기업특성을 고려한 ESG 포트폴리오 구성 전략별 투자성과 실증분석 (An Empirical Analysis of Investment Performance by ESG Portfolio Composition Strategy Considering Corporate Characteristics)

초록

본 연구는 CSR활동의 동기요인으로 알려진 기업특성 요인(지배구조, 내부적 역량, CSR지속성)이 CSR활동을 효율적으로 촉진시켜 기업가치를 제고시키는지 조절효과 분석을 통해 유의성을 확인하였다. 이와 함께 CSR활동 우수기업 중 기업특성 요인을 반영하여 구성한 21개 ESG 포트폴리오의 투자성과를 벤치마크와 비교 분석하였고, 나아가 초과수익률의 유의성을 Fama and French(1993) 3요인 모형을 통해 확인하였다. 조절효과 분석결과, 우수한 지배구조(지배구조등급 B+이상), 안정적인 재무구조(낮은 부채비율), 높은 수익성(높은 EBITDA마진율), 양호한 현금흐름(높은 총자산대비영업활동현금흐름비율) 및 규모가 큰(높은 총자산) 특성을 지닌 기업과 지속적으로 적극적인 CSR 활동(3년 연속 ESG통합등급 B+이상)을 수행한 기업에서 CSR활동을 효율적으로 수행하여 기업가치를 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 투자성과 분석결과, ESG 통합등급 B+이상 기업 중에서 지배구조, 안정성, 수익성, 현금흐름 지표가 우수한 기업들로 구성된 포트폴리오의 Sharp지수, Treynor지수, Jensen의 알파가 벤치마크 대비 높게 나타났고 3요인 모형의 초과수익률이 유의한 양(+) 값을 가져 기존의 자산가격결정모형으로 설명할 수 없는 추가수익 창출 가능성을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 기업특성을 고려한 ESG 포트폴리오 투자성과가 벤치마크 대비 유의한 양(+)의 초과수익률을 시현함을 제시하였다는 점에서 중요한 학문적 차별성을 가지며, 이러한 연구결과가 연기금 등 기관투자자들의 SRI 전략 수립과 자산운용사의 SRI 상품개발에 실무적 도움을 제공하여 사회 공익적 가치와 더불어 재무적 성과 달성에 기여할 수 있다는 점에서 경제적 의의가 있다.

영어초록

This study confirmed the significance through the analysis of the moderating effect of whether the corporate characteristic factors (governance structure, internal competence, CSR persistence), which are known as motivation factors of CSR activities, effectively promote CSR activities and enhance corporate value. In addition, the investment performance of the 21 ESG portfolios, which were formed by reflecting the factors of corporate characteristics among the best companies in CSR activities, was compared with the benchmark and the significance of the excess returns was confirmed through the three-factor model of Fama and French (1993).
According to the results of the moderating effect, excellent governance (above governance grade B+), stable financial structure (the lower debt ratio), high profitability (the higher EBITDA margin ratio), good cash flow (the higher the ratio of operating activity cash flows to total assets), large assets and companies that have carried out continuous CSR activities (the third consecutive ESG Integrated grade B+ or higher) perform CSR activities efficiently to increase corporate value.
Investment performance analysis showed that the Sharp Index, Treynor Index, and Jensen's alpha of the portfolio consisting of companies with excellent governance, stability, profitability, and good cash flow among ESG Integrated Grade B+ and above were higher than the benchmark. The excess return had a significant positive value, confirming the possibility of generating additional revenue that cannot be explained by the existing asset pricing model.
This study has significant academic distinction in that the investment performance of ESG portfolio considering the corporate characteristics shows a significant positive excess return compared to the benchmark. In addition, the result of this study is economically meaningful in that it can contribute to the achievement of financial performance in addition to social public interest by providing practical help to the establishment of SRI strategies for institutional investors, including pension funds, and the development of SRI products for asset managers.
