사바르까르와 간디의 역사 인식 (Savarkar and Gandhi: A Study of Their Historical Views)

초록

본 논문에서는『1857년 인도 독립 전쟁』과『힌두 스와라지』를 통해 볼 수 있는 간디와 사바르까르의 역사 인식 그리고 그 역사 인식에 바탕을 둔 스와라지의 개념과 스와라지 달성방법의 차이에 대해 고찰해보았다.
간디와 사바르까르는 역사의 기록보다는 그 안에 내재되어 있거나 기록되지 않은 원리에 더 방점을 두어야 한다고 생각했다. 사바르까르는 역사적 사건이 기술하는 사람의 의도나 이익을 위해 왜곡되어 있다면 제대로 된 시각으로 그것을 바로 잡아야 한다고 생각했다. 특히 혁명이라는 사건을 다룰 때는 단순한 사건으로 보는 것을 지양하고 그 사건이 발생하게 된 원인을 규명하려 노력해야 한다고 보았다. 그러한 시각으로 1858년 세포이 사건을 본다면 영국인이 왜곡하고 인도인들이 의식 없이 복제한 기술 내면에서 힌두와 무슬림이 단합하여 스와라지를 달성하고자 한 분명한 혁명 정신을 읽어 낼 수 있었다고 본 것이다. 한편으로 간디 역시 기록의 역사 내면에 있는 원리를 찾아야 한다고 주장했지만, 그에게 역사의 기록이란 왕과 전쟁의 연대기 이상의 의미는 없으며, 오히려 기록되지 않은 민중의 보편적인 삶이나 전승에 기록되어 있는 것들이 더 큰 의미를 지니고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 영혼의 힘을 살려내고 미래의 행동 양식을 알려주는 교훈이 되는 것이라고 보았다.
이러한 두 사람의 역사에 대한 인식의 차이는 스와라지의 개념과 달성방법론의 차이로 나타났다. 간디는 수동적 저항을 통한 개개인의 스와라지가 달성될 때, 사회와 국가의 스와라지 달성이 가능하며, 폭력과 같은 물리적인 힘을 동원하여 영국을 물리치는 것만으로는 진정한 스와라지를 이룰 수 없다고 보았다. 그러나 사바르까르는 진리의 시대가 아닌 때, 즉 식민지 인도에서 자국의 땅과 종교가 짓밟히고 있을 때, 스와라지 달성은 인도를 점령하고 있는 영국을 몰아내는 것을 의미하며, 그것을 위해서는 어떠한 방법도 정당하지 않은 것이 없다고 보았던 것이다.

영어초록

In this study, the followings are considered deeply: Savarkar's view of the history, Gandhi's view of it, their distinctive concepts of Swaraj based on their views of it, and their different ways to attain Swaraj.
In Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule and The Indian War of Independence of 1857, both of them said that the principles which were inherent or implicit in history or the ones which were not recorded in it should be more emphasized rather than the record of history.
Savarkar thought that, if historical events were distorted by the intentions or interests of the recorder, one had to correct them with the right perspectives. And also he asserted that in writing the history of revolutionary movements, a writer should not consider it as a simple accident or a accidental events, there should be an effort to investigate and determine what caused it to happen. And Savarkar emphasized the following: when Sepoy case in 1858 is considered with his perspective, impartial historian will be able to read definite revolutionary spirit from the description of history that distorted by the English and copied by the Indian without any consciousness, and also will know that Sepoy case was aimed to attain Swaraj through unity of the Hindu and the Muslims.
On the other hand, Gandhi also argued that the principles imbedded in the inner side of the record of history should be found out. But he thought the record of history did not mean more than just a chronicle about kings and wars. He believed universal human life that are not recorded in history was more meaningful, and the epic or traditions is far more useful to restore the soul-force and to tell the patterns of behavior in future.
Gandhi and Savarkar, they had a different definition for Swaraj and means to attain it, and then these are derived from differences in their cognition about history. Gandhi thought that all individuals gained Swaraj through passive resistance and then only the society and nation will be able to attained Swaraj. Also, he emphasized that true Swaraj could not be attained just through defeating Britain by using physical forces like violence. But Savarkar declared that attaining swaraj meant to eliminate or uproot British Rule and there was nothing unjust to do that, because their own country and religions have been insulted by Britain during the colonial period.
