관용에 대한 (생물학적) 접근: 공감의 은유적 맵핑 (An (Biological) Approach to Toleration ―On the Metaphorical Mapping of Empathy)

초록

관용에 대한 규범적 지형도를 논증하는 것은 어려운(elusive) 것 같다. 관용은 정의나 책임의 원리만큼 명확하지 않다. 16-7세기 자유주의적 관용의 역사적 배경은 종교분쟁을 종식시키기 위한 일종의 사회생물학적 처방전 내지 자기보존의 정치적 선회였다.
이 글은 전통적인 객관주의에 따른 이성우위의 사유방식을 쫓아가지 않고, 현대 인지과학이 시사하는 체화된 마음(embodied mind)의 문제를 활용하여 관용에 접근하는 방법을 찾는다. 우선 감성우위의 도덕관념을 통해 관용에 접근한다. 감정에 대한 略史와 현대 인지과학에 의지하여 공감(empathy), 즉 ‘감정이입이라는 도덕’관념을 관용의 기초로 삼는다. 공감을 담당하는 [거울뉴런]의 생물학적 뇌기능에 대한 은유적 맵핑(cross-domains-mapping)을 통해 관용의 보편적 규범성을 탐색한다. [역지사지], 즉 [입장 바꿔 생각하기]라는 은유는 규범적으로 [소극적 황금률]에 머무는 것이 아니라, 체험주의 입장에서 [적극적 황금률]을 제시할 여지를 보여준다. 둘째, 통계학이나 약학 등 다른 학문분야에서 사용되는 toleration과 tolerance의 어원적 의미에 착안하여, [항생제], [오차범위 내의 허용수치] 등의 은유적 맵핑을 통해 관용의 한계와 규범적 정당화의 여지를 찾는다. 이러한 접근은 결국 관용을 통해 인간 삶의 부족이나 결핍, 불확실성 등 생물학적 여건을 수용하는 체화된 마음의 이론으로 나타난다. 관용이 바로 환경에 적응된 인간의 마음이라고 할 수 있다. 곧 체화된 마음이 관용이라고 할 수 있다. 이 글에서 필자는 관용에 대한 접근이 어려운 이유를 바로 이 체화된 인간의 부족현상에서 찾는다.

영어초록

To contour a normative map of toleration as a legal principle seems to be elusive. Toleration is not as certain as justice and responsibility in theory. In the course of the sixteenth and seventeenth century, the historical background of liberal toleration was political turning to survive and a kind of social biological prescription.
I suppose that toleration depends on an embodied mind. I claim toleration is a metaphorical product. My approach to toleration is based on experientialism of J. Lakoff & M Johnson. To catch toleration in theory, I try two cross-domains mapping. One is the metaphorical mapping based on biology and brain-science, which are source-domains. This brain science shows that mirror-neurons in brain perform a function of empathy. I argue that the empathic function of mirror-neurons means a source of universal normativity as justification. The other is the mapping from etymologic usages of toleration and tolerance in the field of statistics and pharmacy etc. My etymological mapping is to reveal the limit of toleration and zero-toleration. Toleration as an embodied mind is not enough to be justified by empathy. What toleration is embodied in mind means the metaphor to stem from an interaction with cultural environment. I give a few historical and literary examples of J. Locke, Calvin and G.E. Lessing’s Nathan Der Weise, etc.
My mapping of tolerance in the latter means the metaphor, [the limit of permission within an error range]. Also toleration means [antibiotic] in pharmacy, which is the metaphor of harm. Their metaphors mean [an acceptance of riskiness] for coexistence.
I focus on empathy as an example of Golden Rule. Empathy is the necessary requirement for legal justication. [If I were you~], I sympathize with your pain and misfortune. If we accept empathy theory, the morality of empathy is not merely negative Golden Rule. We have to get to the toleration as positive Golden Rule. Then toleration arrives at one of our ‘thick’ ethical concepts such as what Bernard Williams called. As brain science and experientialism show to us, we find out if toleration implies empathy from which it get to a responsibility of Golden Rule. Toleration requires to make up a lack of human existence by empathy.
