초록

2001년 일본 후쇼사교과서 반대운동에 참여한 일련의 학자군이 한국 역사교과서가 민족주의에 기반한 서술이라고 공격하였다. 이는 독도공유론이라는 형태로 나타났다. 한국의 독도공유론은 식민지근대화론으로 대표되는 식민사학과 자유주의 사관의 ‘기묘한’ 연대 속에서 일본의 와다 하루키와 와카미야 요시부미 등의 영향 속에서 펴져나갔다.
특히 배성준은 한국근대사를 수탈/근대라는 양분법으로 해석하는 학계의 연구현실을 비판하면서 수탈과 근대 모두를 보아야 한다고 주장하였다. 하지만 이는 박유하가 일본의 ‘위안부’의 강제성과 자발성을 모두 보아야 일본군 ‘위안부’라는 역사현실을 이해할 수 있다고 주장하지만 결국은 식민지근대화론과 ‘반’ 한국민족주의의 입장에서 “위안부는 강제성이 없었다.”는 결론을 이끌어낸 논리와 대단히 유사하다.
배성준은 제국주의적 성격으로 가득한 일본민조쿠슈기를 일제에 대한 저항과 반제 세계평화 이론으로 한국독립투쟁가들이 내세운 한국민족주의와 등치하여 인식하였다. 이점에서 그는 수탈보다 근대에 무게중심을 둔 박유하와 같은 식민지근대화론자, 식민사학자에 바탕을 둔 자유주의론자라고 해도 틀린 말은 아닐 것이다.
특히 배성준은 그는 독도문제를 제국주의의 침탈로 보는 정통적 해석을 부정하고 세계사 구조 속의 근대화 또는 근대성 문제로 접근하여 ‘수탈’이라는 진실을 제거해버렸던 것이다. 이를 위해 배성준은 박유하가 그러하듯이, 독도에 대한 한국 기록의 사실관계를 뒤바꾸어 뒤흔드는 일련의 작업을 통해 한국의 독도 영유권을 훼손시켰다.
결국, 「시마네현 고시 40호」의 존재가 부정되는 현실에서 배성준의 독도공유론은 학문의 범주에서 벗어난 ‘반’한국민족주의라는 정치의식의 결과로 보인다.

영어초록

This work aims to criticize a theory, so-called “the co-ownership of Dokdo with Japan.” Lately, there has been a growing tendency in the academic domain of Korea and Japan that “Korea may share Dokdo with Japan for the sake of Peace” and it is mostly by the historians who advocate the historical revisionism and liberalism. In this paper, it raises awareness and also questions especially that of Bae Sung Jun et al.
It appears that the idea of co-ownership of Dokdo and its logical background is rooted on a groundless aversion toward the Korean minjok-jui(민족주의) that was elaborated by revisionist historians such as Wada Haruki (和田 春樹) and Wakamiya Yoshibumi (若宮啓文). The problem arises from their holding such a position. Their logic has a great potentiality to free the Japanese imperialism from the war crime in the past and nullify the responsibility. Not only that, the theory implies Japanese imperialism had benefitted Korea by the industrialization of the nation following the international order at that time.
Bae also argues there is no concrete evidence for Korea to maintain the ownership of Dokdo, denying the authority and legitimacy of several historical manuscripts and works done by scholars. It seems that Bae also failed to understand the difference between the two different concepts, Japanese Minzoku-shugi that were dominant during the wartime and Korean Minjok-jui. Minzoku-shugi or Japanese nationalism was adopted by Japanese imperialism to justify her invasion to other nations and promote the peoples’ participation and sacrifice. On the other hand, the Korean Minjok-jui was a driving force for the independence activists as defending the oppressed and to free the nation from the violence for the sake of world peace.
Hence, it is not only a misguided notion that their claiming the dispute over the island is no more than an obstacle between the two nations, but also they should be aware that they represent the position of the Japanese government while working for the institutions supported by that of Korea. The theory given by Bae merely resulted in the total conversion of the oppressed and the oppressor, and now finally reached the conclusion of co-ownership of the island with Japan which would be never accepted by the people.
