선초·중반기 목단문(牧丹文)의 전개와 표현 특징에 관한 고찰 (A Study on the Characteristic of Development and Expression of Peony Design in the early and middle of the Joseon Dynasty)

초록

동양에서는 식물에 특별한 의미를 부여하는 관습이 있어 왔다. 특히 꽃 중에서는 모란(牧丹)을 예로부터 꽃 중의 왕(花中王)으로 여겨왔으며, 부귀영화(富貴榮華)와 아름다움을 상징하여 그림이나 공예품의 장식문양으로 많이 사용되었다.
우리나라에서도 모란문(牧丹文)이 여러 시대를 거쳐 다양한 영역에서 작품화되었다. 통일신라시대를 거처 고려시대까지는 공예품(工藝品)·와당(瓦當) 등에서 자주 표현되다가 조선시대를 거치면서 그 표현범위가 불화·보자기(褓)·흉배(胸背)·도자기·회화작품 등으로 확대되어 다양하게 시문되기 시작하였다. 특히 조선시대에 이르러서는 당시 엄격한 반상사회(班常社會)와 유교정신과는 상반된 금력(金力)이 새로운 가치기준으로 부상하면서 모란문의 선호도가 높게 되었다. 이러한 풍조는 후기에 이르러 서민들에게도 영향을 미쳐 문화·예술에 관심을 갖게 되면서 모란문이 문인화와 회화작품으로 제작하게 되었다.
특히 조선 초·중반기에 이르러서는 모란문의 표현이 다양하게 나타나며 발전하였는데, 유형으로는 불화 · 초상화 속의 흉배·어보(御寶) 속의 보자기·도자기 등에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 먼저 종교적 이념을 표현한 불화 속의 모란문은 귀족·왕족계층의 취향에 맞는 화려하고 섬세한 양식의 고려시대 불화와 달리 일반 민중의 취향에 맞게 제작되었으며, 대표작으로 약사삼존도(藥師三尊圖)·아미타오존도(阿彌陀五尊圖)·지장시왕도(地藏十王圖)·감로도(甘露圖) 등이 있다. 약사삼존도와 감로도의 경우 단상 위·아래에 다양한 재물들과 함께 화병에 꽂혀지거나, 단상을 장식적 요소로 꾸미기 위해서 새겨 넣었으며, 아미타오존도와 지장시왕도의 경우 부처님의 법의(法衣)·가사(袈裟) 주변에 패턴형식으로 표현되었다. 또한 초상화 흉배 속의 모란문의 경우 문관과 무관이 각각 다른 상징적인 문양들을 넣어 장식적인 효과 이외에도 계급사회의 구별을 확실하게 보여주고 있다.
이러한 영향은 왕실문화의 전유물인 어보를 보관하는 보자기에서도 살펴 볼 수 있다. 당시 어보를 포장하는 보자기에 표현된 모란꽃은 단독으로 표현된 경우와 다른 꽃들과 혼합하여 표현되는 경우가 있는데 국가의 보배인 만큼 보자기 속의 모란꽃은 크고 화사하게 표현되어 그 위용을 드러내고 있다. 또한 도자기의 경우 종류와 기법에 따라 표현양식들을 달리하고 있는데, 분청사기의 경우에는 선을 중심으로 시원스럽고 생략된 형태뿐만 아니라 추상적인 형태로 표현되어 있으며, 백자의 경우 회화작품을 보듯 자유분방함과 동시에 간결한 형태로 묘사되었다.
따라서 본 논고에서는 이와 같이 조선 초·중반기에 형성된 모란문의 전개양상과 표현의 특징을 규명하여 한국 모란문의 정체성을 찾고자 하였다.

영어초록

In East, there has been a custom of giving special meanings to plant. Especially, peony was called as the king of flowers and was used in paintings and ornament pattern of artistic handicrafts symbolizing wealth, prosperity and beauty.
In Korea, peony design was used in various field of art throughout the ages. From Unified Silla period to Goryeo dynasty, peony design was showed often in artistic handicrafts · roofend tile and through Joseon dynasty, range of expression was extended to the painting of the Buddha·cloth·rank badge·pottery·art painting and started to be used variously.
Especially in Joseon dynasty, preference of peony design was high while money power which is contrary to the strict high and the low society and spirit of the Confucianism rose to the new standard of value. In the late of Joseon dynasty, this trend also influenced common people and peony design was used in literary and art paintings as people started to get interested in culture · art.
Especially in the early·middle Joseon dynasty, peony design started to show in various field and the type of it can be found in the painting of the Budhha, rank badge in portrait, cloth in the royal seal and pottery. Especially, peony design shown in the painting of the Buddha which is expressing religious ideology was made to ordinary people’s taste unlike the painting of the Buddha of Goryeo dynasty which is fancy and delicate style of noble and royal class. There are painting of Yaksa Buddha Triad·five Amitabha· Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Ten Underworld Kings·Gamrodo in major works of it.
Painting of Yaksa Buddha Triad and Gamrodo were put in the flower vase with various treasure on and under the podium and carved in the podium for decoration. Painting of Amitabha and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Ten Underworld Kings were expressed in the form of pattern painting around the sacerdotal robe of the Buddha and monk. Also, peony design in the rank badge in portrait, pattern of military officers and civil servants are different and it shows not only decorative effect but also hierarchical society apparently.
These effect reached to the culture of royal family and therefore it can be seen in the cloth keeping the royal seal. Peony that shown in the cloth keeping the royal seal at that time was expressed alone or with other flowers and peony in the cloth also big and gorgeous as it is a national treasure.
Also, pottery differs forms of expression depending on the type and technique and in case of a grayish-blue-powdered celadon, it is expressed in the big, well-defined and omitted form centered on the line and also abstract form, and in case of white porcelain, it is described in the form of free and concise at the same time as art painting.
Therefore in this paper, I tried to look for the identity of Korean peony design investigating the feature of development and expression of peony design formed in the early·middle of the Joseon dynasty.
