히브리어 동사문의 양적 구조 분석 방법론 개괄 (Overview of the Quantitative-Structural Analysis of the Verbal Clause in the Biblical Hebrew)

초록

지금까지 성경 히브리어의 어순 연구는 대부분 문장구성소의 질적 순서 관찰에 기반하고 있다. 그러나 이 연구는 1) 일반언어학과 리히터의 정련된 용어에 기반하고 2) BHt5의 문장경계를 받아들이며, 3) 문장의 전체적 관찰에 기반해서 양적 구조 연구 방법론을 새롭게 제시한다.
이 새 방법론은 성경 히브리어를 더 잘 이해할 수 있는 형식적 요소를 제시한다. 필자는 직관적이고 쉬운 토론을 위해서 ‘문장구성소의 양적 증진법칙(PIC)’을 지키는 문장을 크레센도(Crescendo)로 부르겠다. 크레센도 문장은 심리언어학적 이유 때문에, 곧 청자의 이해의 효율성에 이상적인 구조이므로, 통계학적으로 다수를 차지한다.
필자는 이 새 방법으로 창세-2열왕의 모든 동사문을 재검토한 결과, 성경 히브리어 동사문 또한 크레센도로 최적화되어 있음을 발견했다. 산문에서 대략 삼분의 일에서 사분의 일 정도의 문장을 제외하고는 크레센도 구조를 지니고 있다. 하지만 일부 법 본문에선 그 결과가 사뭇 다르다. 압도적 다수의 문장이 데크레센도로 이루어져 있다.
전통적으로 히브리어학에서는 전통적으로 법과 산문의 문장의 형식적 차이가 뚜렷하다고 인식해왔다. 양적 구조 분석 결과도 그런 전통적 이해를 뒷받침한다. 또한 이 분석 결과, 법과 산문의 인지적 잇점에 따른 차이도 드러났다. 곧 산문의 문장은 이해의 효율성에 유리한 문장으로 채워진 반면, 일부 법의 문장은 그렇지 않다.
법과 산문의 이런 뚜렷한 형식적인 차이와 인지적 잇점의 상이점을 고려할 때, 두 장르의 형성과 고대의 낭독관습에 대해 어떤 통시적 시사점을 얻을 수 있다. 산문의 최적화된 구조는 긴 세월 동안 구두 전승을 통해, 곧 수많은 사적/공적 낭독의 자리에서, 매우 다양한 청자와 화자가 관련되어, 수없는 조율(tuning)을 거쳐 자연스레 획득되었을 것이다. 그리고 이런 구조는 텍스트가 고정되기 이전, 구두전승 단계에서 어느 정도 완성되었을 것이다. 한편 성전의 의례와 관련된 종교법의 경우, 그만큼의 다양한 사람이 관련된 다채로운 낭독의 자리를 가질 필요가 상대적으로 적었을 것이다.

영어초록

Until now, the word order studies of BH are mostly based on the observation of the qualitative order of constituent. This study, however, based on the general linguistics, Richter’s well-defined terminologies, the holistic approach and taking the clausal demarcation of the BHt5 over, tries to offer an overview of the new methodological framework of the Quantitative Structure of the clause.
This new methodology, which offers one more formal constraint for the better understanding of BH clause, is correlated to the psycholinguistic interpretation. The PIC (Principle of Increasing Parts)-keeping clauses, which are called Crescrendo for the intuitive and easy-going discussion, become easily the statistical majority because they are optimized to the efficiency of the hearer’s comprehension.
As the result of the re-examination of the verbal clause in Gen-2Kings inspired by this new methodology, it is revealed that BH verbal clauses are also optimized to Crescendo, that is, only one third or one fourth of the clauses are not structured to Crescendo in prose. Some law text, however, has the substantially differenciated relations; the majority is Decrescendo.
This new and stark formal contrast between law and prose confirms the traditional understanding of the formal distinction between them. And it can reveal that they also have significantly distinctive cognitive advantage that the Crescendo-dominating clauses in the prose are ideal to the hear’s effective comprehension while the quantitative structure of the clause in the law is not so.
And these formal and psycholinguistic differences observed and interpreted by the quantitative-structural analysis of the clause could give a possible diachronic hint to the formation and ancient reading practice of the Hebrew text. The optimized quantitative structure of the prose would habe been achieved in very long oral tradition, namely through the countless tunings in innumerable performances of story telling or public reading in the prehistory of the fixed written text. The involvement of the very large kind of speaker and hearer is presupposed. However, the need of such various kind of performances and the huge diversity of the speakers and the hearers of a certain religious laws concerning the rituals in temple would have been restricted.
