초록

삼언에는 상인이 주요 인물로 등장하는 작품이 다수 수록되어 있다. 상인은 주요 인물로 작품에 등장하여 자기가 장사하러 떠난 동안 바람피운 아내와 이혼했다가 나중에 재결합하는 남편 역할, 사랑하는 여인을 위해 돈을 모으는 기름 장수 역할, 재산을 모으기 위해 불철주야 노력하는 소상공인 역할, 타인을 위해 부를 축적해주는 충직한 하인 역할 등을 맡는다.
이 글의 목적은 삼언에 등장하는 상인 인물이 얼마나 다양하며, 그들이 얼마나 다양한 지역에서 활동하고, 얼마나 다양한 품목을 취급하는지, 또 얼마나 다양한 형태로 상업 활동을 전개하는지를 밝혀내는 데 있지 않다. 이 글은 삼언 작품을 당시 사회상을 밝혀내는 자료로 읽어내고자 하지는 않는다.
이 글의 목적은 삼언의 작가가 작품의 주요 등장인물의 직업을 상인으로 설정했다면, 삼언이 창작되었을 당시 상인이란 직업인의 어떤 속성이 작가의 어떤 창작 의도를 구현하는 데 가장 잘 맞아떨어졌는지를 밝히는 데 있다. 삼언의 작가가 창작 의도를 구현해내기 위해 상인을 등장인물로 설정했을 때 그 등장인물이 어떤 사건들을 겪게 되며, 작가는 또 그 사건들을 어떤 식으로 연결해내는지를 밝혀내는 것이 이 글의 두 번째 목적이다.
이 두 개의 목적을 달성하기 위해 이 글은 <장흥가가 진주적삼을 다시 찾다>, <기름 장수가 최고 기녀를 독차지하다>, <시윤택이 탄궐에서 친구를 만나다>, <서 씨네 늙은 하인이 분연히 일어나 집안의 재물을 이루다> 이렇게 네 작품을 주 대상으로 삼아 분석을 시도했고 더 나아가 삼언의 다른 작품들을 폭넓게 예증하면서 논의를 전개했다.
이상의 논의 결과, 삼언의 작가는 상인의 상업 활동 자체에 관심을 기울이기보다는 상인이 상업 활동으로 말미암아 겪는 인간적 고뇌와 갈등, 선행과 악행, 충성과 의리 그리고 그에 따른 보답을 보여주는 것에 훨씬 큰 관심을 기울였음이 밝혀졌다. 삼언에는 상인이 주요 인물로 등장하는 작품이 다수 수록되어 있기는 하나 상업 활동 자체를 상세하게 묘사해낸 작품은 거의 보이지 않는다. 그 작품들에 등장하는 상인은 상인의 직업적 속성을 충실히 구현한 인물이 아니라 당시 사회에서 인간이라면 모름지기 갖춰야 한다고 인정되었던 보편적 품성을 구현한 인물이다.
삼언에 수록된 다수의 상인 인물 소설은 당시에 상업을 포함한 경제활동이 인간사회의 주요 요소임을 자각하기 시작하였음을 보여주는 징표임이 분명하다. 그러나 그 상인이 소설 작품에서 제기되는 갈등과 위기를 해결하는 주체로 묘사되지 않는 것은 상인이 당시 사회의 제문제를 해결하는 주체로 인정받는 단계로는 나아가지 못했음을 보여주는 징표이기도 하다.

영어초록

Sanyan contains many works in which the merchant appears as the main character. The merchant who appears in the work as the main character, takes on the role of a husband who divorces and later reunites with his wife whom he cheated on while he was away for business, the role of an oil peddler who collects money for the woman he loves, the role of a small business owner who works tirelessly to accumulate wealth; such as the role of a loyal servant the who accumulates wealth for his mistress.
The purpose of this article is not to reveal how diverse the merchant figures appearing in Sanyan are, how many different items they handle, and how many different forms of commercial activity they carry out. This article does not intend to read Sanyan's works as data that reveals the social conditions of the time.
The purpose of this article is to reveal what attributes of a merchant at the time Sanyan's work was best suited to realizing the author's writing intentions, if the writer of Sanyan set the occupation of the main characters in the work as a merchant. The second purpose of this article is to find out what events the character experiences when the writer of Sanyan sets a merchant as a character to realize his creative intention, and how the writer connects those events.
To achieve these two goals, I tried to analyze these four works as main subjects, <Jiang Xingge Reencounters His Pearl Shirt>, <The Oil- Peddler Wins the Queen of Flowers>, <Shi Runze Encounters a Friend at Tanque>, and <In Righteous Wrath, Old Servant Xu Builds Up a Family Fortune>, and furthermore, I developed a discussion by demonstrating Sanyan's other works extensively.
As a result of the above discussion, I could make a tentative conclusion that Sanyan's writer was much more interested in showing the human agony and conflict, good and evil deeds, loyalty and obligation, and the rewards that a merchant suffers from commercial activities, rather than paying attention to the merchant's commercial activity itself. Although there are many works in which the merchant appears as the main character in Sanyan, there are few works that describe the commercial activities in detail. The merchant appearing in those works is not a person who faithfully embodies the professional attributes of a merchant, but a person who embodies the universal character that was recognized as essential to a human being in the society at the time.
It is clear that the many works of merchant characters included in Sanyan are a sign that at that time, people began to realize that economic activities, including commerce, were the main elements of human society. However, the fact that the merchant is not portrayed as the main agent in resolving the conflicts and crises raised in the work is also a sign that the merchant has not progressed to the stage where he is recognized as the agent to solve the problems of society at that time.
