초록

이효석의 단편소설에는 신화적인 모티프들이 반복적으로 드러난다. 과학이라는 이름하에 신화는 원시적인 시대에 가지고 있던 권능을 잃어버린 상태이다. 즉 지금의 우리는 일회적이고 단편적인 역사에 매어 삶의 원초적인 원형의 심원에 멀어져 있다. 이러한 시대에 살아가고 있는 우리들에게 이효석 문학은 신화적인 상상력을 통해 영원한 신성성의 회복을 제시한다. 특히 돼지, 소, 개, 뱀 등 동물의 이미지는 원초적인 생명력과 결합되어 있다. 인류의 역사를 통해 지속적으로 작용되어 온 동물적 이미지의 원형은 이효석 문학의 신화적 상상력에 중요한 지점이다. 특히 「돈」, 「들」, 「수탉」등의 작품에서 드러나는 동물적 이미지와 인간의 성적인 결합에 대한 부분은 반복적으로 강조된다. 또한 식물의 이미지도 동물의 이미지 만큼 이효석의 문학에서 중요한 모티프로 작용한다. 나무, 나뭇잎, 열매 등의 이미지들도 성적인 결합과 연결되어 반복적으로 제시된다. 여기서 주목해야 될 점은 작품 속에서 성적인 결합은 결코 퇴폐적이거나 부정적으로 그려지지 않았다는 점이다. 작품 속 인물들의 성적인 욕망은 방종과 문란함이 아닌 생명력으로 표출된다.
또한 작품 속 인물들은 성(聖)의 세계를 끊임없이 욕망한다. 그들은 황무지를 개간하고 산을 오르며 세계의 중심을 향한 반복적의 제의를 실행한다. 인물들의 이러한 행동은 규칙들이 붕괴하여 혼란스러운 카오스의 영역에서 벗어나 코스모스의 영역으로 들어가고자 하는 노력이다. 속된 세계에 빠져버린 삶에 대한 성찰은 우리가 근원적인 원형을 찾아가게 하는 중요한 원인이다. 중심이라 불리우는 성역의 요소들은 인간에게 고정성을 제공하고 삶의 의미와 본질을 밝힐 수 있게 한다. 소설 속의 인물들은 누군가에 의해서 이미 행해졌던 원초적인 행위들을 반복한다. 그들은 세계의 중심을 축조하고 영원회귀적인 신화에 진입을 시도하는 것이다. 이효석은 문학 안에서 고대의 원형적인 심성을 끊임없이 자극한다. 지금의 시대는 합리주의와 과학에 매몰되어 황량해져있다. 이러한 시대에 이효석은 신화적인 상상력을 통해 영원토록 반복되는 신화적 순간을 우리에게 제공하여 삶의 실존적 의미를 돌아보게 한다.

영어초록

Lee Hyo-seok 's short stories repeatedly present mythical motifs. Under the name of science, the present mythology lost its power of primitive times.
In other words, we are bound by a one-time, fragmentary history and thus continue to drift apart from primitive archetypal origin of life. For those of us who are living in these times, Lee’s works show repetition of eternal divinity through mythical imagination. In particular, the images of animals such as pigs, cows, dogs, and snakes are combined with primordial vitality. The prototype of the animal image that has been continuously applied through human history serves as an important point in the mythical imagination of Lee’s literature. Significantly, the part with respect to sexual intercourse of human and the animal image revealed in his works such as Money, Dog, Cock is consistently emphasized. In addition, the image of the plant is an important motif in his literature as much as that of the animal. The images of trees, leaves, and fruits are repeatedly portrayed in connection with the sexual intercourse. What should be noted here is that the sexual intercourse in his works is never described as being decadent or negative. The sexual desires of the characters in the works are expressed as vitality, not indulgence and disorder.
What is more, the characters appearing in the works constantly desire the world of the holiness. They cultivate the wasteland and climb the mountain, and carry out repetitive ceremonies to the center of the world. The behavior of the characters is an effort to get out of the confused chaos in which the rules are collapsed, and to reach to the realm of the cosmos. Reflection of life that has fallen into a vulgar world is considered as an important cause for us to seek the original prototype. The elements of a sanctuary, called the center, provide a sense of stability to humans and enable us to reveal the meaning and essence of life. The characters presented in his works repeat primitive actions already done by someone. They build the center of the world and try to come into an eternally repetitive myth. He constantly stimulates the archetype nature of ancient times in his literature. The present era remains buried in rationalism and science, which in turn led to becoming desolate world. In this age, Lee Hyo-seok gives us mythical moments through mythical imagination that are repeated forever through mythical imagination, thereby making us look at the existential meaning of life.
