초록

This study attempts to investigate the acoustic characteristics of L*(low pitch accent) in English utterances produced by native speakers of English and Korean learners of English. To obtain more reliable results, the changes of the acoustic values (F0, intensity, syllable duration) were normalized. Acoustic values of non-focused words were compared with those of focused words within each group (Americans or Koreans). Furthermore, acoustic values of focused words were compared between the two groups. In the instances in which a significant Group (Americans and Koreans) x Sentence Type (yes-no, alternative, incredulity question) interaction was obtained, further analysis testing the effect of Group on each sentence type was conducted. The within-group analysis, comparing L* focused syllables with non-focused counterparts, revealed that native speakers of English showed significant lowering of F0 but no significant change of intensity or duration. As for Koreans, no significant change was found in all acoustic features. According to the between-group analysis, L* focused syllables produced by Americans had lower F0 than Koreans. However, neither the intensity difference nor duration difference was significant between the two groups. Further analysis examining the interaction of Group and Sentence Type showed that the change in F0 produced by Americans was significantly lower in alternative and incredulity questions than that produced by Koreans.
Furthermore, the syllable duration realized by Americans was longer than that realized by Koreans in incredulity questions. Compared to the Korean group, the intensity implemented by the American group was higher in alternative questions but lower in incredulity questions. Implications for the intonation training were also discussed.
