근대 희곡에 나타난 제국의 조선 의사들 (Chosun Doctors of the Empire Appearing in Modern Play)

초록

서구의학을 익힌 의사는 근대에 출현한 믿음과 신뢰, 그리고 존경의 대상이었다. 이들은 조선인 대중에게 근대의 첨단 문명을 실어 나르고 그것을 몸소 체험케 했던 존재들이었다. 이 근대적 인물은 당대 가치를 극화한 근대 희곡에 빈번하게 등장한다. 본 연구는 근대 희곡에 나타난 의사라는 인물을 통해 식민지 현실에서 낯설고 새로운 시공간으로 항해 달려가는 조선 사회의 시대상을 살펴보고자 하는 문학적 작업이자 노력이다.
조선 사회에서 서구 의학이라는 근대 과학이자 기술을 선보였던 서양의들은 제국의 도움으로 그간 조선인 환자들을 치료했던 한의사들을 변방으로 밀어내고 조선 의학계의 헤게모니를 거머쥘 수 있었다. 본고 2장에서는 근대 희곡의 작품을 통해 이러한 변화를 살펴보았다. 이 본 장에서는 제국의 수혜를 받았기에, 일제의 호출에 발 빠르게 응답해주는 의사들을 분석하였다. 이들은 제국과 조선인 환자들이 나란히 서 있는 자리에서 조선인 환자들의 고통과 아픔을 외면하였다. 3장에서는 조선인 환자들을 진료하고 치료하는 의사와 함께 여러 이유를 대며 환자 진료를 거부하는 의사들을 살펴보았다. 후자의 의사들의 경우, 전부 조선인으로서 2장에서 언급한 환자를 외면한 의사들과 함께 자신들의 안정적 삶을 보장해줄 제국과 돈 외에는 관심이 없는 자들이었다. 4장에서는 돈과 제국을 쫓는 의사들이 역으로 환자로 전락되어 근대의 부작용을 일으키는 존재라는 사실을 확인하였다.
정리하면, 1910~30년대 희곡에 등장하는 의사들은 환자 진료와 치료에 매진하는 모습으로 그려지면서 다른 한편에서는 남의 물건을 탐하는 환자이자 제국의 곁에서 근대의 조선 사회를 병들게 하는 불순한 존재였다. 의사들은 제국의 수혜를 받아 성장했지만, 그 과정에서 그들은 조선인의 삶을 외면하는 제국과 닮아가고 있었다. 돈과 제국을 쫓는 의사들은 조선 사회를 병들게 하는 근대에 출현한 부작용이었다.

영어초록

A doctor with the knowledge of western medicine in the modern times earned trust and respect from the public. The doctors at that time were pioneers who spread the fruits of the western civilization to the people in Chosun and made it possible for the people to experience new technologies. This type of characters who symbolize the modernization comes often into the story in modern play.
This study is literary work and effort to examine the times of Chosun sailing from a colonial reality to a strangely new space and time through a figure of a doctor who appeared in the modern play.
Westerners who have introduced the modern science and technology that was known as Western medicine were able to win the hegemony of the Chosun medical community by shoving away the Korean Medicine Doctors who, with the aid of the empire, have treated the Korean patients to the frontier. In the second chapter of this volume, we investigated these changes through the collection of modern plays. This chapter analyzed the behavior of doctors whose response to the Japanese Empire, after having been benefited from the Empire, was made very quickly. They, in presence of facing the patients from Chosun and the Japanese Empire, looked away the pain and suffering of the patients from Chosun. Chapter 3 paid close attention to the doctors who treated the patients from Chosun and to those who refused to treat by giving a variety of reasons. The doctors who belong to the latter case were all from Chosun and they focused only on the Japanese empire and money that guaranteed their stable lives, just as the doctors who neglected their patients mentioned in chapter 2. However, in chapter 4, it has been found that they became patients and they became factors that have bad effects on modern era.
To sum up, the doctors appearing in the plays of 1910s to 1930s are depicted as people who are entirely focused in treating patients in the one hand, while as detestable beings desiring others' property and deteriorating modern Chosun society along with the empire in the other hand. Though doctors grew by receiving benefits from the empire, along the process, they closed their eyes from the lives of average people of Chosun - they were just becoming like the empire. the doctors who chased money and the empire were negativities that appeared during the modern era, which degenerated Chosun society.
