의 제전≫ 영상 색채는 빨강 파랑, 주황과 노랑 계열, 파랑 계열로 대부분 사용되었다. 제5시퀀스를 중심축으로 아치형태의 대칭 구조로 동일한 색채의 계열이 적용된 것을 알 수 있었으며, 카메라 이동 방향도 동일한 아치형 형태로 대칭되며 적용되었다. 또한 음악의 요소들 중 음색을 나타낼 수 있는 악기를 악기 색채 이론을 제시한 알베르 라비냑의 악기색채 이론에 의해 ≪봄의 제전≫ 색채를 적용한 결과, 라비냑의 이론과 비교적 동일한 영상 색채의 결과를 가져왔다. 즉, 영상의 색채는 음색이 다른 악기들이 주는 감각적 시각에 고려되어 색채가 적용된 점을 알 수 있었다. ≪봄의 제전≫의 영상 이미지 작업 시 악기들이 나타나는 음색이 영상 이미지에 적용된 점을 본다면 청감각을 통해 감지되는 시각적 연상이 일어난 작품이라 볼 수 있다. 이와 같이 음악과 영상과의 관계를 연구한 결과, 음악의 다양한 요소들은 이미지 표현에 적용되고 있으며, 이는 영상의 이미지 작업 이후 영상 음악의 창작 시 고려되고 적용된다면 미래의 영상과 음악의 결합의 질적 수준의 향상을 기대해 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

Fantasia is a full length animation film of the world famous Walt Disney studio. Attempts at editing and using a method applying pre-made classical music to the production of the imagery were made and music structure and elements applied in the composition of the images. This thesis looks into the correlation between the musical elements and the imagery in Fantasia through comparison of the union of imagery and music and the features of the imagery clearly defined in Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.
Firstly, as a result of the attempt at grasping the structure of imagery divided according to the type of music and its suggested pace we were able to understand how the structure of imagery was divided according the tempo. Moreover, the forming of a symmetrical structure was found to exist with the 5th sequence as the focus.
Secondly, attempts were made to understand the musical elements by analysis of the musical piece, and the expressionism of the imagery as well as the elements of the synchronized music and imagery were analyzed, through which a correlation enabling a linkage with the imagery was found. The result was the appearance of synchronized parts varying according to sequence, as well as the portrayal of imagery according to the advent of each musical instrument, diverse rhythyms and by various musical elements such as trill, tremolo, harmonics and a dynamic, melodic direction. The story within the imagery unfolds in harmony with the course of time.
Thirdly, tones of red, orange, yellow and blue were mostly used in The Rite of Spring sequence. Matching tones were applied in a symmetrical arch formation centered in sequence 5-1, while the movement of the camera was also done in way identical to that of a symmetrical arch. Futhermore color tones from Albert Lavignac’s theory were applied. Therefore, taking into account the fact that sequences were made after applying imagery to existing music and the point considering the application of tones produced by musical instruments on the imagery at the time of production, it can be noted that this work is a visual association perceived through sensitivity.
Various musical elements were found to be applied to the portrayal of the imagery, as well as the existence of an intimate connection. The type of music also relates to the story’s composition and the advent of a musical instrument complemented the appearance of imagery, and various musical elements were used in a complex manner for the reproduction of movements and actions. The pizzicato, trill, tremolo, harmonics and diverse playing methods relevant to the distinctive characteristics of each instrument were applied as important elements of the images expressiveness and the melody’s direction, dynamic, instrument’s musical range etc. were applied to maximizing elements in the depiction and portrayal of the imagery.
