소통, 사회구조와 의미론— 코젤렉의 개념사 연구의 대안으로서 루만의 의미론 — (Communication, Societal Structure and Semantics — Luhmann’s Semantics as an Alternative to Koselleck’s Conceptual History —)

초록

본 논문은 루만의 “의미론” 연구의 성과를 분석한다. 의미론에 관해서는, 사회구조와 의미론 상관관계 테제와 소통과 의미론의 순환관계 테제를 끌어낼수 있다. 본 논문은 일반적으로 알려진 상관관계 테제를 순환관계 테제의 기본틀 안에 통합할 것을 주장한다. 의미론과 사회구조는 둘 다 형식인 반면,소통과 의미론은 사건과 형식으로서 루만 사회 이론의 기본 구도이기 때문이다. 루만에게 있어 사회적 세계는 소통 사건의 창발에서 생성되고 형식에 힘입어 후속 사건으로 이어진다. 소통은 의미론을 만들어 내고, 의미론은 그 자신이 소통을 통해 활성화되며 후속 소통을 용이하게 한다. 순환관계 테제는소통과 의미론과 기능체계들의 생성과 변이를 설명할 수 있다. 루만의 근대분석은 소통 기관들의 독립분화와 의미론과 기능체계들의 독립분화가 서로를진작시킨 결과 “기능적으로 분화된 세계 사회”로의 구조 변동을 완료했다는데에 있다.
루만의 의미론 분석은 코젤렉의 개념사 연구 전통의 문제의식을 계승했는데,이제 개념사 분석을 이론적·방법론적으로 지원할 수 있다. 개념사 연구가 역사적·정치적 차원에만 분석을 제한한 데에 비해, 의미론 연구는 전체 사회의 맥락에서 모든 사회영역들에 대해 이루어진다. 역사주의에만 의존하는관점은 기능주의적으로 통제되는 관점으로, 단수의 개념사는 복수의 의미론으로 대체된다. 지식을 존재구속성에 묶고 인간행동을 결과하는 것으로 보는유물론적 전통의 지식사회학적 관점은 의미론 자체가 소통을 통해서만 현실화될 수 있다는 점도 고려하는 체계이론적 지식사회학적 관점으로 대체된다.
무엇보다도 루만의 의미론 분석은 사건을 기본 단위로 하고 있기 때문에, 장기간에 걸쳐 발생하는 역사적 변화뿐만 아니라 단기간에 실행되는 역사적 사건의 분석에도 사용될 수 있다.

영어초록

This article examines Luhmann’s analysis of semantics to show how thecorrelation of societal structure with semantics can be integrated with thecircular relationship of communication and semantics. This is becausecommunication, as an event, and semantics, as a form, make up the basiccomposition of Luhmann’s theory of society; whereas both semantics andsocietal structure are regarded as forms. For Luhmann, social systems aregenerated by the emergence of particular modes of communication, andtheir successful propagation depends on their form. Communicationsgenerate semantics, and semantics are activated through communications,facilitating subsequent communications. The thesis of circular relations can explain the generation of and variation among communication, semantics,and functional systems. Luhmann’s analysis of modernity proposes thatdifferentiated modes of communication and differentiated specificsemantics and functional systems act together synergistically to completethe structural changes necessary to establish a “functionally differentiatedworld society”.
Luhmann’s analysis of semantics, which has been influenced by theconceptual history studies of Reinhart Koselleck, and addresses a similar setof problems, can now contribute some theoretical and methodologicalassistance to the study of history. Whereas the study of conceptual historylimits itself to the historic and political dimensions, the study of semantics isapplicable to almost all societal spheres. A perspective dependent onhistoricism is replaced by one in which historicism is mediated byfunctionalism, and a singular history of concepts gives way to pluralsemantics. A sociology of knowledge in the materialist tradition, in whichknowledge is bounded by existence and this influences human actions, isreplaced by a system-theoretical sociology of knowledge, in whichsemantics can be actualized only through communication. Thus, Luhmann’sanalysis of semantics, which is built up from events, can be adapted tostudy historical processes transpiring in a short space of time as well asthose occurring over a longer period.
