일본정신으로서의 벚꽃 표상의 성립－시키시마 노래와 시원의 벚꽃－ (One Japan, Sakura of the Origin: focusing on the Mountain Cherry Blossoms in the Shikishima Song)

초록

에도 시대의 모토오리 노리나가(本居宣長)가 읊은 시키시마 노래(敷島歌)는 벚꽃＝일본정신＝무사도라는 언설의 중심에 자리하고 있다. 즉 이 노래에 의해 벚꽃을 일본정신의 상징으로 생각하게 되었다고 해도 좋을 만큼, 메이지 시대부터 태평양전쟁에 이르기까지 벚꽃의 의미가 정치군사적으로 변용되는 메커니즘에 노리나가가 깊이 관여되어 있다. 이 글은 근대 일본의 국책사업 진행과정 중에 대대적으로 선전되면서 온 국민에게 널리 알려지게 된 시키시마 노래를 축으로 하여, 벚꽃 표상 담론의 일면과 거기에 내포되어 있는 문제성에 대해 생각해본 것이다.
먼저 전시 하에 시키시마 노래가 수많은 곡해에 싸여 원용된 예를 당시 국어교과서를 통해 살펴보았다. 그 중에서도 일명 사쿠라 독본(サクラ読本)은 벚꽃과 일본정신을 직접적으로 연결시키며 교재 전체에 벚꽃의 상징을 암시하고 있다. 원래 시키시마 노래는 아침햇살에 본연의 빛을 발하는 산벚꽃의 아름다움을 야마토 정신(大和心)에 빗대어 읊은 것이었다. 여기서 말하는 야마토 정신이 반드시 일본정신을 뜻하는 것은 아닐뿐더러, 그것이 노리나가 사상의 핵심이었다고도 할 수 없다. 하지만 이 노래의 수용 양상은 점차 변질되어간다. 특히 시키시마 노래와 벚꽃을 무사도의 문맥으로 바꿔 읽는 데 결정적 역할을 한 것은 니토베 이나조(新渡戸稲造)의 『무사도』였다. 더욱이 노리나가에게서 기원을 찾는 언설은 단순한 벚꽃 예찬이 아니라, 벚꽃 중의 벚꽃, 즉 일본의 시원의 벚꽃으로 산벚꽃을 재발견하는 것으로 이어진다. 요컨대 산벚꽃으로 집약되는 단 하나의 벚꽃다움은 곧 유일한 일본다움을 의미하게 되는 것이다.
시키시마 노래가 잘못 이해되어왔다고 지적하는 것은 비교적 간단하나, 이 노래가 한때 산벚꽃 언설과 함께 일본 전역에 퍼져 군국주의 이데올로기로서 기능했다는 사실을 단순히 오독이라고 잘라 말하는 것은 결코 온당하다고 할 수 없다.

영어초록

The Shikishima song written by Motoori Norinaga, the Japanese scholar in the Edo period, is in the center of the discourse of cherry blossoms=the spirit of Japan＝Bushido. To put it bluntly, it was due to this song that cherry blossoms emerged as the symbol of the spirit of Japan, and this song was behind the mechanism in which the meaning of cherry blossoms went through political-military transformation from the Meiji Era to the Pacific War period. The present article is an exploration of an aspect of the discourse of the representation of cherry blossoms and the problem implicit in it, centered on the Shikishima song which came to be known to the whole nation through the extensive propaganda in the process of carrying out the national projects of modern Japan.
First, this study examined the Japanese language textbooks during the war period for discussion of cases of distortion and appropriation of the Shikishima song at that time. Among them, the so-called Sakura-dokuhon links cherry blossoms directly to the spirit of Japan and is replete with the symbol of cherry blossoms throughout the book. Originally, the Shikishima song was about the beauty of cherry blossoms emitting their true light in the morning sun in comparison with the Yamato spirit. The Yamato spirit here does not necessarily mean the spirit of Japan, and nor can it be said that it was the essence of the thought of Norinaga. But the reception of the song gradually went through a change. Especially, it was Bushido by Nitobe Inazō that played a decisive role in reading the Shikishima song and cherry blossoms in the context of Bushido. Further, the discourse originated from Norinaga leads to not just admiration of cheery blossoms but the rediscovery of mountain cherry blossoms which are the cherry blossoms of the origin. In short, the single (the most simple, pure, and natural) nature of cherry blossoms which is condensed in the mountain cherry blossoms comes to mean the sole nature of Japan.
It is comparatively easy to point out that the Shikishima song has been misunderstood, but it can never be appropriate to say definitely it is a misreading if one points out that the song had once spread to the whole nation with the discourse of mountain cherry blossoms and functioned as a militarist ideology.
