송국리형 묘제 연구의 최근 동향과 쟁점 (Recent Trends and Controversial Issues of the Studies of Songgukri-style Tombs)

초록

이글은 송국리형 묘제 연구의 최근 동향과 쟁점을 검토한 것이다. 특히 전기단계 묘제와의 연속성 문제, 그중에서도 고인돌문화와의 상관성 문제를 중심으로, 그러한 논의들의 주요 현안 및 결론에 이르게 되는 과정 등을 종합적으로 살폈다. 이와 함께 향후의 연구과제 및 이를 위한 방향성 제시 등 몇 가지를 검토하였는데 주요 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 송국리형 묘제에 대한 개념이 명확하지 않았던 초창기의 연구에서는 고인돌과 송국리형 묘제가 공반되는 사례가 드물어 양자를 배타적으로 보는 인식이 강하였다. 하지만 1990년대 이후 지속적인 자료의 축적을 통해 송국리문화와 고인돌은 일정한 지역성을 띠면서 상호간에 영향관계에 있다는 사실이 차츰 드러나고 있다. 둘째, 최근의 연구와 같이 송국리형 묘제가 형성 및 확산되는 과정에는 석관묘･석개토광묘･옹관묘 등의 전형적인 세트관계 외에도 보다 다양한 요소가 복합된 것으로 이해된다. 특히 금강하류지역에 한정되어 전형성을 보이는 송국리형 묘제의 패턴은 ‘송국리문화의 묘제’중 하나일 뿐, 그 자체가 송국리문화 전체를 대표하는 것이 아니라는 지적이 관련 연구자들에게 많은 공감을 얻고 있다. 그렇기에 본고에서 중점적으로 살펴본 고인돌과의 관계성 문제와 함께 여타 전기단계 묘제들과의 보다 포괄적인 측면에서의 관계성 고찰 역시 남겨진 과제가 된다. 셋째, 고인돌의 덮개돌과 달리 석관묘의 개석은 외부에 노출될 목적이 부여되지 않는다. 그러한 맥락에서 송국리 1호 석관묘의 개석이 한 장의 커다란 판석재로 구성된 점, 그리고 그 상면에 다수의 성혈이 새겨져 있는 점 등은 여러모로 보아 덮개돌(고인돌)의 규격과 기능(노출)을 차용한 듯한 인상을 준다. 유력자의 무덤을 조성함에 있어 상호 이질적인 두묘제의 유사한 상장풍습을 공유하거나 제 요소가 복합된 현상은 여러 가지 면에서 시사점을 준다. 그렇기에 두 묘제의 요소가 복합되어 있는 송국리1호 석관묘의 기능과 성격에 대한 문제 역시 중요한 연구과제가 될 수 있다. 이는 결국 석관묘가 중심이 되는 송국리형 묘제의 출현 및 형성과정에 있어 전기 단계의 묘제, 그중에서도 고인돌과의 관계를 고찰하는 문제로 다시 회귀된다. 또한 송국리 1호 석관묘의 시간적 위치를 재점검함은 물론 그 조영집단의 성격문제, 나아가 송국리유적내 전기와 중기집단의 연속성 문제를 아울러 고찰할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study reviews recent trends and controversial issues of the studies of Songgukri-style tombs. Focusing on the continuity with the tombs in the earlier stage, especially for the correlation issues with dolmen culture, this study investigated major issues comprehensively and the whole process to reach to conclusions. This study also reviewed several aspects such as further research tasks and suggestions for research direction to pursue. The major contents are summarized as follows. First, in the early stage of research when the concepts of Songgukri-style tombs were not clear, there were few cases in which dolmen and Songgukri-style tombs were accompanied. For this reason, there were strong tendencies to recognize both exclusively. However, through the steady accumulation of materials since the 1990s, it has been gradually revealed that there were influential relations mutually between Songgukri culture and dolmens showing specific locality. Second, it is understood that various elements were mixed in the process to form and expand Songgukri-style tombs, rather than typical set relationships such as stone-lined tombs, stone-lined tomb, pit-type tombs with a stone lid, and jar-coffin tomb. In particular, it was pointed out that the typical patterns of Songgukri-style tombs which were restricted to the downstream region of Geumgang River are just "one of the tombs of Songgukri culture" and it does not represent the whole Songgukri culture. Many relevant researchers agreed about this point of view. Therefore, investigations on its relationship with dolmens, which was studied intensively in this study, are the research tasks to pursue along with studies of relationship with other tombs in early times in more comprehensive aspect. Third, the stone lid of stone-lined tombs, unlike the stone lids of dolmens, had no purpose to be exposed outside. In that sense, the stone lid of the Songgukri stone-lined tomb #1 gave an impression that it adopted the size of the stone lid of dolmen and function (exposure) in the aspects that it consists of a single big panel stone and there were many holes on the surface of the top. It was noted that similar funeral conventions were shared in such different tombs and various elements were mixed there, which provides a lot of suggestions. Therefore, issues on the functions and nature of the Songgukri stone-lined tomb #1, which had mixed elements of two tombs, would be an important research task. Such issue returns to the topic of the relationship with tombs in early times, especially for with dolmens when studying the emergence and formation process of Songgukri-style tombs, which were mostly stone-lined tombs. In addition, further studies can review the times of the Songgukri stone-lined tomb #1 as well as the nature of the group that built the tombs, and the continuity issue of early and middle-stage tombs in the relic site of Songgukri.
