유가 귀신론의 사유 구조와 주희 귀신론의 독법 (The Confucian Speculation on Spirits and a Way of Reading Zhuxi’s Philosophy)

초록

전통 시대에 제사 행위가 갖는 정치적·형이상학적 의미는 오늘날보다 훨씬 다양하면서도 심오했고, 제사의 대상으로서의 귀신에 대한 묘사나 정의 또한 고대부터 다양한 형태로 이루어지고 있었다. 유가 전통의 형성과 함께 귀신 개념은 철학적으로 사유되기 시작하였고, 주희에 이르러 본체론의 중심 개념 가운데 하나로서 정식화되었다. 따라서 주자학의 귀신 개념을 이해하기 위해서는 그 사상적 원류의 하나인 유가 전통의 귀신 개념이 유가 경전 속에서 어떻게 형성되고 있는지를 검토하는 작업이 필요하다고 할 수 있다.
본 논문에서는 유가의 귀신과 제사에 관한 담론을 『중용』과 『맹자』를 중심으로 분석, 제사의 근원과 대상(귀신 혹은 조상)에 관한 상보적인 두 입장을 제시하여 주자학의 귀신론 탐색을 위한 예비적 고찰을 수행하고, 이어서 주자학의 귀신 개념이 갖는 다층적 의미를 검토하고 유가 경전과의 연계 상에서 선행 연구를 비판적으로 검토한 뒤, 주자학의 귀신 개념 이해를 위한 하나의 독법을 제시한다.
선행 연구와의 비교적 관점에서 볼 때 본 연구는 두 측면의 의의를 갖는다. 첫째, 기존 주자학의 귀신론 연구에서 그다지 주목받지 못한 유가 전통의 귀신론의 사유 구조를 규명함으로써 주희 귀신론을 경학적 맥락에서 더욱 풍부하게 고찰할 수 있는 지평을 조명한 것이다. 둘째, 귀신 개념을 주자학의 전체 체계 속에서 정합적으로 해명하려는 기존의 시도들에 새로운 각도의 독법을 제시하여, 전통 시대의 학술에 입각한 보다 면밀한 탐구를 제안하였다는 점이다.

영어초록

In the traditional era, the political and metaphysical significance of sacrificial rituals was much more diverse and profound than today, and the description and definition of spirits (鬼神) as objects of sacrificial rituals have also been various since ancient times. As the Confucian ritual tradition took shape of its own, the concept of spirits began to be contemplated and thus philosophized, and at the time of Zhuxi it came to be formalized as one of the central concepts of Neo-Confucian ontology. Therefore, in order to understand the concept of spirits, it can be said that it is necessary to examine how the concept of spirits in the Confucian tradition, which is the ideological origin, is formed in the Confucian classics.
In this paper, the discourse on spirits and rituals in Confucian classics is analyzed focusing on The Doctrine of the Mean and Mencius, and the two complementary positions on the sources and objects (spirits or ancestors) of the sacrificial rituals are presented to reveal the multi-layered structure of the concept of spirits, and to review critically the concept of spirits in previous studies in the light of the connection between the Confucian classics and Zhuxi’s understanding of spirits.
From the comparative perspective with previous research, this study has two aspects of significance. First, by clarifying the structure of the theory of spirits in the Confucian tradition, which has not received much attention in the existing study of Zhuxi’s theory of spirits, it is possible to lay the groundwork for a richer consideration of the concept of spirits in the context of the studies of Confucian classics. Second, it proposed a more detailed exploration based on the academics of the traditional era by presenting a new angle of reading to existing attempts to consistently explain the concept of spirits in the entire system of Zhuxi’s philosophy.
