엔도 슈사쿠의『스캔들(スキャンダル)』론 -작품에 그려진 ‘악’의 구원의 문제를 중심으로- (Theories on Endo Shusaku’s "Scandal" -On the Salvation of ‘Evil’ as Depicted in the Novel-)

초록

本稿は遠藤周作の1986年作『スキャンダル』を対象作品とし、作品に現れた悪の救いの問題を中心に考察したものである。本作品において悪の様相は女中生であるミツの肉体の若さを欲しがってミツの体から生気を吸おうとしているのを主人公である勝呂が自己像幻視を通して目撃することによって極端に表れている。このような自己像幻視のところから悪の様相がみられており、そこから救いの光が当っているということだが勝呂がミツを犯したのは再生の欲求のためであったことに注意しなければならない。再生の欲求は遠藤が罪の成立条件として記している充実した人生を欲求する声とつながっているところがあり、ここでの悪の様相とは遠藤が評論などで記した罪の様相と重なっていることがわかる。ただ衰えた肉体の再生を欲求し、ミツを犯した勝呂の行為を遠藤が悪そのものであると記したマゾヒズムに近いものと考えたとき、本作品の中にマゾヒズムについて生命や再生の欲求を表す行為だという心理学者の話があることから悪の救いというのはマゾヒズムの行為の中で再生の欲求を表していることと理解できる。またこのような悪の救いは遠藤が本作品の中に描き出そうとしたという肉の問題と意識下の清らかではないところからむしろ救いの兆しがみられることと結び付けられるものである。このような悪の救いの問題は本作品の発表から七年後発表された『深い河』でも中心のテーマの一つとなっており、このことからも遠藤が悪というものを救いの次元に至らせようとしたことやそうした過程の中でむき出された矛盾が遠藤の作品を理解する上で大切なことであったのが推察される。したがって矛盾したところが少なかったにもかかわらずこれまでの作品の中で悪の救いを初めに描き出した作品だと作家が自ら認識している作品であることからも遠藤の後期文学を論ずるにおいて本作品『スキャンダル』がもつ意義は大きいと言えよう。

영어초록

This article reflects on Shusaku Endo's 1986 novel “Scandal” and the issues of “evil” and “salvation” as depicted in the said work.
First, the aspects of so-called evil are maximized in the description of Suguro’s autoscopy, as it is described in the novel. Suguro’s out-of-body experience is shown as he looks through a peephole of a hotel room to see his doppelganger molesting the body of a seemingly young girl, Mitsu.
Suguro's imaginative taking of Mitsu’s body was caused by a desire for the regeneration of his aging body. This urge to reclaim one's youth is seen as a desire for a full life, which does not stray from the aspects of so-called sin, as previously described by the author. If the main protagonist's longing for his youthful body and physical lust for Mitsu are seen as masochistic then this act of masochism act can be described as a revelation of the character's inner desire for life and longing for regeneration. Therefore, the unleashing of this longing through masochism can be interpreted as salvation from evil. It can also be seen that such salvation is associated with the problematic needs of the “body,” which was stated by Endo as the purpose of the story. However, since this transformative urge is suppressed within the subconscious, it is only made clear once the act of salvation is realized.
In particular, the depiction of salvation associated with the issue of the body sets this novel apart from Endo’s other works. Salvation from evil is also a central theme in “Deep River”, which was written 7 years after this novel. From this pattern, it can be inferred that the author’s will and the hypocrisy unveiled in the process are important factors in understanding the author's other literary works. In that respect, despite the many contradictory points included within, “Scandal” is significant in discussing Endo's later works as it was eventually a self-proclaimed key milestone for the author. In addition, it has been recognized as a turning point in the author's pioneering career by being his first work to depict the salvation of evil through the looking glass of an affected individual in an aging society.
