‘세계문학론’의 한국적 전유와 그 난제들 (World Literary Theory from the Korean Interpretation Perspective and Conundrums)

초록

이 논문은 최근 영문학계와 비교문학계에서 활발하게 논의되고 있는 ‘세계문학’ 담론이 한국문학에 던지는 질문과, 그것에 대한 한국문학계의 수용과 대응을 살피는 것을 목표로 삼고 있다. 비록 일본을 경유한 것이었지만, 한국 근대문학은 세계문학의 영향을 받으면서 시작되었다. 때문에 한국문학에 있어서 세계문학의 영향은 새로운 문제라고 말할 수 없다. 하지만 근대국가의 경계선이 흐려지는 역사적 현실을 배경으로 등장한 최근의 세계문학 담론은 우리가 익히 들어온 근대적 의미의 세계문학 담론과는 문제의식 자체가 다르다.
이 글에서는 이러한 역사적 배경의 상이함에 착안하여 먼저 ‘세계문학’ 담론의 기원을 두 가지로 구분하여 설명하고자 했다. 그리고 그 구분을 통해 19세기 괴테와 마르크스가 제기한 ‘세계문학’과 지금 논의의 대상이 되고 있는 ‘세계문학’이 전혀 다른 맥락 위에 놓여 있음을 살폈다. 다음으로 이 글은 ‘세계문학’ 담론이 한국에 수용되는 양상을 비평과 국문학계로 구분하고, 전자를 다시 ‘괴테-맑스적 기획’과 ‘지구적 세계문학’을 대안으로 제시하는 입장으로 구분했다. 전자의 경우 세계문학을 ‘기획’, 즉 운동의 방식으로 전유하는 것이 특징이고, 후자의 경우에는 ‘세계’를 비유럽 중심으로 재편하려는 태도를 보이는 것이 특징이다.
이러한 비평적 대응 양상과 달리 국문학 연구자들은 ‘세계문학’ 담론에 관심을 보이지 않고 있다. 이 글은 그 이유를 국문학이 ‘한국문학’이라는 중립적인 이름 대신 자국학, 즉 국학이라는 이념의 지배가 분명히 느껴지는 ‘국문학’이라는 이름으로 스스로를 규정해왔기 때문에 발생하는 문제로 파악했다. ‘국문학’ 연구자에게 ‘문학’은 단순한 연구대상이 아니라 한 국가, 한 민족의 사상, 감정, 이념 등을 포괄하는 것이다. 따라서 국문학이 ‘국문학’이라는 이름을 포기하고 ‘한국문학’이라는 이름으로 ‘세계문학’에 들어서는 순간 그동안 ‘국문학’이 중요하게 내세웠던 문학적 잣대가 위태로워지는데, 바로 이 논문은 바로 이 지점이 ‘세계문학’과 ‘국문학’의 간극이 첨예하게 드러나는 지점임을 강조하려 했다.

영어초록

This study aims to examine the questions of world literature discussion debated actively in the recent English literary world and comparative literary world to Korean literature and to delve into the acceptance and responses of the Korean literary world. Korean literature began through world literary influences, although the influences were via Japan. In this regard, the influences of world literature on Korean literature cannot be said to be a novel issue. The recent world literary discussion emerging at the historical background in which modern countries’ boundaries become obscure is different from the world literary discussion having a modern meaning that we are familiar with in terms of critical mind.
The origin of world literary discussion was explained in two categories based on such differences in historical background. Through such a categorization, it was investigated that the world literature mentioned by Goethe and Marx in the 19th century and the world literature, a subject for current debate, are in the enormously different context. The aspect that world literary discussion is accepted in Korea was divided into criticism and the Korean national literature world, and the former was classified into Gothe-Mark style planning and a position presenting global world literature as an alternative. The feature of the former case is that world literature is exclusively possessed in the mode of planning, namely a fashion of movements, and the latter case’s feature is showing an attitude to reorganize the world into non-Europe-centered world.
Unlike such a critical response aspect, Korean national literature researchers do not show interest in world literary discussion. This study identified the reason as a problem occurring, because Korean national literature has defined itself as the name of Korean national literature by which the ideological dominance of own country’s literature or national literature is clearly felt, instead of the neutral name of Korean literature. To Korean national literature researchers, literature encompasses the thoughts, emotions, and ideologies of one country and one people, rather than just a research subject.
Therefore, the moment when Korean national literature enters world literature under the name of Korean literature by giving up the name of Korean national literature, the literary standard considered as important thus far becomes risky. This study tried to emphasize that the very point is the one where the gap between world literature and Korean national literature is sharply revealed.
