사회적 존재와 사회관계 표현으로서의 몸·춤·풍물 (Body, Dance and Pungmul as Expressions of Social Being and Social Relation)

초록

풍물은 복합적 예술형태로서 그 안에 이를 수행하는 사람들의 몸동작, 춤, 음악, 의례적 행위 등을 포함하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 몸동작, 춤, 그리고 이것들을 포괄하는 풍물의 전체적 진행을 다룬다. 이들의 형식적이고 외형적인 사실 및 과정이 서술되어 있다. 또한 이것들을 통해 표현되는 사람들의 사회적 존재 및 사회관계가 해석되어 있다.
본 논문은 두 곳 사례를 중심으로 한 민족지(ethnography)적 연구이다. 2장은 1980년대 초 충남 부여군 초촌면 추양리에서 수집한 사례를 다루었다. 몸, 춤, 풍물을 작동시켰던 과거의 두레 관행이 주요 대상이다. 1980년대 조사 당시 제보자들이 기억했던 1940년경의 관행이다. 두레 관행 속에서 나타난 농민의 사회적 존재 표현을 다루었다. 농민들이 공유한 특유의 관행적 행위들을 통해 노동 효율성을 넘어 향유의 장(場)을 전개하고, 농민집단 간의 위세 과시와 소통을 추구하는 과정들에서 그들의 사회적 존재 표현이 나타난다.
3장은 2007년부터 현재까지 전남 해남군에서 활동하는 연희자들과의 비공식적 면담과 현장 관찰을 통해 수집한 사례를 다루었다. 현장에서 사람들이 연행을 계획하고, 수행하고, 의미를 부여하고, 연행을 통해 지역사회 연대를 새롭게 형성하려는 시도가 나타나는 사례이다. 예를 들어 해남 연희자들은 과거 미황사 연희자들의 탁발(托鉢)과 바다에서의 죽음이라는 역사적 사건을 재해석한다. 이에 근거하여 지역방문을 새롭게 실행한다. 또한 풍물 연희에 담긴 통과의례를 재해석하여 지역방문과 교류를 의미화하고, 풍물 연희자의 사회적 존재의 의미와 역할을 재해석한다. 이들은 이러한 상징적 자원들을 가동하여 해남, 완도의 연안과 도서를 권역으로 하는 새로운 지역교류의 세계를 그린다. 이 두 사례는 몸, 춤, 풍물이 사회를 표현할 것이라는 일반적 가정을 넘어 구체적으로 어떤 내용을 어떻게 표현하고 있는가를 입증하고 있다.
두 사례 모두에 있어 행위자의 관점이 중요하게 작용하고 있다. 추양리의 사례는 '몸 기술들' 혹은 몸 쓰임이라는 관행적 사실 속에 자기 존재와 생활과 사회에 대한 농민들의 관점이 들어 있다 말할 수 있다. 해남의 경우에는 행위자들이 새롭게 몸, 춤, 풍물 등의 의미를 규정하거나 재해석하면서 그들의 관점과 의도를 뚜렷하게 부여하고 있다.
이상의 사례들은 춤의 문화연구에 시사점을 준다. 춤을 추는 것은 인간적인 행위이다. 춤의 문화연구는 이 말이 명제에 그치지 않고 현실 속에서 어떻게 구현되고 있는가를 보여주는 작업이다. 그 작업은 춤의 구체적인 형식적, 외현적 사실들과 그 춤을 추고 있는 인간 존재를 파악하는 일이다. 춤의 형식적, 외현적 사실들이 체현하고 있는 인간 존재의 의미, 사회적 존재의 의미를 찾는 일이다. 또한 사람들이 자신들이 전승해 오고 창출해 온 사회적 존재의 의미들에 따라 춤의 형식적, 외현적 사실들을 재구성하고 재정의하는 문화과정을 찾는 일이다. 추양리 두레 풍물, 해남의 풍물 진법군고 그리고 이들을 통해 자신의 사회적 존재와 사회관계를 표현하고 이들에 사회에 대한 원망(願望)을 실었던 사람들이 춤 문화연구의 길을 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

Pungmul has existed as the complex of body movement, dance, music and ritual behaviors. The body movement, dance and the whole performing process of pungmul which include these bodily expressions, are main objects of this paper. The formal, expressive facts and processes of these objects are described. Peoples’ social beings and social relations manifested through these objects.
This work is an ethnography based on the case studies of two places in Korea. The chapter two is the result of a case study in the village Chuyang-ri, Buyeo-gun county, Chuncheongnam-do province. The field study was performed in the 1980s. But the materials are on the facts in 1940s. They are from the elders’ remember. Dure, the representative communal laboring practice in Korea, is the principal object of description and interpretation in chapter two. Dure was the vehicle of body, dance and pungmul. Peasants’ social beings were expressed in the objects operated by the Dure practice. The expressions were embedded in their unique performing behaviors that tell the transcendence beyond the rational efficiency of laboring calculation. The behaviors were quite habitual and shared ones in the peasant society which managed the Dure practice. The peasants appreciated these behaviors. Also the expressions were embedded in their behavioral manifestation of prestige, in their quests for communication among the laboring classes.
The chapter three is the result of informal interviews and participant observations among the pungmul performers who live in Haenam-gun county, Jeollanam-do province. The fieldwork is still ongoing since 2007. This chapter tells the performers’ plans, executions, invests of meanings and envisions of new local alliances. The performers reinterpret their local ancestors’ performing visits, religious mendicancy and accidental death on the marine way to an island. Based on the new notions about the historical facts they began new enterprise of local visits. They reinterpret spatial rites of passage in Pulmul investing their envisioned meanings of local visits, alliances and interchanges. Harnessing these symbolic capitals they envision the new local alliances encompassing coasts in Haenam-gun county and islands in Wando county. The two cases in this paper show the concrete demonstration of the social expressions. That is, the expressions of social beings and social relations through the performance of body, dance and pungmul.
In both cases actors’ point of view has crucial function. In the case of Chuyang-ri, the ‘habitus’ or ‘techniques of the body’ ‘embed the peasants’ notions on their existence, lives and societies. In the case of Haenam, the performers’ points of view and intentions overtly invest the body, dance and pungmul, the meanings of which have been redefined or reinterpreted.
These cases illuminate some ways of study. That is, they illuminate the study on the culture of dance. Dance is a human behavior. The study on the culture of dance means the manifestation of this proposition with the concrete realization in the actual living world. This work requires the quest for the meanings of human being, social beings embodied in the concrete formal and expressive facts of dance. Also it requires the quest for the cultural processes of reconstruction and redefinition of the formal, expressive facts which are operated by the people who have transmitted, created the meanings of social beings. Pungmul in Dure practice of Chuyang-ri and the people in these societies, who had expressed themselves by these objects, who have invested these objects with the envisions, illuminate the ways of study.
