초록

점점 심각해지고 있는 기후변화와 생태계 위기는 전체 인류가 이제까지 살아온 삶의 방식을 근본적으로 재고하고, 지금 당장 실천하지 않는다면 출구는 없다는 것을 인류에게 엄중히 경고한다. 동시에 우리에게 ‘지구적으로 생각’할 것을 강력히 촉구하고 있다.
오늘날 우리가 지구적으로 생각해야 할 것은 모든 존재들이 얽혀 세계를 구성하고 있다는 ‘존재론적 얽힘’과 그에 따른 ‘상호관계성’이다. 오늘날 인간의 작은 행동들이 모이고 쌓여 뜻하지 않은 나비효과, 더욱이 부정적인 나비효과를 불러온다는 것을 코로나 팬데믹을 통해 생생히 알게 되었기 때문이다. 이제 우리는 인간이 지구 생태계의 유일한 존재가 아닌 존재의 일부, 즉 다른 존재들과 함께 지구 생태계에서 살아가고 있는‘공생의 존재’임을 자각하고, 그에 따라 책임 있는 행동을 해야 할 때다.
각자도생, 무한경쟁, 승자독식의 패러다임에 길들여진 인간의 인식과 사고체계를 타인뿐만 아니라, 비인간 존재, 나아가 사물존재들과도 더불어 살아가는 공생적 사고체계로 전환하는 것이 필요하다. 이러한 배경에서 인간과 비인간, 즉 생명과 사물이 존재론적으로 얽혀있을 뿐만 아니라, 상호관계성 아래 있다는 것을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 개체주의가 가진 한계를 지적하면서, 동시에 개체주의를 넘어 관계적 존재론의 필요성을 논할 것이다. 이어서 생명과 사물의 존재론적 얽힘을 이론적으로 뒷받침하기 위해 캐런 바라드의 ‘내부-작용(intra-action)’과 도나 해러웨이의 ‘sympoiesis’ 개념을 살펴보고, 식물 간의 에너지 이동을 나타내는‘공유 균근 네트워크(Wood Wide Web)’와 ‘공생적 유기체(Symborg)’ 개념을 들어 비인간 유기체들 사이의 상호관계성을 드러내고자 한다. 마지막으로는 이러한 존재론적 얽힘과 상호관계성이 기독교 생태교육에 주는 함의를 알아볼 것이다.

영어초록

The increasingly severe climate change and ecological crisis are stern warnings to the entire human race that we must fundamentally rethink the way we have been living, and that there is no way to overcome these crises if we act right now. At the same time, they are it is strongly urging us to “think globally”.
What we need to think globally about today is the “ontological entanglement” and “interrelatedness” of all beings that make up the world. This is because we have learned vividly from the coronavirus pandemic that small human actions can collectively and cumulatively create unintended butterfly effects, even negative one. It is time for us to realize that we are not the only beings in the planetary ecosystem, but just parts of all beings on the earth, as symbionts living with other beings, and to act responsibly accordingly.
It is nearly unavoidable to reconstitute our ways of thinking tamed by the paradigms of self-reliance, infinite competition, and monopoly of winner, for ways to think of how one can live with other beings in sympoietic relationships. In this context, the term ‘being’ includes both animate beings and inanimate beings as well as nonhuman beings and things. Against this background, I would like to reveal that humans and non-humans, life and things, are not only ontologically intertwined but also interrelated. To this end, I will point out the limitations of individualism and discuss the need for a relational ontology. To theoretically support the ontological entanglement of animate and inanimate beings, I will refer to intra-action in Karen Barad and sympoiesis in Donna Haraway, connecting them to fungal networks, that is mycorrhizal networks, which are the foundation of Wood Wide Web, and the idea of symborg in Merlin Sheldrake. In this way, this article illustrates the interrelatedness of living and nonliving beings including exchanges of energy between non-human organisms, including the transfer of energy between plants. Finally, the paper explores the implications of these ontological entanglements and interrelationships for Christian ecological education.
