초록

본 소고는 피어선의 기독론을 존재론적 측면에서 다룬다. 피어선의 신학이 전체적으로 루터(Martin Luther, 1483-1546)와 칼빈(John Calvin, 1509-1564)의 신학에 그 뿌리를 철저히 두고 있다는 사실은 이미 피어선 연구자들 사이에 잘 알려져 있다. 논자는 본고에서 단순히 ‘피어선이 루터와 칼빈의 기독론을 철저히 따르고 있다.’는 결론을 먼저 내리고 피어선의 저작들로부터 그 증거들을 몇몇 보임으로써 나의 주장이 옳다고 하며 글을 마무리하고 싶지는 않다. 이유는 그렇게 했을 때에 피어선의 기독론만이 갖는 진위성(genuineness)이 사라지게 되기 때문이다. 피어선의 기독론이 단지 루터와 칼빈의 기독론을 철저히 따르는 데에만 그친다면, 굳이 피어선의 기독론을 볼 필요성도 사라진다. 루터와 칼빈의 기독론만 보면 되기 때문이다. 그렇다고 ‘피어선이 루터와 칼빈 그 누구도 전혀 따르지 않는다.’라고 논자가 주장하고 싶지도 않다. 이렇게 되면, 피어선은 정통신학에서 너무 멀리 떨어진 주장을 하는 사람이 되어 버리기 때문이다. 논자는 그 둘 사이에서 씨름하고자 한다. 다시 말해서, 논자는 피어선이 루터와 칼빈의 기독론의 핵심을 철저히 따르지만, 세부적 측면까지 모두 같지는 않다고 주장하고자 한다. 본고 전체의 밑바탕에 깔려 있는 논자의 문제의식은 성육신 이전의 로고스(Christ the Logos)와 성육신하신 그리스도(Christ the Incarnation), 그리고 영화하신 그리스도(Glorified Christ), 이렇게 셋 사이의 존재론적 동일성을 어떻게 적절히 해명할 수 있느냐이다.
이러한 연구의 정당성을 주장하기 위해 본고는 먼저 피어선의 존재론적 기독론의 핵심이 루터와 칼빈의 기독론과 공약 가능성을 갖는지 여부를 비판적으로 다룬다. 그런 다음, 저명한 신학자들이 루터의 기독론과 칼빈의 기독론 사이에 존재론적 측면에서 차이가 있다고 인정함을 비판적으로 다룬다. 그런 다음, 루터의 기독론이 유티키안적 단성론으로 기우는지를 루터의 작품들로부터 확인한다. 그런 다음, 칼빈의 기독론이 네스토리안적 양성론으로 치우치는지를 칼빈의 작품들로부터 확인한다. 그리고 마지막으로, 피어선의 기독론이 이 둘 사이의 어디에 위치하며 피어선의 기독론이 갖는 진위성이 어떤 형이상학적 정당성을 갖는지를 다룬다. 아울러 논자는 피어선의 기독론이 갖는 잠재적 약점에 대한 신학적 보완이 루터의 기독론이나 칼빈의 기독론의 단점들을 극복할 뿐 아니라 이 셋의 공약 불가능성을 공약 가능성으로 만들어 줄 수 있음을 보인다.

영어초록

This article deals with ontological aspects of A. T. Pierson's Christology. Generally speaking, it is well known fact among Pierson researchers that Pierson place his theological roots deep inside the ground of Martin Luther and John Calvin. In this article, the writer does not want to simply conclude that “Pierson thoroughly follows Christology of Luther and Calvin” and say that the thesis is truthful by giving few proofs from Pierson's writings. It is because, by doing so, the genuineness of Pierson's Christology disappears. If Pierson's Christology merely follows Luther and Calvin's Christology thoroughly, then there is no need of taking a look at Pierson's Christology. It is because we could simply take a look at only Luther's and Calvin's Christology. The writer, however, does not want to argue that Pierson follows neither Luther nor Calvin. If so, Pierson becomes a theologian who argues a Christology too far from the mainstream of the Christian orthodoxy. The writer tries to wrestle between these two. In other words, the writer argues that while Pierson follows the core of Luther's and Calvin's Christology thoroughly specific aspects are not all the same. The problematic theme in question that underlies at the bottom of this entire paper is that how to elucidate the ontological identity legitimately throughout these three: Christ the Logos, Christ the Incarnation, and Christ the Glorified To clarify the legitimacy of this research, this article first critically deals with the core of Pierson's ontological Christology if it is commensurable with Luther and Calvin's. Secondly, it is critically dealt that well known theologians approve that there are the differences between Luther's and Calvin's Christology in ontological aspects. Thirdly, it is confirmed with Luther's works if Luther's Christology has inclination to Eutychian monophysitism. Fourthly, it is validated with Calvin's works if Calvin's Christology is inclined to Nestorian dyophisitism. Lastly, it is dealt where Pierson's Christology stands in-between Luther's and Calvin's and what metaphysical legitimacy the genuineness of Pierson's Christology would have. In addition to this, the writer argues that the theological revisioning to the potential weaknesses in Pierson's Christology must not only overcome the drawbacks of both in Luther's and Calvin's Christology but also transform the incommensurability of these three into a commensurability.
