초록

이 글은 1929년 식민지 도시 경성에서 열린 조선박람회 기간 동안, 경성의 교통망이 어떻게 활용되었는지를 살펴본 것이다. 조선총독부는 市政20년을 기념하는 박람회에서 성공적인 개최를 위해 최대한 많은 관람객을 동원하려고 하였다.
이를 위해 조선을 넘어 일본과 만주 등지에 흩어져 있는 관람객들을 박람회장으로 집합시키는 것은 중요한 문제였다. 이때 활용된 것이 조선의 간선철도와 경성의 시내교통인 전차였다.
조선박람회는 9월 12일부터 10월 31일까지 50일 동안 총독부 신청사 뒤편의경복궁과 신무문 밖 부지 10만 평에 마련되었다. 이 기간 동안 박람회를 관람한인원은 유료 입장자만 98만 명으로 집계되었다. 이들 중 대다수는 철도를 이용하여 경성으로 이동했는데, 조선총독부 철도국은 관람객들이 단기간에 집중될 것을 우려하여 박람회 개최에 앞서 <조선박람회관람단체수송신청서>를 접수받았다. 각 지역에서 단체관람객을 모집한 협찬회가 소속 부청과 군청, 도청과 승차역에 신청서를 제출하였고, 이를 통해 철도국은 단체관람객의 철도편을 통제할수 있었다. 박람회 시찰단들은 주로 밤기차를 타고 경성에 도착하였다. 이렇게밤기차가 활용된 것은 초행길에 길 찾기가 좋고, 경제적으로도 유익하기 때문이었다. 이때 가장 많은 관람객이 모인 철도역은 경인선과 경부선, 경의선과 호남선 등이 만나는 경성역이었다.
당시 경성에는 전차와 부영버스가 운행하고 있었지만 주된 시내교통은 전차였다. 경성전기(주)는 전차의 박람회 노선을 편성하여 철도역과 박람회장을 연결하였다. 박람회 개최에 앞서 경복궁 주변으로 전차궤도가 신설되고 복선화되는 등 전차의 도심노선도 이때 완성되었다.
박람회 관람을 위해 상경한 사람들은 최소 3일에서 4일을 경성에서 보냈다. 이들은 하루 정도 박람회장을 둘러보고 경성관광에 나섰다. 총독부 철도국은 관람객을 대상으로 조선의 역사와 문화를 감상하면서 일본의 식민통치가 이룬 성과를 확인하는 관광코스를 개발하였다. 이와 달리 『조선박람회안내』에는 옛 조선의문화 유적을 기억하며 식민지가 된 조선의 변화상을 살펴보는 관광코스가 제시되었다. 교외에서는 도성 밖의 청량리와 왕십리, 마포, 양화진 등이 추천 명소로꼽혔다. 이렇게 경성관광과 교외로의 이동은 시내교통인 전차를 중심으로 이루어졌고, 부영버스와 경인버스, 대절자동차, (당인리행) 철도 등도 함께 활용되었다.
1929년 조선박람회는 일본과 만주 등에서도 관람객이 동원된 대규모 이벤트였다. 이미 간선철도망을 갖춘 조선철도는 박람회 기간 동안 경성으로 관람객들을집중시켰고, 시내교통인 전차도 관람객들을 박람회장으로 이동시켰다. 이렇게박람회에 활용된 철도교통과 시내교통은 경성의 철도역에서 연계되었다.

This research investigated how the traffic network of Gyeongseong was used during the period of the Chosun Exhibition held in the colonized city in 1929. The Japanese Government- General of Korea made an effort to attract as many visitors as possible for the success of the exhibition marking the 20th anniversary of the administration. It was essential to gather people in Chosun as well as Japan and Manchuria to the exhibition venue. For this, the main railways across the country and trams, the municipal transportation of Gyeongseong, were employed.
The Chosun Exhibition was held for 50 days from Sep 12 to Oct 31 in the site of about 330,000 m2 in Gyeongbokgung Palace and outside Shinmu-mun behind the new building of the Japanese Government-General of Korea. The number of visitors during the period was tallied at 980,000. Most of them went to Gyeongseong by train; worrying that a lot of people would rush in a short time, the Railway Bureau of the Japanese Government- General of Korea received “Applications for group visits to the Chosun Exhibition” before the exhibition. The Sponsorship Association recruited group visitors from several regions and submitted the applications to the affiliated ministry, county office, provincial office and train stations, which enabled the Railway Bureau to control the rail service for group visitors. The exhibition inspection teams mostly took night trains to Gyeongseong. This is because, it was easy to navigate on their first trip and economically beneficial. The most crowded station was Gyeongseong Station where Gyeongin Line, Gyeongbu Line, Gyeon-gui Line, and Honam Line met.
Although there were trams and municipalized buses running in Gyeongseong back then, trams were the major transport means. Gyeongseong Electricity Co., Ltd. organized trams routes for the exhibition to connect railway stations and the exhibition venue. Before holding the exhibition, the tram routes downtown were completed including new and double tracks around Gyeongbokgung Palace.
Those who came to Gyeongseong to see the exhibition spent at least 3-4 days in the city. They looked around the exhibition venue for about a day and went on a Gyeongseong tour. The Railway Bureau of the Japanese Government-General of Korea developed a tour course for visitors to appreciate the history and culture of Chosun and see the successful achievement of the Japanese colonialism. On the other hand, “Guide to the Chosun Exhibition” suggested another tour course to look around the colonized country with the cultural ruins of the old Chosun. Tourist attractions in the suburb included Cheongnyangni, Wangsimni, Mapo, and Yanghwajin outside the capital city. The municipal transportation, trams, as well as municipalized buses, Gyeongin bus, hired cars, and (bound for Danginri) railway facilitated Gyeongseong tours and traffic to the suburb.
The Chosun Exhibition in 1929 was a huge event participated by people from Japan and Manchuria. The railway of Chosun had already been completed with the main railway network and gathered audience into Gyeongseong during the exhibition, and the municipal transportation, trams, also helped the visitors arrive at the exhibition venue. Such rail and municipal transports were connected at railway stations in Gyeongseong.
