和齋 卞相璧의 翎毛花草畵 硏究 (A Study on Bird-and-animal paintings(翎毛花草畵) of Byeon Sang-byeok(卞相璧, 1726?-1775))

초록

卞相璧(약 1726-1775)은 英祖代에 활약한 圖畵署 畵員으로 翎毛花草畵,肖像畵 분야에서 명성을 얻으며 발군의 기량을 드러내었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 변상벽에 대한 연구는 그가 그린 작품의 단편적인 해석에만 머물러 있었다. 이 논문에서는 그 동안 막연하게 알려져 온 변상벽의 생애를 정리해보고그의 작품들 중 회화적 특징이 가장 잘 나타난다고 생각되는 영모화초화의양상을 고찰해 보았다.
변상벽은 영남의 명문인 密陽卞氏 孝亮公派의 21대 손으로 무관 卞雲瑞의 차남으로 태어났다. 역관으로 활동한 5대조 卞應星 때 부터 집안이 중인층으로 전환된 것으로 보이며, 변상벽을 필두로 양아들인 卞光復과 조카인 卞光翼이 화원으로 활동하였다. 변상벽의 영모화초화에 대한 기록으로는 鄭克淳의 『庶尹公遺稿』속 「卞氏畵記」가 유일하며 이를 통해 변상벽의 생년과 성격, 영모화초화의 도상과작화계기, 작화태도 등을 알 수 있었다.
현존하는 변상벽의 영모화초화 작품들은 모두 34점으로 대부분 고양이와닭을 주제로 하였는데 작품의 질과 관지에 차이가 있어 그 진위가 불분명하다. 따라서 변상벽 영모화초화의 도상과 질을 대표하는 <猫雀圖>, <菊庭秋猫>, <母鷄領子圖>, <雌雄將雛> 를 중심으로 그의 작품세계를 살펴보았다. 변상벽 작품들은 영모화초화의 전통을 계승하고 당시 시대적 유행을 복합적으로 수용한 모습을 보였다. 중국에서 고양이와 닭을 주제로 한 작품이나기록이 남아있는 것은 宋代 부터로 北宋代 『宣和畵譜』 속 기록과 당시 작품들의 도상이 전해지며 이것이 조선에 간접적으로 영향을 준 것으로 보인다.
조선시대 고양이와 닭을 주제로 한 작품과 기록은 李巖, 鄭歚의 작품들과 金中淸, 南有容, 李瀷, 丁若鏞등이 남긴 기록들이 있는데, 이 또한 조선후기 영모화초화에 선례가 되었다. 18세기 조선의 화단에서는 문인들의 사상적 변화에 의한 형사적 회화관의 대두, 중국화보의 수용 등이 유행하여 당시 문화전반에 영향을 미쳤다.
고양이를 주제로 한 <묘작도>와 <국정추묘>는 이암, 정선 고양이 작품의도상적 영향을 기반으로 조선후기 유행된 관찰을 통한 치밀한 묘사와 중국화보의 영향을 받은 배경경물의 활용이 접목되었다. 닭을 주제로 한 <모계령자도>와 <자웅장추>는 중국 송대부터 기록이 전해지는 “자모계도”의 도상적 영향을 바탕으로 조선의 닭과 중국화보의 유행이 합쳐졌다. 이러한 변상벽의 영모화초화는 영조어진을 제작하며 인연을 쌓았던 金弘道와 변상벽의 작품을 감상하고 제발을 남겼던 馬君厚 그리고 변상벽이 고양이 그림을 그려준 동래정씨 가문과 사돈관계에 있었던 南啓宇 등에게 간접적인 영향을 미친 것으로 생각되는데, 이들은 모두 변상벽의 작품과 유사한 소재 및 구도로 영모화초화를 제작하였다. 이 논문은 변상벽의 가계와 생애를 정리하고 그간 단편적으로 거론되었던 변상벽의 영모화초화를 종합적으로 살펴보았다는 데 의의가 있다. 추후 새로운 사료 및 작품의 추가발굴을 통해 보다 정확한 변상벽의 생애와 작품세계에 대한 고찰이 요구된다.

