두 도시 이야기: 노숙인을 통해 바라본 도시공간 (The Story of Dual City: Urban Space from the Homeless Point of View)

초록

The aim of this study is to explore how urban spaces are perceived and utilized differently to the housed citizens and the homeless people, and how the homeless are excluded from urban spaces. In order to answer these questions, this study mainly examines the usage of two urban spaces, where homeless people spend most of their time: public facilities such as station buildings, streets and parks, and homeless shelters. Alongside of this examination, this study detects two strategies for regulating the homeless: dispersing them from ‘public facilities for the housed’ and concentrating them to ‘shelters for the homeless’.
Tracing everyday life of the homeless in two spaces, this study explains that public facilities isolate the homeless from their usage by exclusively focusing on commercial interests and the desire of consumer citizens. With regard to shelters, this study intends to examine the reasons why the homeless are reluctant to go to shelters and want to stay on the streets instead; the deteriorated shelter condition and difficulties of a group life and so forth. In conclusion, this study insists the need of inclusive housing policy and various strategies for and with the homeless beyond only two rigid ones.
