초록

현대중국학술계의 탄생을 알린 호적(胡適)의 『중국철학사대강(中國哲學史大綱)』 상권(卷上)은 중국전통학문세계가 현대로 전환했음을 알린 저작이었다. 호적이 북경대 교수로 부임하며 깃발을 높이 들었던 신문학, 신청년, 신학문, 심지어 5･4운동과 신문화운동 같은 개혁의 목소리는 당시 전통 학술계와 끊임없는 사상적 충돌을 가져왔을 뿐만 아니라 1920~30년대 보수파와의 다양한 논전 역시 겪게 된다. 1920~30년대 호적은 유럽과 미국학술교육체계를 바탕으로 중국학술계와 교육체계를 새롭게 구성하는데 가장 큰 영향력을 행사하면서 당시 일종의 「문화권력」지위를 가지고 있었기 때문에 보수파와의 논전과 다양한 충돌 역시 이에 대한 반발이었을 수 있음에 주목해보면 이것이 일종의 담론투쟁일 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 또한 호적은 일관되게 개인주의와 자유주의를 주장하면서 중국과 대만의 공산당과 국민당 독재 통치기간 동안 특히 1980년대까지도 다양한 비판과 폄하운동을 겪기도 하였다. 이러한 호적의 사상과 저작들이 가지는 상징성 때문에 『중국철학사대강(상권)』의 시대적 의미를 찾아보는 것이야 말로 중국현대사상과 학술계의 모습을 온전히 이해하는데 가장 중요한 그리고 적절한 연구 주제임은 의심의 여지가 없을 것이다. 당시 모든 학술계가 싫든 좋든 언급할 수밖에 없던 저작이자 기존의 연구 태도와 방법을 일거에 현대적 서구적 연구체제로 바꾸어 버린 시대적 상징의의는 그 어떤 저작도 따라갈 수 없기 때문이다. 호적은 옳고 그름이 중요한 것이 아니라 용기 있게 자신이 연구한 바를 솔직 담백하게 이야기 할 수 있는 연구를 주장했을 뿐만 아니라 그 연구과정이 사회와 개인에게 가져다주는 다양한 상호 영향이 중요하다고 강조했다. 이러한 상호작용과 이에 대한 중시가 바로 호적의 저작이 자유주의 상징으로서 여전히 중국에서 생명력을 가질 수 있는 중요한 이유일 것이다. 호적의 『중국철학사대강(상권)』이 1919년에 출간되었으니 이제 100년의 시간이 지났다. 과연 현재 중국학술계는 얼마나 솔직히 연구하고 자신들의 중국사회와 다양한 상호 영향에 주목하고 있을까? 제도가 생긴 이후에 멈출 줄 알아야 비로소 위태롭지 않다고 했다. 중국의 현재는 과연 어디쯤 있을까? 1919년 5･4 운동 역시 이 100년을 바라보고 있다. 지금 중국에선 영원한 자유주의자 호적의 평가와 연구는 과연 어떤 시대적 의미를 가지고 있을까? 우리가 호적의 저작에 여전히 주목해야 하는 이유가 여기에 있겠다.

Hu Shih's “An Outline of The Chinese Philosophy" was the paradigm shifting and revolutionary text to lead the new era to transform traditional Chinese academia into one of accepting the modern western academic standards, also announcing the birth of Chinese Philosophy History as an academic discipline. When 26 years old Hu Shih was appointed as a professor of the Beijing University at 1917, raised the banner of New Literature, New Youth and New Academia, he eventually was becoming one of the main promoters and leaders of the May Fourth Movement and the New Culture Movement. During 1920 to 1930, Hu Shih was one of the most significant cultural, academic leaders and powers, but also a target who was fiercely attacked by Chinese modern conservatives. Because Hu Shih was the promoter of the ideal “Democracy and Science” and pursued “Individualism” and “Liberalism” in the politic area, he was constantly denounced and attacked by various criticisms and defamation campaigns under the ruling of Kuomintang or Communist Party's dictatorship respectfully in mainland China and Taiwan until the 1980s. As Hu Shih’s ideology and writings have such symbolic meaning, there is no doubt that it is one of the most important and relevant research topics to study on the Hu Shih’s “An Outline of The Chinese Philosophy" to fully understand the modern Chinese philosophy academic discipline. During that time, related all academic field had no choice but to mention about Hu Shih’s “An Outline of The Chinese Philosophy" as it changed the existing traditional research method into the modernized western research system at once and no other works could keep up with the symbolic meaning that his work had. Hu Shih's “An Outline of The Chinese Philosophy" was published in 1919 and his writings always emphasized positive influences on the individuals and societies. His works addressed that it is important to propose the research to speak openly, frankly and freely regardless whether it is right or wrong, only if with patience and sincerity which he always emphasized his research method like “Bold Hypothesis and Careful Verification". As Hu Shih quoted Lao Zi, after the establishment of the system “When they know to rest in it, they can be free from all risk of failure and error”, if we looked inside China after the establishment of the Communist Party and PRC's extraordinary economic developments and its achievements, now where China rested in it now! What Hu Shih had achieved in his academic, cultural and political life was the tools for social impact and reformation for the higher good. We should understand that the importance of the various interactions and communications, how these processes bring to individuals, researchers, and societies positive impacts for the higher good, at the same time we should notice what kind of impacts of these processes will bring to the audience and further future studies. That's why we still need to review Hu Shih's astonishing academic works, through microscopic research we could grasp two related and progressed sibling works, which were “The Development of The Logical Method in Ancient China" and “An Outline of The Chinese Philosophy", real meaning of social and academic impact on the May Fourth Movement and New Culture Movement.
