초록

Men propose fiction as a tool to recognize reality more clearly. Through this proposed fiction, human beings arrange and understand reality more securely. This fiction, ‘il y a’, is expressed by the form of narrative. The form of fiction is embodied after the form of human life. That is, by the ‘narrative fiction’, reproduced present through the narrative, they understand reality and existence. Therefore, fiction can be defined as “the process of exploring meanings as the object” and “the course of creating the author and a new narrative by fictional description.”
The reason that Yi Cheong-Joon’s works have brought him to the attention is based on ‘the awareness of identity’ or ‘the insight into human nature’ immanent in his literary works, which brings to conclusion how he looks at reality and accept it. Needless to say, he uses different themes and approaches and states various courses of speculation in writing his works. However, the destination he reaches through different ways of thinking is the same at all times.
An Idiot and An Ass and The Gate of Time shows similar observation processes. They are similar in observation by the narrators, but the processes are definitely distinguished. The narrator in An Idiot and An Ass observes at the same position with his exploring object. On the other hand, that of The Gate of Time does at different position from the object. Yi Cheong-Joon is a writer who presents diverse literary approaches, and these two works are the direct textbook examples that prove his writing characteristics. After all, the author’s final destination is the matter of existence or identity. If we could get the correct answer to the question of the insight into human beings, it could be considered that we got to the final destination of our life. But there is no one who succeeded in getting to the end. Therefore, we cannot help trying continuous self-examination. This process of self-examination can be realized by a variety of narrative forms. With a variety of writing styles, Yi Cheong-Joon prefer the ways of exploring existence by driving our lives to the extreme points.