영어초록

Byeon Sang-byeok(卞相璧, 1726?-1775)was a court painter during the periodof Yeong-jo in Joseon Dynasty era. He demonstrated his exceptional abilitywith a fame of Bird-and-animal paintings(翎毛花草畵) and protrait field. Notwithstanding, studies on Byeon stay on simple fragmentary interpretation.
Accordingly, this study was aimed at reorganizing his life events which havebeen indefinitely known and examining his paintings of Bird-and-animalpaintings, which show his artistic characteristics best. Byeon Sang-byeok was the second child of Byeon Un-seo(卞雲瑞), a militaryofficer, as the 21st descent of Hyo-yagn-gong-pa of Byeon family in Mir-yang(密陽卞氏 孝亮公派), Young-nam(嶺南) prestigious family. The family seemedto be transferred to the middle-class since Byeon Eung-seong(卞應星), the 5thancestor of interpreting officer. Byeon Sang-byeok was at the head ofpainters along with Byeon Gwang-bok(卞光復), his adopted son and ByeonGwang-ik(卞光翼), his niece.
His paintings of Bird-and-animal paintings were recorded only in 「Byeonsihwagi(卞氏畵記)」 of 『Seoyungoyougo(庶尹公遺稿)』 written by Jeong Geuk-soon(鄭克淳). The record made it possible to estimate Byeon Sang-byeok’ birth year,personality,and iconoghrapy, painting motives and painting attitude of Birdand-ani mal paintings. There are total existing 34 painting works of Byeon Sang-byeok’ Bird-andanimalpaintings, whose motifs are mostly cats and chickens. It is not obvious whether all those works aregenuine because there are a variety of quality and signature or seal.
Consequently his oeuvres were aimed to be examined, specifically with<Myo-jak-do(猫雀圖)>, <guk-jeong-chu-myo(菊庭秋猫)>, <Mo-gyeo-young-ja-do(母鷄領子圖)>, <Ja-ung-jang-chu(雌雄將雛)> as the center of Byeon Sang-byeok’representative iconoghrapy and quality. Byeon Sang-byeok’ paintings succeeded to the tradition of Bird-and-animalpaintings and consolidated the trends at that time. Chinese paintings with catsand chickens as motifs came down from Song Dynasty era, and 『Xuanhehuapu(『宣和畵譜』 Xuanhe Painting Catalogue)』 in the Northern Song Dynastyera included the record and iconoghrapy of contemporary paintings. Therecord of paintings with cats and chickens as motifs in the Joseon Dynastyera followed the precedents of paintings of Yi am(李巖)and Jeong seon(鄭歚),and the records Gim Jung-cheong(金中淸), Nam Yu-yong(南有容), Yi-ik(李瀷),and Jeong Yak-yong(丁若鏞) had left.
In 18 century, literators’ horticulture hobby, practicality principle, reception ofManual of Painting(畵譜) were popular and influential upon Joseon paintingsas well as culture at large.
<Myo-jak-do(猫雀圖)> and <guk-jeong-chu-myo(菊庭秋猫)> with cats as amotif were based on the iconoghrapy of cat paintings by Yi am(李巖)andJeong seon(鄭歚), and adopted by elaborate description through observationpopular in late Joseon and application of background objects influenced byManual of Painting. <Mo-gyeo-young-ja-do(母鷄領子圖)> and <Ja-ung-jang-chu(雌雄將雛)> with chickens as a motif were based on the iconoghrapyinfluence of "Ja-mo-gyeo(子母鷄)", the Song Dynasty record and consolidatedwith Joseon chicken and Manual of Painting trend.
Byeon Sang-byeok’ Bird-and-animal paintings influenced Kim Hong-do(金弘道)who painted the portrait of Yeong-jo the Great and Ma Geun-ho(馬君厚) whoappreciated Byeon Sang-byeok’s paintings and wrote epilogue of ancestralrites for Byeon Sang-byeok. It is considered that it also had indirect influenceon Nam Gye-woo(南啓宇) who had in-law relation with Jeong family inDongnae(東萊鄭氏) Byeon Sang-byeok had given a cat painting. All of them produced paintings with similar motif and composition as ByeonSang-byeok’s.
This study focused on the reorganization of Byeon Sang-byeok’s family treeand life events and the specific discussion about his paintings. Its significancelies on giving a detailed account on Byeon Sang-byeok’ Bird-and-animalpaintings, discussed fragmentarily. In the future, it is required that ByeonSang-byeok’ more accurate life and oeuvres be researched through followingnew discovery of historical records and painting works.
