백불암의 修身·齊家 관련 규범에 대하여 (A Study on‘Baek-Bul-Am’s Norm -Regarding Moral Cultivation and Home Regulation)

초록

본 논문은 최흥원(崔興遠, 1705∼1786)(호는 百弗庵)이 夫仁洞과 漆溪에 樂土를 건설하기 위해 제시한 規範에 대해 살피는 것을 그 목적으로 하고 있다. 백불암은 향촌사회와 동성집단의 유교적 이상향을 만들기 위하여 ‘공동의 가치’, ‘도덕적 품격’ 및 ‘좋은 법도’를 세우는 것이 가장 중요하다고 생각했다. 이러한 맥락 속에서 형성된 것이 「訓」ㆍ「箴」ㆍ「銘」ㆍ「家訓」ㆍ「節目」ㆍ「規約」 등이며, 修身ㆍ齊家ㆍ族內ㆍ族外 및 堂號 관련 등 네 가지 규범으로 나눌 수 있다.
이 논문에서는 여러 규범 중에서 修身‧齊家와 관련된 규범, 다시 말해서 훈잠명류 8종(敬ㆍ孝悌堂銘ㆍ讀大學箴ㆍ齋居箴示學者ㆍ傳事說,ㆍ書與諸兒訓ㆍ願習說ㆍ廣居庵銘), 家訓 1종 및 立春帖 1종 도합 10종에 대하여 각 규범의 내용과 특징을 검토하였다.
백불암은 규범을 통해 개인, 문중과 향촌인을 규율하거나 자율적으로 따르도록 유도하는 일종의 행동양식에 대한 기준을 제시하였다. 추상적ㆍ관념적인 토론보다 구체적이고 실천적인 차원에서 모든 규범을 고려했다는 점에서 實學的이며 그의 핵심 실천사상을 내포하고 있다고 말할 수 있다. 修身‧齊家 관련 규범을 통해 전달하고자 했던 메시지를 정리하면 아래와 같다.
첫째, 「敬」의 수행을 통해 겉으로 언행을 제어하여 속마음을 길러 모두가 『中庸』의 中和의 경지, 즉 모든 것이 제자리에 서고 만물이 무럭무럭 자라는 상태가 되어 가문과 향촌이 유교적 이상사회가 건설되기를 바라는 여망을 담은 것이다.
둘째, 「太極圖說」과 「西銘」의 萬物一體論에 많은 영향을 받아 평등주의적‧인도주의적 생활철학이 체득되도록 하려는 의도가 있었다.
셋째, 각 규범들을 각 처소마다 揭示하여 시각적이며 반복훈련이라는 특징을 보이며, 언어에 의한 훈도를 줄이고 無爲之治의 경지, 즉 간섭과 지도가 적어도 자연스럽게 실천되고 涵養되어 지행합일을 이루려는 방법을 백불암은 선택하였다.
넷째, 백불암에게 많은 영향을 준 것은 孝悌와 仁義를 바탕으로 한 程朱學이며. 여러 규범 에서 先知後行이 중시되고 있어 陽明學의 知行合一說과는 약간의 거리를 나타내고 있다.
이와 같이 백불암은 선대(先代)의 ‘무가(武家)에서 문가(文家)로 전환’하며 가격(家格)을 올리는 과정에서 가문의 병폐, 즉 협기(俠氣)와 패술(覇術)과 미생지신(尾生之信)과 같은 맹목적인 신념을 고치고 지행합일의 가풍을 만들려 노력한 것 같다. 이런 맥락에서 수신(修身)부문 6종과 제가(齊家)부문 4종[효제당명ㆍ가훈ㆍ전사설ㆍ입춘첩]의 규범을 철저히 정착시키고 유교적 가치체계에 의한 칠계낙토(漆溪樂土)를 만들려 노력한 것을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper is a study on Baek-Bul-Am(Choi- Heung-Won, 百弗庵, 崔興遠 1705～1786)'s Norm(規範) based on Confucianism, which he established for the purpose of constructing his hometown(Otgol & Buindong-Dong) as a paradise. Baek-Bul-Am's attention was paid to setting up 'moral dignity’, ‘common value’ and ‘exemplary legislative custom’ which are thought to be the most important points needed for the society of clan and country as a confucian utopia. The instructions(訓), the admonition(箴), the vigilance(銘), the family motto(家訓), the regulations(節目) and the rules(規約) were made to meet his belief and the Norm can be classified into four categories : moral cultivation and home regulation(修身·齊家), the clan(族內), the country(族外) and Dangho(堂號). And the Norm can be said to be the practical core of his thoughts because it was established on the rather practical and pragmatic level instead of monotonous discussion and ideological disputes.
This paper discusses the total 10 items of the Norm related to moral cultivation and home regulation(修身·齊家) and analyzes its contents and features. Also the features are well reflected in the following messages which Baek-Bul-Am intended to deliver through his Norm.
First, he expected that the people in his clan and country could control the speech and the action through practicing 'Mindfulness(敬)', eventually reaching 'the states of equilibrium(中和)' of 'the Doctrine of the Mean(中庸)'. He thought that the Confucian paradise he dreamed of could be established therethrough, in which all things would be nourished and flourish in the right places.
Second, Baek-Bul-Am's Norm was mostly influenced by the Diagram of Supreme Ultimate(太極圖說) and the Sameness of All Creation(萬物一體論) of Western Inscription(西銘) and showed practical philosophy with egalitarian and humanistic values.
Third, each item of his Norm was posted on many conspicuous places for visual effects and repeated training. Baek-Bul-Am chose the governing way of 'letting nature be-Wuwei'(無爲之治) to reach the unity of knowledge and conduct through spontaneous practice and cultivation with minimum discipline, instruction and intervention.
Fourth, the main factors which had influence on his Norm were filial piety and brotherly love(孝悌之道) and benevolence and righteousness(仁義) based on Neo-Confucianism, and put emphasis on former learning and latter behaviour(先知後行), which is quite different from the Unity of Knowledge and Behaviour(知行合一說) directed in the philosophy of Wang Yangming(陽明學).
Baek-Bul-Am had tried to eradicate traditional ways of family ills(gallant and get-up-and-go spirit, and blind belief) to have unity of knowledge and conduct(知行合一). Also he had tried to establish his hometown as a paradise(ethical pleasure) with his Norm based on confucian traditional values, and to meet his ancestral injunction calling for replacing the traditionalized martial arts by literary arts(變武爲文) together with enhancing the dignity of his family tradition with filial piety and brotherly love(孝悌之道). Further studies on this Norm will be performed in the near future in comparison with those of some other families in the Chosen Dynasty.
