초록

<왕랑반혼전>에 대한 선행 연구는 논자의 입장에 따라 상이한 내용으로 전개되어 왔다. 이에 본고에서는 <왕랑반혼전>의 연원을 나말여초로 보고 근원설화를 검토하여 연관성을 추적했으며, 등장하는 인물과 내용 전개에 대한 고찰과 ‘저승사자 속이기’의 화소를 통해 공통점과 차이점을 비교하여 서사 전개상의 양상을 고찰하였다. 본고는 <왕랑반혼전>의 서사적 미흡함이 기존의 무속적 근원설화에 불교적 윤색을 하는 과정에서 나타났다고 보았다. 기존의 설화, 특히 <장자풀이> 중 저승사자 속이기 화소의 공통점과 차이점을 비교했는데 저승사자들이 자신들이 받은 대접에 대한 보답을 스스로 결정한다는 점에서 저승보다 이승을 우위에 두는, 불교적 세계관이 자리잡기 전 민중적 사고방식에서 기인한다고 보았다. <장자풀이>의 결말이 연명이라는 현실지향적인 방향으로 마무리되는데 반해 <왕랑반혼전>의 결말은 환생과 연명을 통한 극락왕생이라는 점에서 대중을 교화하려는 목적이 있기 때문에 반대의 양상을 보인다고 하였다. 이것은 고유 샤머니즘의 현실적이고 포용적인 성격에 의한 것으로 무불습합의 흔적이 보이며 극락왕생의 필연성을 강조하기 위해 불교적 윤색을 첨가한 것이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 기존 설화는 나말여초에 이미 존재해 있었으며 불교적인 윤색을 통해 소설로 충분히 발전할 수 있었을 것이라 추정하였다.

영어초록

Previous studies on <Wangrangbanhonjeon> have been developed with different contents depending on the position of the writer. This is due to the incomplete content of <Wangrangbanhonjeon> and the unfinished composition in terms of form. In this paper, we have looked at the origin of <Wangrangbanhonjeon> in the late Silla period and early Goryeo period. Then, the origin story was examined and the association was traced. Then, we examined the aspect of the narrative development by comparing the similarities and differences between the characters of the emerging characters and the contents of 'deceiving grim reaper'. <Maengambonpuri> of Cheju Island, <Hwangcheonhonshi> of Hamkyungdo, <Jangjapuri> of Jeolla province and the corresponding folk tales and fables are compared with the structure of <Wanganwanjeon>. Therefore, I saw a contradiction occurred in narrative gaps <Wangranbanhonjeon> in the process of changing a Buddhist tales. In addition, I discussed the structural characteristics and historical background of <Wangranbanhonjeon> as a result of the combination of shamanism and Buddhism. We compared the common points and differences of existing narratives, especially those of <Jangjapuri>. In this article, we saw that grim reaper originated from a popular way of thinking that puts this world ahead of the other world in that it decides for itself the reward for the treatment received. Although <Jangjapuri> is a reality-oriented ending that prolongs life, the end of <Wangranbanhonjeon> shows the opposite aspect because it is aimed at rehabilitating the masses in that it is a paradigm through extension of life and reincarnation. This is due to the realistic and inclusive character of shamanism, which shows the traces of the combination of shamanism and Buddhism, and adds Buddhist features to emphasize the inevitability of Gekrakwangsaeng. Therefore, the existing folklore was already existed in Silla and Goryeo period, and it was estimated that the Buddhist motif could have developed sufficiently as a novel.
