초록

작가의 등단작을 주목하는 것은 등단작에 작가의 문학세계 원형이 들어있기 때문이다. 이번에 새로 발굴된 한글본 『등잔불 드는 여인』은 『역사는 흐른다』보다 6년 먼저 쓰인 일어본 『灯を持っ女』를 바탕으로 한 것이어서 여러 가지 의의가 있다. 비록 미완으로 보이는 작품이지만 5회나 연재된 작품이고 『역사는 흐른다』의 직전 작품으로 문학정신의 형성 및 출발을 살필 수 있는 장점이 있기 때문이다. 앞으로 일어본 『灯を持っ女』이 번역된다면 한글본 『등잔불 드는 여인』의 의미가 확장 보완되어 한무숙 문학세계를 풍성하게 할 가능성도 있다. 병약하던 작가 한무숙이 겪은 시집살이는 전통적 조선 사대부가의 아름다움과 누적된 문제점을 뼛속 깊이 체험하게 하여 이를 소설화한 첫 작품 『등잔불 드는 여인』은 한무숙 문학정신을 이야기할 때 빼놓을 수 없는 문제의식을 담고 있다. 한무숙이 체험한 시집살이는 근대가 시작된 지 수십 년이 지나서도 조선조의 그것으로 그려진 데다 일견 구소설의 구조를 보이나 우리 근대여성 문학사에서 처음 등장한 전통적 여성과 시집살이 문제의 소설화라는 의의가 있다. 그래서인지 한무숙의 소설들은 19세기로부터 역사라고 하는 수직적 시간을 따라 최소 삼대의 이야기를 담는 구성을 보인다.
『灯を持っ女⸱ 등잔불 드는 여인』은 1942년 『신시대』가 모집한 장편소설 모집에서 2등 입선한 작품으로 일어본은 2백 자 원고지 약 840장의 역작이다. 단편 위주로 전개된 우리문학사에서 흔치 않게 장편으로 등단한 작가는 희곡도 썼으나 일어로 된 이들 작품은 일실 되었고 일어본 『 『灯を持っ女』 는 영인 공개되었으나 18년이 지났음에도 번역이 되지 않은 탓인지 연구자의 관심을 끌지 못했다. 따라서 그 위상이 정립되어있지 않은 것 등 한무숙의 초기소설은 몇 가지 문제를 안고 있다. 이번에 발굴된 한글본 『등잔불 드는 여인』은 일어본과 동명의 작품이고 내용과 비슷해서 대략적이나마 일어본과 비교를 해볼 수 있었고, 5회 연재의 길이여서 작품으로서 어느 정도 논의도 가능했다. 이 글은 한글본 『등잔불 드는 여인』에서 추출된 시집살이 모티프, 남편의 축첩 모티프, 아내의 자살 모티프, 사회운동가 모티프, 그리고 아내의 서사 모티프 중 시집살이 모티프를 주목했다. 다섯 개의 모티프 중 네 개의 모티프가 뇌리에 깊이 각인된 작가의 시집살이 체험이 바탕이 된 것이고 작가가 특히 주목한 조선조 사대부가의 냉혹한 시어머니상(像)은 윤리적 규범의 폭력성을 체현한 인물로 한무숙의 문학정신을 형성하는데 빼놓을 수 없는 인물상으로 보였다. 『역사는 흐른다』에 다시 진지하게 그린 사대부가 주인마님 송씨부인의 일생은 작가가 전통적 여성 인물, 특히 사대부가의 시어머니상에 주목하고 있음을 확인시켜준다. 시어머니의 묘사에서 보인 돌이킬 수 없는 윤리적 폭력성과 동시에 전통여성의 아름다운 규범 등 긍정적 묘사는 전통을 살려 현대와 지양해가는 한무숙 문학정신의 특징을 잘 나타내고 있다.
이는 『역사는 흐른다』의 개작을 살피는 과정에서 다시 한번 확인되었는데 송창규목사와 박옥련교장이 일제의 신사참배 강요를 두고 대응하는 태도에서 타협과 포용을 허락하여 주목되었다. 이는 다산의 배교를 크게 문제 삼지 않은 『만남』의 문학정신에도 통한다.

영어초록

The reason why we have paid attention to the works of starting writer’s literary career is it has contained the original form of the writer’s literary world. The Korean text [A woman who is holding a lamplight, 등잔불 드는 여인] which has been found in this moment was written based on the Japanese text 『灯を持っ女』 which was written six years earlier than [The history is going on, 역사는 흐른다], so that we thought it has various meanings. Even if it seemed unfinished work, it was published serially five times, and in the future the Japanese text 『灯を持っ女』 will be translated, so the significance of the Korean text [A woman who is holding a lamplight] will be extended and complemented, if so, it will make Han Moo-sook’s literary world rich.
The married life in the home of the husband’s parents in which Han Moo-sook suffered hardship, which was a weak constitution, was the motive of her first novel [A woman who is holding a lamplight], so that the novel has contained a critical mind when we couldn’t forget talking about her spirit of literature. The married life in the home of the husband’s parents that she experienced was illustrated vividly in her work like the married life of the Joseon Dynasty, even though the novel was actually a modern work. Was that the reason? Han Moo-sook’s works were composed of containing the story of three vertical generations from the 19th century.
[A woman who is holding a lamplight] was placed second in the prize contest for full-length novel that was held by [Sinseadea] in 1942, and the Japanese text was a masterpiece that was total 840pages on squared manuscript paper for 200 characters. In field of Korean literature that showed usually short story, it was rare to start one’s literary career with full-length novel. Even if it was printed 18years ago, this Japanese text has not been translated; therefore, it did not interest the researchers.
As the Korean text was found, we could compare approximately. And it was the work in 5 series, so that it was possible to discuss about it like the work. There were a lot of motives in the Korean text [A woman who is holding a lamplight]; for reason of married life in home of husband’s parents, of keeping a mistress of her husband, of wife’s suicide, of a person engaged in a social movement and of narratives of wives. This article has focused on the married life in home of husband’s parents. During the writer’s married life in home of her husband, the image of her husband’s mother that was stamped on the writer’s memory was the power to grow her spirit of literature of approval and tolerance, not the absolute conservation, recognizing deeply that the image of cold-blooded mother of husband would be violence, if the ethical rules were not changed over time.
We verified it when we reviewed the adaptation of [The history is going on], namely, in the novel there was a conflict between the pastor, Song Chang-kyu and the principal, Park Ok-ryun for worship at the Japanese shrine, and when they discussed about it, they showed compromise and tolerance in their attitude. We think it showed the writer’s spirit of literature that there was no problem in the apostasy of Dasan, Jeong Yahg-yong, and it is a feature of Han Moo-sook’s spirit of literature that the ethical violence was a key for her work, which the mother of her husband did her.
