유적 경관의 디지털 재현과 활용방향 - 순천 대곡리 유적을 중심으로 - (Digital Reconstruction and Utilization Strategies for Archaeological Landscapes: A Case Study of the Daegok-ri Site in Suncheon)

초록

본 연구는 순천 대곡리 유적을 통해 유적 경관의 디지털 재현방법과 과정을 제시하고, 활용 방향을 탐구하였다. 디지털 기술을 활용한 유적의 복원 및 재현 연구는 국내외에서 꾸준히 진행되고 있다. 해외 사례로는 로마 리본 프로젝트가 대표적이며, 국내 사례로는 한양도성 타임머신과 경주 서라벌 천년 시간여행 등이 있다. 이런 대규모 프로젝트는 주로 IT업체나 한정된 연구자들에 의해 수행되어왔다. 디지털 기술에 익숙하지 않은 연구자들에게는 고고학의 디지털적 접근이 여전히 어려운 과제로 남아 있다. 이를 보완하기 위해 고고학 연구자들이 유적 경관을 디지털로 쉽게 재현할 수 있도록 단계별 연구를 진행하였다.
연구 대상은 현재 수몰되어 육안으로 확인할 수 없는 순천 대곡리 유적이다. 고고 자료와 고환경·고지형 분석 자료를 반영하여 시각화 작업을 하였다. GIS, 3D 그래픽 기술, 실시간 렌더링 엔진, 3D 모델링 애셋(Asset) 등을 이용하여 재현된 유적은 다양한 방식으로 활용 가치가 높다. 학술적인 관점에서는 유적을 둘러싼 환경과 청동기시대 움집 및 지석묘의 입지 간 관계를 시각적으로 제시하여 연구적 이해를 돕는다. 실용적인 관점에서는 가상현실(VR), 증강현실(AR)을 적용하여 교육 및 전시 자료로 활용될 수 있으며, 가상 관광 자원이나 확장현실(XR) 몰입형 콘텐츠로 제작되어 문화유산의 보존에 기여할 수 있다. 이를 위해서는 향후 3D 모델링 플랫폼과 아카이빙을 구축하고, 데이터를 공유할 수 있는 체계적인 시스템이 필요하다. 예를 들어 국가유산청의 국가유산포털 3D문화유산에서 제공되는 3D 모델링 애셋(Asset) 데이터처럼 고고 자료를 아카이빙하고, 대중과 공유할 수 있는 플랫폼이 마련된다면 유적의 디지털 복원 및 재현 연구가 더욱 활성화될 것으로 판단된다.

This study explores methods and processes for digitally reconstructing archaeological landscapes, focusing on the Daegok-ri site in Suncheon, and examines potential applications of such reconstructions. Study on the restoration and digital representation of heritage sites using digital technology has been steadily progressing both domestically and internationally. Notable international examples include the Rome Reborn Project, while domestic projects such as the Hanyangdoseong Time Machine and the Gyeongju Seorabeol Millennium Time Travel exemplify this trend. These large-scale projects have primarily been conducted by IT companies or a limited number of researchers, making digital approaches in archaeology challenging for those less familiar with digital technologies. To facilitate easier digital reconstruction of archaeological landscapes by researchers, a step-by-step study was conducted.
The subject of this study is the Daegok-ri site in Suncheon, which is currently submerged, rendering visual observation of the landscape difficult. Visualization was performed by incorporating archaeological data, paleoenvironmental information, and paleotopographic analysis. The site was reconstructed using GIS, 3D graphics technology, real-time rendering engines, and 3D modeling assets, enhancing its value for various applications. From an academic perspective, the visual representation of the surrounding environment and the spatial relationships between Bronze Age pit houses and dolmens aids in research comprehension. Practically, the reconstruction can be utilized as educational and exhibition material through virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). It can also contribute to cultural heritage preservation by being developed into virtual tourism resources or immersive extended reality (XR) content.
To achieve this, establishing 3D modeling platforms and systematic archiving systems for data sharing is essential. For instance, if platforms similar to the Cultural Heritage Administration's National Heritage Portal's 3D Cultural Heritage section or the Korea Cultural Information Service's Metaverse Data Lab, which provide 3D modeling asset data, are developed for archiving and public sharing, study on the digital restoration and representation of archaeological sites will become more active.
