청각장애인 수강보조 모바일 앱을 위한 교사용 인터페이스 개발 (The Instructor Interface Development of a Lecture Taking Mobile Application for Hearing Impaired Students)

초록

배경 및 목적: 속기나 수화통역의 불충분한 서비스로 인하여 청각장애인은 교육에 있어서 동등한 기회를 갖고 있지 않다. 통합 교육 환경에서 교사, 청각장애학생, 그리고 건청 학생들 사이의 의사소통 모델을 설계하고, 이를 바탕으로 청각장애인을 위한 수강보조앱(Park, 2016)이 개발되었다. 수강보조 앱은 교사가 자신의 단말기를 수업 시간 내내 들고 있어야 하는 불편함이 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 통합교육환경에서 구성원 사이의 의사소통 형식을 모두 지원하면서, 교사가 편리하게 사용할 수 있는 교사용 인터페이스를 개발하는 것이다. 방법: 먼저 수강보조 앱의 의사소통 모델을 분석하고, 사용하기 편리한 교사용 인터페이스의 요구사항을 도출하였다. 기존의 수강보조 앱을 통한 의사소통 모델을 교사용 인터페이스를 포함하는 의사소통 모델로 확장하고, 교사용 인터페이스를 설계하였다. 결과: 개발한 인터페이스는 교사들이 익숙한 마이크 형태로 3D프린터로 만들었으며, 블루투스 마이크와 수강보조 앱의 기능을 활성 시킬 수 있는 기능 버튼으로 구성된다. 또한, 충분히 큰 강의실에서도 교사용 기기를 통한 청각장애 학생의 질문이나 답변을 음성합성으로 다른 학생들이 잘 들을 수 있도록 라즈베리 파이 3 를 이용하여 개발한 음성 증폭기를 추가하였다. 논의 및 결론: 본 연구에서 개발한 교사용 인터페이스를 채용한 수강보조 앱은 교사의 편리를 재고하여, 청각장애학생의 교육 기회를 증진할 것으로 기대한다. 또한, 다양한 강연회 등에서 청각장애인의 참여가 증가할 수 있다.

Background and Objectives: Due to the lack of stenography and sign-language interpretation services, deaf and hard-of-hearing people have limited opportunities in education. Based on the rapid growth of speech technology, there are many mobile applications to help face-to-face communication between hard-of-hearing people and their hearing communication partners, although face-to-face communication applications fail to support some communications that arise in inclusive classroom situations. For example, the question of a deaf student to the instructor should also be heard by the hearing students in the classroom. There is a lecture-taking mobile application (Park, 2016) for hard-of-hearing students to support all possible communication types in inclusive settings. However the application is uncomfortable for the instructor to use, since the instructor is required to hold the mobile device near his or her mouth during the entire lecture. The purpose of this study is to develop an interface hardware that is comfortable for the instructor, and supports all possible communication types between the deaf student and others, including the instructor and the hearing students in the same classroom. Method: We analyzed the communication model of the lecture-taking mobile application, and extracted the requirements of the comfortable instructor’s interface. We designed the interface and extended the communication model with the interface. Results: The new interface has the shape of a microphone, which is very familiar to instructors. It consists of a blue-tooth microphone and function buttons to support communication between the deaf student and the others in the same classroom. In order to increase the speech volume for all the students to hear, especially in large classes, we suggested to include a sound amplifier of the speech signal from the mobile device. The instructor’s interface was implemented using two blue-tooth microphones. We created a mock- up of the interface using a 3D printer. The raspberry PI 3 was used to implement the sound amplifier. Conclusion: The lecture-taking mobile application with the developed instructor’s interface made the instructors feel comfortable in their inclusive classes with hard-of-hearing students. This device contributes to the improvement of the quality of life for hard-of-hearing individuals, and we expect that it will help hard-of-hearing people to have the same opportunity in education as hearing people.
