근대계몽기 ‘국어교과 독본류’의 문체 연구 - 학습자와의 상관 관계를 중심으로 - (The Study on the Style of Reading Books of National Language Curriculum in Modern Enlightenment Era : Focusing on the Correlation with Learners)

초록

이 글은 근대계몽기 ‘국어교과 독본류’ 14종의 서사 체계에 드러난 문체의 특징을 총체적으로 살피고 그 문체의 특징과 학습자의 성격과 관련하여 한글 의식이 어떻게 구현되었는지를 고찰하였다.
‘국어교과 독본류’의 문체는 크게 4가지로 분류하였다. 첫째, 국한문혼용체 – 한문 중심 구결체(현토체) – 한문 본위 한주국종체(漢主國從體), 둘째, 국한문혼용체 – 한문 중심 직역언해체 – 한문 본위 한주국종체(漢主國從體), 셋째, 국한문혼용체 – 국문 중심 의역언해체 - 국문 본위 국주한종체(國主漢從體) - 일본식 음/훈독 형식 부기 문체, 넷째, 한글전용체 – 국문 중심의 한자병용체 – 국문 본위 국주한종체(國主漢從體)가 바로 그것이다.
이러한 문체 구분은 크게 세 시기로 분류하여 고찰하였다. 첫째, 1895년 대한제국 성립 직후의 출간 시기이다. 이 시기는 ‘국어교과 독본류’의 과도기적 문체가 잘 드러난 이 시기의 교과서는 공적 언어의 기준이 바뀜에 따라 그 표기가 교과서에 반영되었음을 보여주었다고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 사립기관에서 교과서를 편찬하는 시기이다. 이 시기의 텍스트는 실제 교육을 위해 가장 효과적인 문체를 선택하였으며 체계적 학습 또한 고려되어 교과서가 집필되었음을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 개인 편찬 교과서의 시대이다. 학습 대상에 따라 매우 독특한 편집체제를 갖추고 있는데 학습자가 여성인 경우 주로 한글에 주안점을 둬 여성 교육에 적합한 문체가 사용되었다고 할 수 있다. 초등(유년) 학습자를 대상으로 한 경우 각 텍스트의 권1은 한글전용체가 근간을 이루며 한 텍스트 안에서 학습자의 문식력을 전제한 단계별 문체의 중층적 변화가 엿보인다. 일반 국민을 대상으로 하는 교과서의 경우는 한자 학습과 더불어 학습자가 기초적인 소양을 함양하는 데 그 초점을 두었다고 할 수 있다. 교육 제도 안으로 수렵되지 못한 학습자의 교재였던 탓에 의미 전달과 문식력 제고를 위해 한자와 한글을 병기하는 문체가 주로 사용되었다. 국문과 한자의 길항 관계가 여실히 드러나는 교재류라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
이와 같은 고찰을 통해 제대로 된 어문규범이 존재하지 않는 상황에서 정부와 각 개인 저술가들이 펼치고자 했던 문체, 학습자, 한자 및 국문의 길항 관계는 궁극적으로 한자 및 한글 사이의 주도권 교체와 신규범의 필요성을 잠재적으로 내포하고 있는 상황을 나타낸 것이라고 할 수 있겠다.

영어초록

This study is to consider how awareness of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet was embodied in reading books of national language curriculum in modern enlightenment era. To be specific, we looked through the characteristic of style represented in 14 kinds of reading books generally, and considered how awareness of Hangeul was embodied regarding both the characteristic of style and learners' personality.
There are 4 types of stylistic variations in reading books of national language curriculum largely. First, the type is the style of Korean and Chinese characters in combination; focusing on Chinese characters accompanied by Korean pronunciation(Hyun-to style); Chinese characters first followed by Korean. Secondly, the type is the style of Korean and Chinese characters in combination; focusing on Chinese characters annotated by literal translation in Korean; Chinese characters first followed by Korean. Thirdly, the type is the style of Korean and Chinese characters in combination; focusing Korean annotated by liberal translation in Korean; Korean first followed by Chinese characters; making an additional writing both ideographically and phonetically in Japanese style. Fourth, the style is exclusive using of Hangeul; Focusing on Korean combined with Chinese characters; Korean first followed by Chinese characters.
These types of stylistic variations are classified into three periods. First, the period is right after the establishment of Korea Empire in 1895. In this period, there reveals a transitional style of reading books of national language curriculum, showing the reflection of writing method in textbooks linked with change of official language standard. Secondly, the period is when textbooks were compiled in private institutions. The textbooks of this period were written by choosing the most effective style and considering organized learning for real education. Third, the period is when textbooks were compiled by individual persons. The textbooks of this period have very characteristic compiling system according to learners. So, if learners were women, there focused on Korean style suitable for women's education. And for elementary or childhood course, the first volume of each textbook was based on exclusive using of Hangeul, showing multi layered changes related with learners' literacy. If for common people, there focused on learning of Chinese characters and cultivating of basic accomplishment. In this case, the textbooks were for learners out of educational system, so there used a combining style of Korean and Chinese character mainly. These textbooks reveal competitive relation clearly between Korean and Chinese character.
Through this study, it knows that under the situation having no proper language standard, competitive relation among styles, learners, Korean and Chinese characters which government and each individual writer intended involves that there needed leadership replacement between Chinese character and Korean, and a new standard.
