초록

This paper examines Chinese American writer Ha Jin's representation of Chinese immigrants' lives in A Good Fall—a collection of 12 short stories—giving particular attention to the ways in which the formation of immigrants' transnational identities is characterized. Jin describes diverse aspects of ‘fallen’ lives of Chinese people in the United States ethically, figuratively, and literally. We can hardly find heroic lives of great achievements in A Good Fall. Instead, most of the Chinese immigrants in A Good Fall undergo lives of struggle at the bottom and margin of the society where they want to settle down. The challenges they face are not only difficulties in their new land but also burdens from their old land. Despite these unfavorable and hostile conditions in their new land of hope, they try hard to keep their boats of lives floating instead of being completely sunken. This is how they show their spirit of resilience. This is also how a place of fall turns into a place of resilience. They become active subjects rather than passive objects in their lives of transnational migration. In this process of reshaping their lives here and now dealing with all burdens from over there and in the past, their transnational identities are being formed and they gradually become Chinese Americans. Jin depicts the sometimes turbulent but always fluid and ongoing process of acculturation in A Good Fall. This is an (un)learning process of becoming Chinese American.
