이슬람 여성의 할례를 보는 다양한 시각에 대한 소고 (Islamic Women and Circumcision)

초록

이 글은 이슬람 여성의 할례에 대한 연구이다. 여성할례는 시대에 따라 그 의미가 변화되어 왔다. 전근대에는 성인식이자 입문식의 기능을 담당했으며, 근대에는 상징질서와 대타자에 대한 존중의 의미를 지녔다. 탈근대 사회에서는 주체의 실재계에 대한 욕망을 표현하고 있다. 그런데 엄밀하게 한 국가나 지역에 대해서 하나로만 성격을 규정할 수는 없다. 중동, 아프리카 지역은 전근대와 근대가 혼재되어 있으며, 서구 사회의 이슬람 공동체에는 전근대와 근대, 탈근대의 특성이 모두 공존 하고 있다. 한편 서구 이민자들의 여성할례는 ‘육신의 반항’일 수 있다. 그러나 이것은 서구사회라는 대타자에 대한 불신과 저항을, 소속을 정하고 정체성을 고정시켜는 방식으로 표출하는 측면이 강하기에 유사사건에 불과하며, 비윤리적인 행위이다.
여성할례에 대한 다양한 주장들이 있다. 여성의 몸에 각인된 가부장제로 보는 서구 페미니스트들, ‘서구의 보편적’ 인권의 잣대로 보는 시각에 대해 비판적인 이슬람 여성운동가들, 할례가 여성들로 하여금 몸을 팰러스화 하여 획득할 수 있는 방법이라고 보는 정신분석가들이 있다.
그러나 여성할례가 남성권력의 상상적 동일시와 완전성에 대한 환상에서 출발한 것이라면 당연히 여성할례는 근절되어야 공허한 관습일 것이다. 다만 이슬람 여성이 하나가 아니듯 여성할례에 대해서도 다양한 시각으로 고찰할 수 있는 사고의 유연성이 문제해결의 출발점이 될 것이다.

영어초록

This article studies the circumcision of Islamic women. Female circumcision is not a duty in Islam, and the origin of the practice is not clear, either. The meaning of female circumcision has been changed throughout the ages. In pre-modern society it was used to mark sexual identity and to give the subject an institutional approval for reproduction. It was a coming-of-age ceremony and an initiation. In modern society, the subjects do not need to “sign” or make that mark on their body because they have already received their identity from the society from the moment they were born. However, the subject accepts the circumcision as a sign of respect to the big Other. The subject has a imaginary relationship with the big Other. In the post-modern age, the subject choses circumcision as a sign of the emptiness of the big Other, that is to say, it is a desire for the Real.
However, it is not possible to define all these aspects with only one term. Pre-modern, modern and post-modern society can be exist at the same time. The pre-modern and modern period is co-existing in the Middle-East and African regions. What is more, we can find these three characteristics of pre-modern, modern and post-modern society in the Muslim communities of Western countries. There are those who practice circumcision to prove their real existence. In that case, it is said to be ‘resistance of the body’. Still, it is not unethical activity or a fictitious event, and the subjects express their anger and complain about the big Other, namely Western society which places them in their position and creates their identity.
Regarding human rights, Western feminists criticize female circumcision saying that it is carried out by force and represents the imposition of a patriarchal system carving up the bodies of women. On the other hand, Islamic feminists oppose the idea of “universality” in the Western sense. They also say that female circumcision helps make women’s body by attributing them a phallus-like quality.
In conclusion, female circumcision is not a simple concept as carried out by Islamic women. The point of view which sees circumcision as violent and savage is also the act of eliminating the dual Other.
