초록

흔히 ‘완전영화의 신화’는 자주 몽타주 무용론으로 이해되기도 하였는데, 이는 서사구성에 대한 고찰을 통해 재고되어야 한다. 이와 같은 성찰은 몽타주가 가장 중요하게 기여하는 바가 좁은 의미의 이야기, 즉 스토리의 구성이라는 관점에 대해서도 마찬가지다. 몽타주는 의미화되지 않는 이질적인 요소들의 조합을 가능하게 하는 담론의 영역에서 이해되어야 한다. 영화가 이야기를 구성하는 표현 방법으로서 ‘담론’의 요소를 고려하면, 서사는 하나의 진실체계를 무매개적으로 모방하는(미메시스) 독립된 완성체가 아니라, 다양한 방식으로 믿을만한 이야기를 만들어내는 다층구조임이 더욱 분명해진다. 또한 영화적 서사는 이미지의 현실세계에 대한 지시성이라는 특별한 요소 때문에, 역사서술(historiography)과도 유비적이다. 신역사주의와 함께 발달한 서사학적 논의들은 이미 독립된 전체로서의 서사를 뒷받침하는 하부구조나 그것을 넘어서는 문화사회적 담론체계로서 디에게시스를 인정하고 있다. 본 연구는 새로운 서사에 대한 기원으로서 역사기술로 시작하여, 미메시스와 디에게시스, 몽타주와 데쿠파주, 입체성과 평면성 등과 같은 다양한 대립항들을 통해 끊임없이 변화, 교차하는 내러티브 구조의 안과 밖을 드러내어 볼 것이다. 이를 통해, 기존에 문학과의 비교에만 집중되었던 영화 서사에 대한 탐구를 그간 다양한 예술의 영역에서 시도되었던 시공간의 재현 방식들을 호출함으로써, ‘다시 서사’로 의미화할 수 있는 미디어 예술의 구성들을 탐색해볼 것이다. 이는 단순하게는 형식에 관한 실험이거나, 비서사예술이라 생각했던 다양한 시도들이 어떻게 새로운 기술, 새로운 플랫폼, 변화된 관객들과 ‘소통’하는 일종의 서사적 구성일 수 있는지에 대한 논의의 시발점이 될 것이다.

영어초록

“The myth of a total cinema” seems to suggest we no longer need montage. This should be reconsidered through a reexamination of structures of narrative and discourse. The same holds true for the view that the most important contribution of montage is merely the construction of a story. Instead, montage should be understood in the realm of discourse that enables the assemblage of heterogeneous elements that are not necessarily signified. Considering 'discourse' as an expressive method for a film to ensure a meaningful structure, the narrative is not an independent and complete imitation of the world of truth, instead becoming a multi-layered world of diegesis presenting the story in a certain way. On the other hand, the concept of media-storytelling is analogous to the problems of historiography because both depend on the referentiality of signs and images to the real world. The narrative discourse developed with the new historicism already recognizes the organization of subtexts that support diegetic truth beyond tangible information. From this understanding, this study begins by discussing the emergence of diegesis in historiography as the origin of new forms of narrative, and continues by analyzing various forms of opposition in cinematic construction, such as mimesis and diegesis, montage and decoupage, the depth and the plane, movement and stillness, among others. Through this, we will explore the composition of media works that can be interpreted as a (re)turn to narrative. Narrative methods deal with the representation of time and space as attempted in various fields of arts. This will vary the way we explore cinematic narrative, which has mostly focused on the relationships with literature and theater. It is hoped that this study will serve as a starting point for discussions on how various attempts in non-narrative arts still can create meaning without being merely formal experiments, which is also about how media artists 'communicate' with changed audiences through new technologies and new platforms.
