초록

본고는 인도 딴뜨라 전통들의 상호 관계와 발전사를 비교 연구하는 방법론에 대해 고찰한다. 특히 대표적 딴뜨라 전통인 밀교와 샤이바 사이의 긴밀한 연관성을 추적하기 위해 어떻게 문헌 전거를 다룰 수 있는지 예증하고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 지금까지 딴뜨라 전통들 사이의 유사성을 설명하는 데에 어떤 가설과 주장들이 있었는지 간략히 소개하고, 그 논의를 문헌학적 방법에 어떻게 적용할 수 있는지를 고찰한다. 또한 이를 통해 종교 간 비교 연구에서 문헌적 근거들을 어떻게 분류하여 접근할 수 있는지를 살펴본다. 이를 위해 본고는 후기 밀교와 불이원론 샤이바의 문헌에서 공유되는 유사 혹은 평행 구문 속에서 중관의 ‘공성’개념이 샤이바에 의해서는 어떻게 채택, 활용되었는지, ‘불이’라는 궁극적 상태가 어떻게 유사하게 묘사되는지, 그 구체적인 내용들을 분석한다. 관련 게송들은 두 가지로 분류되는데, 저자성을 떠나 있는 딴뜨라 경전에서 발견되는 평행 게송의 예를 먼저 검토하고, 딴뜨릭 주석가들이 타 전통의 구절을 인용 혹은 개정하는 문맥을 살펴본다. 이러한 과정에서 우리는 공유된 텍스트들의 성격이 어느 한쪽에 선행하거나 기원한 것으로서 취급하기 어려운 경우를 만나기도 한다. 다시 말해, 사상을 표현하는 도구로서 유사 게송이 다양한 인도 문헌 전반에서 나타나기 때문에 그 출처를 확정할 수 없는 경우가 있다. 하지만 이와 반대로 특정한 텍스트 안에서만 발견되기 때문에 좀 더 구체적이며 밀접한 상호 연관을 추적할 수 있는, 즉, 선후관계의 파악이 가능한 문헌 비교연구의 예도 있다. 이런 경우에는 특징적인 구절들이 지닌 이형의 읽기(variant readings)가 사상적 변용과 융합 과정을 보여주기도 한다는 것을 살펴본다.

This article revisits an approach for conducting a comparative analysis of texts in Indian Tantric traditions, specifically focusing on the connection between non-dual Śaiva and Vajrayāna texts. To explore how texts from these traditions interact and reference each other, I provide examples of passages that share similar phrases but discuss concepts of non-duality and śūnyatā separately.
To offer a comprehensive overview of the arguments concerning the similarities and interrelationships among Tantric traditions, this article summarizes previous noteworthy studies. Building upon these foundations, the primary focus of this article is to exemplify that certain shared passages between Śaiva and Vajrayāna can be effectively analyzed through the application of two distinct criteria.
The first criterion involves categorizing texts based on their authorship. Given that passages from Tantras and scriptures are considered to be revealed rather than authored, they often lack specific attributions. In essence, the intentions of compilers and redactors remain undisclosed, including the sources they drew upon. In contrast, in cases where an author quotes or reworks passages from other traditions, their intentions become discernible through textual reformatting.
The second criterion pertains to parallel or similar texts, distinguishing between those with traceable and untraceable origins. Specifically, this article examines one category that potentially indicates a pre-existing relationship among shared texts. The other category encompasses passages reflecting widespread notions within Indian religious thought, which often resist attempts to trace their original sources or references.
In delving into these distinct categories of shared passages on non-dual and emptiness within the Śaiva and Vajrayāna traditions, this article contributes to the ongoing discourse on the intricate connections and variances among Tantric practices. By examining the multifaceted dimensions of authorship, intention, and source origins, this study illuminates the intricate tapestry of interwoven ideas within these traditions. Ultimately, this research offers fresh insights into the dynamic interplay between textual elements, shedding light on the evolving landscape of Tantric thought and its profound influence on Indian religious philosophy.
