초록

Under the all-out war policy, travel essays contributed to reinforcing the idea of the Greater Asia by vividly describing the imaginary territory of the imperialistic state. Travel essays about China that was newly occupied by the imperialistic Japan re-enacted the landscapes of Shanghai, Beijing and Nanjing, and dictated the feat and the prowess of the imperial military force. Those essays imitated those of the Japanese Empire, but failed on perfect reenactment, demonstrating inherent differences in identity from the Japanese Empire. In particular, a trip to the Empire under Fascism at the end of the Japanese Colonial era when a state, not a nation, was emphasized was a process of becoming a subject of the Japanese Empire. The travel essays of the time presented the Empire's subjects who swore their allegiance to the Empire and overly expresses their emotions. Travel essays in the 1940s were written in an attempt to close the gap between the Empire and its subjects, or, more blatantly, to incorporate Joseon and Japanese people. Therefore, travel journals of the time described a process of creating a new term of the "World Co-Prosperity Sphere“ through romantic appropriation of and illusion about the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere." This was then disguised and distributed as a pose or a rationalized identity.
