뫼비우스의 띠로 본 엘리자베스 비숍의「대기실에서」 (Elizabeth Bishop’s“ In the Waiting Room” as a Möbius Strip)

초록

엘리자베스 비숍의 시는 그 내면에 있는 심층적인 의미를 정당하게 평가받지못하다가 최근에 이르러 그 진가를 인정받고 있다. 소위 모더니즘과 포스트모더니즘 사이의 경계에서 작품을 썼던 비숍은 이국적인 것을 평범한 것에 연결시키면서도 시의 차가운 표면을 유지함으로써 독자를 불확실하고 애매모호한 이중성의 혼합 세계로 이끌었는데, 특히「대기실에서」“( In the Waiting Room”)라는 작품을 통해 독자를 뫼비우스의 띠의 세계로 인도하여 그 속에 감추어진 심층의 의미를 일깨워 준다. 뫼비우스의 띠는 위상수학적인 곡면으로 하나의 표면과 하나의 경계를 지닌 안과 밖의 구별이 없는 물체로써, 안과 밖, 시작과 끝, 앞과 뒤가동시에 공존하고 있는 존재이다. 이는 동시에 상반적이거나 모순적인 요소들, 혹은 양분화 될 수 있는 요소들이 분명한 경계를 갖고 서로 다른 영역에 존재하는것이 아니라, 또한 서로를 구분하는 이분법이 아니라, 서로의 특징적인 영역을가지면서도 서로가 서로의 경계를 허물며 하나로 이어지는 것을 의미한다. 비숍의 시,「 대기실에서」는 겉으로 보기에 치과의 대기실에서 고모가 치과 치료를 받는 동안 기다리면서『내셔널 지오그래픽』지를 보고 있는 한 소녀가 순간적으로예기치 않은 현현(epiphany)의 순간을 맞이하게 되는 묘사를 통해 통과의례적인과정으로서의 삶의 일과로 남을 수 있는 평범한 이야기를 담고 있는 것 같지만,면밀히 심층적으로 분석해보면 모든 것을 각기 있는 그대로 하나의 세계에 뒤섞여 존재하도록 함으로써 공존의 장을 단행하는 비숍의 대우주적인 관점을 보여준다. 비숍은 이 시를 통해 안과 밖에 대한 의문을 통해 자아 정체성을 점검하며,텍스트와 독자, 그들의 안과 밖, 그리고 자아 정체성의 확대를 통해 안과 밖의 미묘한 관계와 그 관계의 전복, 그리고 이를 통한 통렬한 현실 인식에 대한 탐구를감행함으로써 처음부터 끝까지 뫼비우스 띠의 형상을 완성시킨다.

영어초록

Elizabeth Bishop has been evaluated by critics or other writers who determined that she had an accurate eye and the keen powers of observation that surprise the reader into sudden perception. However, what has been less noted and too frequently neglected in her work is her intense introspection and her deeply inward-looking gaze. We should reevaluate her in a new way to make the point that she creates new things with her difficult labor and the acknowledged mastery of poetic techniques that make all oxymoronic factors coexistant into her works. Her macrocosm-like recognition of the world through microcosm-like description is patterned in the manner of a Mobius strip, especially in her poem,“ In the Waiting Room.”The Mobius strip which was discovered by the German mathematicians is a surface with only one side and only one boundary component. It has the mathematical property of being non-orientable and it is also a ruled surface. The Mobiuse strip is a thing which has one inside and outside surface simultaneously, with no beginning or ending, front and rear at the same time and at the same place, which means the controversial or oxymoronic factors exist in a world independently and together, without having any boundary or dichotomy. Therefore then, the appearance/reality, truth/fiction, life/art, writer/reader, literal/figurative dichotomy are reversed and coexistant.
Bishop has challenged the stability of distinctions between inside/outside polarity through the poem “In the Waiting Room,”which presents an almost seven year-old girl's moment of awakening to the separations and the bonds among human beings, to the forces that form individual identity through the interrelated recognitions of community and the world. She makes humans and beasts, the dentist's building and the world outside of the building, book and poem, reader and writer, man and woman mixed up inside/out or outside/in through young Elizabeth's epiphany, her mind's journey, and all this whirled up together, which finally creates the effects of coexistence. This is the very human world that young Elizabeth has recognized through the journey of putting her imagination in and out in the waiting room of a dentist's while her aunt is treated inside. The whirling world as the Mobius strip can be a metaphor of the journey into an uncertain world. Bishop who wrote poetry between the boundary of modernism and post-modernism leads the reader to the double world of uncertainty and ambiguity, so called, the world of the Mobius strip, by keeping the surface of poetry cool, which finally forces the reader into finding the hidden meaning within her poems.
