후삼국시기 선승들의 활동지역과 정치적 배경 (Regions that witnessed the activities of the Zen Buddhist priests during the Later Three Dynasties period, and the political background of their activities)

초록

후삼국시기 선종산문 연구는 주로 고려 왕실의 후원 의도 또는 특정 지역에서 발전한 개별 산문과 그 후원세력에 대해서 이루어졌다. 이들 연구를 통해 선승들의 사회적 영향력과 개별 산문의 발전에 대해서 상당한 이해가 축적되었다. 그러나 평면적이고 개별적 접근이라는 점에서 후삼국시기 산문분포를 전체적 시각에서 바라볼 필요가 있다. 본고는 후삼국시기 산문분포 지역이 갖는 정치적 성격을 검토하여 산승들의 활동지역의 특징을 도출해 내어 산문 중심의 연구에서 벗어나 지역을 중심에 두어 후삼국시기 선승들의 활동을 조망하고자 하였다.
후삼국시기를 각 세력이 구축되면서 정비되는 정립기와 고려-후백제간 신라주도권 싸움이 본격화되는 각축기로 나누어 살펴보았다. 정립기 선승들의 활동지역 변화에서 주목되는 점은 바로 군주와 결연한 선승들이 낙동강·남한강·섬진강 수계 지역으로 이동하여 머문다는 것이다. 이들 지역은 후삼국 군주들에게 세력의 영향력 유지 및 확대를 기대할 수 있는 전략적 요충지라는 공통점이 있다.
한편 각축기에 선승들의 활동지역은 경북북부지역과 합천지역이다. 이들 지역은 신라주도권 싸움이 본격화 되면서 주요 전장이 되었다. 이 지역은 삼국의 팽팽한 대립으로 특정 세력이 강하게 영향력을 미치지 못하는 친신라 혹은 중립적 지역이었다. 이러한 지역애서 활동하던 선승은 군주와 결연을 피하고 정세를 관망하는 신중한 태도를 보인 것이다. 이들은 고려로 전세가 완전히 넘어간 시기에 태조와 결연하였다.

Previous studies of Zen Buddhist sects from the Later Three Dynasties periodmostly focused their efforts upon determining the intentions of the Goryeoroyal family which supported them, or how other sects in other areas weresupported by various supporting factions. Thanks to these studies, the Zenpriests’ social influence as well as the development process of individualBuddhist sects have been clarified. But a new approach to all sects would bemore preferable in creating a bigger picture. Examined in this article is thepolitical nature of regions which housed certain Zen Buddhist sects, in order todetermine certain characteristics shared by individual areas where Zen Buddhistpriests operated, as such examination would help us have a wider view of theentire Zen Buddhist community, more so than just continuing to studyindividual sects and factions of this period.
There was a period in which all three “Later” dynasties were firmlyestablished, and there was a period in which Goryeo and Hu-Baekje foughtwith each other to gain dominance over Shilla. During the former period, itshould be noted that Zen Buddhist priests who had been connected with thekings were moving to areas such as the Nakdong-gang, Nam’han-gang andSeomjin-gang river basins, which were all strategically important areas thatwould have allowed leaders of all three dynasties to not only maintain but alsoexpand their own ranges of influence. Then in case of the latter period, theZen Buddhist priests are mostly spotted in northern parts of the GyeongsangBuk-do province and also the Habcheon area. It seems like as the competitionover Shilla continued, these areas turned into an active war zone. Fierceface-offs ironically forced this region to remain neutral or pro-Shilla. ZenBuddhist priests in this region refrained from forming an active relationshipwith the kings, and seem to have chosen to instead monitor the situationclosely. Later when Goryeo rose as ultimately victorious, they formed arelationship with founder king Taejo.
