한국 선교사들의 다문화 리더십 향상을 위한 문 화 역량 이해에 관한 소고 (A Study on the Understanding of Cultural Competence for Improving Multicultural Leadership of Korean Missionaries)

초록

2만2천여명의 한국 선교사들은 타문화권에서 사역하고 있다. 그런데선교지에서의 평가는 현지 문화를 존중하지 않고 자문화 중심의 사역을한다는 것이다. 이런 부정적인 평가에 대한 현상을 확인하는 것은 필요하다. 본 고는 다문화에서 사역하는 한국 선교사들의 리더십 향상을 위하여문화 역량에 대한 선교학적 관점을 고찰하였다.
문화역량에 대한 서구 선교계의 연구는 기업, 교육, 의료업계에 비해미약하며 한국 선교계에서는 문화 역량을 주제로 연구한 적이 거의 없기때문에 선교계에서의 많은 연구가 필요하다.
태국과 캄보디아에서 사역하는 한국 선교사들은 포럼과 논문발표를 통하여 현지문화와 언어에 대한 존중이 결여되었고, 현지 교회보다는 한국 선교사 중심의 사역에 대한 자성적 성찰을 하였는데 이것은 한국 선교사들의 문화역량 발전의 필요성을 의미한다.
한국 선교사들의 문화 역량의 한계는 한국인의 정체성과 관련이 되는데, 단일민족국가로 오랫동안 유지된 한국인들은 민족 정체성이 강하여자민족 중심주의와 타민족에 대한 편견이 자연스럽게 형성되었다. 선교사들도 이런 한국정체성을 가지고 선교지에 가게 되므로 우월주의 자세로 타문화와 교회를 대하게 될 가능성이 높은데 문화역량 발전에 장애가된다.
문화 역량 요소는 타문화 인식, 타문화 지식, 타문화 기술로 나눌 수있는데, 선교사들에게 하부요소들이 추가로 요청된다. 타문화 인식에서성육신적인 자세, 타문화 지식에서 문화 우월주의의 위험성과 타문화 교회와 역사에 대한 이해, 타문화 기술에서 교육이 가능한 언어 수준, 편견을 배제한 사역 방법과 타문화의 경험이 한국 사회의 문제를 다른 각도에서 볼 수 있는 능력 등이다.

영어초록

About 22,000 Korean missionaries are working in other cultures.
However, meaningful evaluation in the mission field is that they do not respect the local culture and do their own culture-centered ministry. It is necessary to confirm the phenomenon of these negative evaluations for the development of cultural competence of Korean missionaries. This paper examines the missiological perspective on cultural competence in order to improve the leadership of Korean missionaries working in multiculturalism.
Western missionary studies on cultural competence are much lacking compared to business, education, and medical industries, and since Korean mission society have rarely studied the subject of cultural competence, many studies in mission areas are needed.
Korean missionaries working in Thailand and Cambodia lacked respect for the local culture and language through forums and thesis presentations, and self-reflected on the fact that their ministry was centered on Korean missionaries rather than local churches. This means that cultural competenc development is required. The limits of Korean missionaries’ cultural competence are related to the identity of Koreans. Koreans, who have long been maintained as a homogeneous nation, have a strong ethnic identity, so ethnocentrism and prejudice against other peoples are naturally formed. Missionaries also go to the mission field with this Korean identity, so there is a high possibility that they will treat other cultures and churches with a superior attitude, which is an obstacle to the development of cultural competence.
Cultural competency factors can be divided into cross-cultural attitude, cross-cultural knowledge, and cross-cultural skills. In order to improve the leadership of missionaries working in foreign multicultural situations, more sub-elements are required than multicultural workers in their home countries.
An additional factor in the cross-cultural awareness of missionaries is the attitude of incarnation. An additional component of the missionaries’ cultural knowledge is an understanding of the dangers of cultural supremacy and the history of the cross-cultural church. Additional factors in the missionaries’ cultural skills include acquisition of the language of the mission field at a teachable level, a ministry method that excludes prejudice, and the ability to see problems in Korean society from a different angle due to multicultural experiences.
