초록

이 글은 태국 방콕 퀸 씨리낏 직물 박물관의 전시를 분석하고 이를 통해 태국 국가가 지향하는 국가 정체성이 드러나는 양상을 파악하였다. 박물관은 서구 식민지 경험을 가진 동남아시아 국가들이 근대 국가수립 이후에도 의도적으로 식민지적 근대로서 서구의 시각을 박물관 전시에 표상하고 있는 점과 비교해서 주목되는 점이 파악되었다. 퀸 씨리낏 박물관은 타이족의 역사인 아유타야시대의 견직물 생산과 의복 문화를 부각하고 현재 타이족 중심의 방콕 왕실 역사의 정체성으로서 강조하고 있다. 특히 라마 5세의 근대화 치적을 부각하여 라마 5세가 주변 지역을 방문하고 서구의 근대적 문물을 접하게 된 과정, 이를 통해 씨암 왕국에 양잠과 견 생산 개혁,의복의 서구화를 추진한 내용을 강조하고 있다. 동시에 라마 9세 왕과 왕비의 농촌 직물 부흥 운동과 북부 따이족의 전통 직물 문화를 씨암 왕실과 타이족의 전통 문화로 상징화하는 타이 민족주의 성향을 드러내고 있다. 그럼에도 박물관의 전시에는 타이족이 아닌 다른 문화적 배경을 가진 종족들의 직물과 의복문화들은 철저히 배제되고 있다. 또한 태국 왕실과 세계적으로 유명한 서구 디자이너들과의 인연, 미국을 중심으로 하는 서구 지역과의 긴밀한 우호관계를 강조하고 있었다. 종합적으로 방콕 퀸 시리킷 직물 박물관의 전시 표상은 기존의 태국 국가 정체성의 3가지 요소로 언급된 왕실, 불교, 타이민족주의 가운데 왕실과 타이 민족주의가 중요한 국가 표상으로 강조되고 있었지만 불교적 요소는 드러나고 있지 않았다. 오히려 라마 5세부터 라마 9세 시기 왕실이 추구해온 서구적 근대를 부각함으로서 불교 대신 태국 왕실에 의해 추진된 서구적 근대를 강조하고 있었다.

영어초록

This study analyzed the representation of exhibition programs and exhibits of the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles in Bangkok, Thailand, and tried to understand how the national identity of the Thai court and Thailand is revealed, For this purpose, the representations of the museum from the past to the present were analyzed through literature and field research.
The museum emphasizes the production of silk fabrics and independent clothing culture of the Ayutthaya period, which is the history of the Thai people, as a history symbolizing the identity of the Bangkok court history, In particular, Museum emphasized the process of Rama V's visit to Singapore, Indonesian Java and promoting the westernization of modern culture and clothing in the Siam kingdom through the intensive emphasis on Rama V'.
At the same time, through the revival policy of the traditional textiles of the rural areas of the Queen Sirikit, which symbolizes the court of Rama IX, the Thai nationalistic tendency to symbolize the traditional textile culture of the Tai people in the northern region is the the traditional culture of the Thai people in Siam. while the textiles and clothing cultures of muslim or other cultural backgrounds in the northern and southern regions of Thailand are intentionally excluded.
Also, the costumes of the queen were reinterpreted as Western design through famous designers of the world based on traditional Thai fabrics. The museum emphasized the relationship with world famous Western designers who were involved in the costume production of the queen for 20 years and the close friendship with the western region centered on the United States. As a result, the exhibition representation of the museum intentionally reproduced and strengthened as a key element of Thai court and national identity, the Thai nationalism based on the traditional culture of Thailand, focusing on the Rama V and Rama IX. Nevertheless, among the court, Buddhist and Thai nationalism, which have been mentioned as three elements of the existing Thai national identity, Buddhist elements have not been revealed at all in the museum.
